Swirlz Yogurt And Coffee

2÷17÷14 Since my last update Swirlz owner Chris H. has gone on to post two separate messages on Facebook calling me out by name and slamming my review (Please see the attached screen shots which show that two separate posts were made on two separate dates– one on 2÷4÷14 and one on 2÷5÷14. The actual text used by Mr. Hicks in the screen shots varies as does the dates posted.). In three years on Unilocal I’ve never before witnessed any business owner having as negative of an attitude toward customer feedback as I have experienced from Chris H. of Swirlz.
2÷4÷13: On 1÷20÷14 I wrote this one star review of Swirlz Frozen Yogurt. In the two weeks since I originally posted this review, the owner of Swirlz Frozen Yogurt, Chris, has sent me three private messages, written two reviews of his own business, and posted a direct response to my review. I have literally had to block this owner from messaging me in order to stop this barrage of messages.
In each of these messages he has accused me of writing a false review, despite the fact that I posted pictures of the inside of his business and checked in while I was at his business. I’ve also written over 250 real reviews of business as a Unilocal member during the past 3 years. I pride myself on only writing real reviews based on real experiences of businesses. His accusations that my review was false or that I didn’t actually try his product is completely unfounded.
This owner’s decision to respond to my review in such a negative and accusatory manner has ensured that I will never return to his business. Other Unilocalers can decide for themselves whether a cup of yogurt, coffee, or a baked good is worth dealing with the backlash that this owner will give if you complain about his service or products. For me it isn’t.
The following is the text of my review including some clarifying edits that I made after I was contacted the second time by the owner.
PLEASE NOTE: This review has been edited at the request of the business owner, Chris, who did not think that my original review was 100% accurate and has contacted me twice advising me that I made“mistakes” in it.
After a renovation and relaunch Swirlz has gone from mediocre to miserable.
— Swirlz started advertising that they are now a yogurt and COFFEE shop. However instead of hiring a barista, investing in a real espresso machine, and brewing some quality beans they decided to cut corners and buy an automated push button expresso machine (see picture). These types of machines are most frequently found in corporate waiting rooms, gas stations, and other places where businesses are trying to make low quality coffee look like fancy coffee. Having one of those machines does not make a business a coffee shop unless every gas station in the city is a coffee shop.
EDIT: Apparently this machine is a «super-​automatic machine» that is controlled by a computer. This owner would benefit from visiting Coffee Crossing, Heine Brothers, Highlands Coffee, and Quills and learning what the people of Kentuckiana expect to find when they see a place advertised as a coffee shop. In the mean time other Unilocalers can check out the photo of Swirlz’ espresso machine that I included with my review and form their own opinion on the matter.
— This place has all of 8 very basic yogurt flavors. Every time I have ever been in (pre and post renovation) those flavors have been exactly the same. Yogurt is supposed to be their core competency and they are failing at it. They have also become stingy with their toppings. It is now necessary to ask the teenager behind the counter to open up the topping container and hold it up while you scoop out the bits of cookie dough or brownie bits. This seems totally unnecessary for a product that is priced by the ounce.
EDIT: The business owner has advised me that they have 5 machines with each producing two flavors and one «twist». The night that I was in the shop one of them was broken (the one that has orange sherbet in it). I was advised by the teenager that this machine is often broken. Hence my calculation of 4 machines or 8 unique flavors.
— Above mentioned teenage staff member was also totally disengaged. Instead of greeting customers or providing assistance she had her face buried in her cell phone behind the counter.
EDIT: For honesty’s sake I must add here that the teenager also had her boyfriend in the shop and in between checking her cell phone she was chatting him up.
Jeffersonville needs locally owned businesses but I just can’t endorse one that is cutting so many corners and putting out such a bad product

I have been to Swirlz twice. I was not particularly impressed either time. It was not bad just not great either. I feel like they had the same flavors both times I visited and since most other places seem to rotate it doesn’t put swirlz at the top of my list for froyo. I tried the cookies and cream this time and I didn’t think it tasted anything like cookies and cream. More like chocolate diluted with vanilla. The cheesecake was pretty good but the toppings were underwhelming. Like the other reviewer stated I found the chocolate chips to be stale tasting. I was also disappointed that they didn’t have hot fudge. I will say that the store was clean and the staff was friendly but I wish you didn’t have to ask for samples since most other places just let you help yourself. Overall I think Swirlz may still be a work in progress. They will need to make a few changes to be competitive with the many many other froyo places that are popping up all around.

I’ve been here a few times, twice for their admittedly good orange sorbet (one time I walked back out because they didn’t have it and their other flavors were unappetizing). But I was put off by these things:
1. The price is higher than other (better) frozen yogurt shops.
2. The times I’ve been there, the store has been empty or with only one or two other customers the entire time. This tells me they’re not very popular, despite being in what looks like a pretty busy location.
3. They don’t have their orange sorbet all the time, and they also have a very small selection of toppings. And the other yogurt flavors I’ve tried there have not been good.
4. They try to do too much by offering cakes, cookies and other desserts. My sweet tooth is gonna get filled up on yogurt, thanks. I don’t need full-​sized baked goods too.
5. The chocolate chips I had as a topping were stale. Who knows how long they had been sitting out.
Anyway, save your money and go to one of the three better froyo shops on Veterans or go to Homemade if you want baked goods.
