I can honestly say that until quite recently, I have neither visited nor had a reason to see a dermatologist since I was a teenager back in the 80’s. And now that everyone has an idea of just how old I am, I can continue with my review. For several years of my adult life, I had a small mole on my left temple that never gave me any issues. However, within the past 12 months, that mole changed in color & size and became sensitive to the touch. Having such great success so far with every doctor I’ve chosen from the Ochsner network, I logged into their website and pulled up their list of dermatologists. I am a big fan of being a patient of the Department Chair and was immediately drawn to Dr. Julie A. Mermilliod. She is a native New Orleanian who«received her Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from LSU Medical Center, then went on to graduate Alpha Omega Alpha from LSU Medical School. She completed her dermatology residency at LSU Health Sciences Center and is board certified in Dermatology. She has been on staff at Ochsner since the Summer of 2000 and was named Chair of the Dermatology Department in the Spring of 2006». Furthermore, she is friends with a Florida dermatologist friend of mine who went to school with her at LSU and stated she is awesome. I show up for my appointment and was taken to the back right on time. Dr. Mermilliod’s Nurse Practitioner(Lauren) did my initial examination and checked me out for any additional moles other than the one that was causing me concern. She immediately put my mind at ease and told me that I was in good hands. Dr. Mermilliod entered shortly thereafter and did a quick re-examination for additional moles and I was definitely feeling calm and confident that I had chosen wisely. Upon examining my mole, she was fairly certain that it was a pre-cancerous lesion and that a cryo treatment would freeze it and«kill it». The cryo treatment was very fast and in a few short days, the mole formed a scab, fell off and healed up never to be seen again. She recommended an annual visit and strongly suggested the daily application of sunscreen to my face, arms and neck. There is a particular brand that Ochsner carries called Elta MDUV and it’s truly non greasy, so there’s your public service announcement for the day. I left her office feeling relieved and confident that with my pending annual appointments, I would be well protected. So once again, don’t mess around with your health. If you are in the need for a great dermatologist, stop your looking because Dr. Mermilliod is a great choice. Stay healthy!
