I stop in here a few times a year and am never in a hurry to return once I leave. Pros for Abby’s are: — not smokey at all on my last visit. I think you have to hooka outside now, and no one smoked inside during my last visit. — they have a pool table. — it’s a good space if you’re with a large group. — awesome dogs playing pool and smoking hooka mural in the main room. #classy Cons: — not much love from bartenders or patrons unless you are a regular. -$ 16 for a double whiskey neat? Prices on drafts and well drinks are okay, but you have to ask how much something is before you order or you could end up with an unexpected surprise when you cash out. — bartender over charged someone in my group by $ 2 and when it was brought to her attention instead of just correcting and reprinting the bill she implied my friend was being cheap. Lame I like dive bars generally speaking, Abby’s leaves something to be desired for me.

Grungy hole in the wall. The bartenders are mean and old. I asked for a Washington apple and was handed vodka and apple juice. The hookah is very harsh on the lungs. The only cool thing about the place is the crowd. Met a ton of cool people who I have remained friends with here. Other than that, nothing special.

Love this place. It’s a dive bar where everyone knows your name. The drinks are cheap, the bartenders have character and you will have a fun time. They have karaōke on Thursday, pool and sports and probably the most interesting crowd you will ever meet.

The nachos came with cheese whiz on them, so we didn’t even want to risk ordering anything else. Kind of a creepy vibe in the bar as well. The staff was really nice though!

So I was told the ribs we’re pretty good here, so I stopped by last week. I got a full rack of ribs and to my surprise the portions were large. Delicious! best ribs I have had in Jersey city. Also they had my favorite summer brew on Tap. Awesomeness!!! If you like hookah the have that took. A little bit of everthing. positive experience.

I’ve lived in three apartments since moving to Jersey City and all of them have been within about 3 – 4 blocks from Abbey’s, the local dive-y(formerly hookah) bar. Do not expect much atmosphere. It’s a dark, fairly grimy looking hole with a few TVs, a killer jukebox, and a small pool table in back. Up until very recently, it was also arguably the only hookah bar downtown… though I hear they’ve put an end to that. Drinks are cheap, with a draft of domestic(and their not-bad house brew) running about $ 5. The bartenders are pleasant and you’re sure to catch some interesting conversations from the regulars. Getting through an hour indoors was a challenge, though: hookah and cigarette smoke filled the bar and made breathing a task. The sidewalk seating was an ideal place to grab a drink, have a smoke, and pass the time. Most of my experience with Abbeys has been their takeout. They have your standard bar food(plenty of fried goods, burgers, bar pies) along with a grill. My go-to for a cheap dinner is usually their BBQ half-chicken with fries and a salad. The salad is typically limp and lettuce heavy(although the Abbey’s salad, adding roasted red peppers, grape leaves, and feta is a vast improvement), though the fries are nice and crisp. The chicken is hit-or-miss: I’ve had succulent, well seasoned chicken with just enough char and I’ve had a brick of salted carbon on the bone. It’s not the best bar or the best grill in the neighbourhood, but it’s a standard for me.

Just moved to Jersey City and was searching for a chill hookah spot in the neighbor hood which is clearly not that easy around here but we were happy we founds one. Before we left home(it’s really brick out) we read the last reviews that they have hookah just to make sure. We arrived, the bar was empty on a Tuesday night around 11ish what I expected already. It didn’t smelled like hookah so before we got seated I went to the bar and asked — no more — I tried to. Because the waitress/bartender was obvious too busy chatting. She came up pretty rude right away, with a no. And followed with«and there is no hookah bar close by». We left the bar quick, not because they didn’t had hookah, just because she came up rude already — which I think you can’t do when your bar is empty…

I’ve been to Abbey’s Pub and Grill about four times now and what I appreciate about it is their consistency. Make no mistake, Abbey’s is a dive bar. But it’s a dive bar with character and a feeling of homeyness. There’s plenty to do at Abbey’s despite the fact its just slightly bigger than the size of my living room. You have a bar with four good size flat screens over head usually showing the most popular sporting events, news broadcasts and TV shows. Last night I watched«Anthony Bourdain», «College Football», «Bones» and«Modern Family» all at once. Next to the bar is a cool Digital Jukebox with almost every popular song you can name. They have a small finger-food menu: buffalo wings, hummus, chips and dip, etc and I believe even barbeque ribs(which I never tried but heard they are on point). I have had both the wings and the hummus and for a dive bar you will be surprised that the food is quite good. Abbey’s also offers a small but well rounded selection of flavored Hookah. This is perhaps my favorite thing about Abbeys. I’ve tried the Mixed Fruit, Mango, Cherry, Coconut and Lime flavors. The best one is the Mixed fruit. The mango was kind of mild. Between drinking and hookah you can get pretty nice at Abbeys for cheap. The hookahs are all $ 15 and most beers on tap are $ 5. My wife and I spent $ 40 and got a Mango Hookah and four beers. We sat in the booth by the window and mellowed out for a few hours. In the rear is a pool table which costs a reasonable $ 1 per game, but its not a regulation sized table and is a bit on the small size. It’s a cool addition to the bar though and adds something else to take part in. If you are looking for a trendy, top shelf bar where all the Cool Kids hang out, keep it moving. The clientele skewers toward neighborhood regular 30-somethings who want to kick back, talk shit and enjoy a good beer and some hookah. If that’s your thing, you’ve come to the right place.

Great casual place to have some yummy BBQ food. The crowd is laid back and the location in JC is that that bad. Good assortment of beers but the only reason i gave it 4 stars is that I personally think this is a place to come to only when its not cold out and you can sit outside. What better way to eat some BBQ chicken, and ribs but outside on a picnic table!

Did a take out yesterday via The order was taken care of fast. Good was good, could be better. The chicken and the ribs felt like it needed more flavoring. The side orders are great. The packaging of the take out was perfect. Highly recommended, planning on dinning in soon.

Abbey’s! During the school year this is my go to spot Thursdays. After class I usually go with my homeboy Cedric, and watch him and the guys play pool(shoot pool? Correct me thanks.) and just drink and bullshit. It has a homey feeling, everyone knows each other, and I’ve never seen any fights or anything of that sort. The bartenders are nice, older women and the food is good. Thursday is karaōke night! Which I love, a lot. Chill spot, highly recommend!

As the other posts have indicated, definitely a dive bar. When I went I did not realize that it was a hookah bar and was very surprised by all the smoke. The food was pretty bad, as was the beer. For as cute as it looks from the outside I definitely won’t be going back.

This place is a solid dive bar. They have pitchers of macro-beer. They have a jukebox. They have a pool table. They have outdoor seating. And most importantly, they have hookahs, with many different tobacco options. Abbey’s is a cool place to chill out with friends in Downtown JC. They usually have space to grab a table as well. I tried the food here nearly 10 years ago, but I don’t remember how I felt about it, so…

This is a no nonsense, simple dive bar! Cheap drinks, pool table in the back, Juke box, and hookah! Laid back crowd, not the usual yuppie /hipster type bar like the others downtown jc. The bartenders are friendly the food is standard bar fare. Great low key place to grab a drink and smoke after a long day!

I love dirty dive bars. It’s tough to find em in yuppie downtown JC… they all be gastrofuckinpubs now-a-days. This is one of the remaining bars of that ilk. Cheap happy hour drinks, crotchety blue-collar dudes and fugly oldschoolers sitting solo, wondering, «what the hell happened to my life?» Then after happy hour, yuppies flowing through, with their Brooks Brothers and Anthropolofuckingie outfits on… playin rap on the juke. Pardon me, I gotta go take a shower.

Abbey’s is a super dive bar that allows smoking inside. They even sell cigarettes at the bar! But more importantly for me, they serve hookah. Their hookahs aren’t great. Chinese hookahs, small clay bowls, and instant light coals. Needed a lot of work on my part to get it going. But I guess this place is a bar first, hookah bar second. Drinks were decently priced, and the crowd was fun. Every dive bar should have a pool table. I even got to play with other patrons last night after signing up on the chalkboard. The girls working the bar were nice, served my hookah and drinks quickly. Didn’t try any food, but I’d come back to play pool and have a few drinks, probably not for hookah. It’d be great if I could smoke a cigar in here, but that might be asking too much.

Very dive– bar atmosphere. Theyve got some modern juke box, the waitress/bartender wore something that reminded me of goth. but less suicidal. There is a pool table in the back, and yes they do serve hookah. Hookah was pretty average, no one came around to change coal or antyhing, seemed understaffed. We ordered the sweet plantains which were pretty good and sambuca. The sambuca was poured into the glasss properly by the owner, and he made it the right way by adding a few coffee beans in it– that cost 9 bucks!.. They had LIteas and margaritas special that day for 5 $… which is not bad. Overall, i would get the drink special, sit with a hookah(15 $) and sit out doors and relax. Dont expect prompt service but everyone is super nice !
