Great store!

Oh God this place. Look I am glad there is a local place that has some of the more premium pet foods, but at what cost. The over all feel of this place is terrible. I mean the vibe here made me feel like I was doing something illegal just setting foot inside. Everything from the smell of poison to the sad dogs in cages made my skin crawl.
The prices were way too high and you can get some of these «high brow» dog treats at Marshall’s!

I was depressed just walking in here. I also think my clothes smelled like weed killer all day, what is that smell!

Growing up i remember walking to the back of the tack shop and getting some of the best snowballs. while they no longer appear to sell these, they do seem to have a little bit of just about everything else. Nice variety of plants, inclyuding veggie and herb starters for your garden, plus you can adopt an animal while you are there. win win

I love Jefferson Feed because the people who work here are very nice and helpful every time I’ve been in. I’ve purchased a wide variety of items over the years such as bird food, planting supplies, dog food, dog bowls, and dog toys. I know there’s more… Anyway it’s always a fine experience here and I always find what I’ve come to buy because they carry a wide variety of items.

nice store — well located on Carrollton — smaller convenient size — helpful personnel — competitive pricing, Way smaller than the Jeff Hwy shop.

I used to go to Jeff Feed a lot for garden items and litter, but now that I see they’ve begun carrying those horrible cat traps (for that misguided «trap & release» program) I can no longer support this business. I have two cats which are happily living out the full extent of their lives as indoor/​outdoor cats, and these cat traps (sold at Jeff Feed) both enable and encourage cat-​haters to go around trapping neighborhood cats — and not only the feral ones, but any cat who has the misfortune of walking onto their property. Which is inevitable considering the fact that people setup these traps with some kind of «bait» inside (like tuna) …the scent of which will lure any cat within a miles radius onto the «trapper’s» property for that reason alone. Once a cat is caught in one of these devices it will be left out there (in the sweltering heat or rain) until the property owner notices that it’s there; which can sometimes take a full 24 hours or even an entire weekend! After which they will send the trapped cat to the pound.
How can a business pretend to care about the well being of animals while simultaneously selling contraptions like this which enable animal abuse?

Still two stars. Not because of selection or poor customer service. This time, I was out at the Jefferson Highway store. There was a dog for adoption in a crate on the floor with four, FOUR piles of poop in it, next to his bed. Anyone that knows anything about dogs knows that they don’t poop where they sleep, so this dog had to have been there for a LONG time for it to feel like it absolutely had to go there. I felt so bad for it. When I left the store, it looked like they had hosed it down. So sad.

We have used Jefferson Feed for grooming services for our two American Eskimos for years, the groomer has been available at both locations and always took great care in trimming down our very furry dogs. I suggest using their services on weekdays when they are not to busy, you pet will get much better attention here than those big pet store chains.

This place is pretty much the Honda of garden and pet stores — the prices aren’t insane (umm…Perinos comes to mind) and the know what they are talking about and always live up to and surpass expectations.
The staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful about gardening needs in the New Orleans environment and also knoledgeable about pet products. When I mentioned my dog was having diarrhea the sales person suggested purchasing a food with less protein — and guess what? it worked! When I mentioned a certain flower wasnt flowering, the salesperson told me what to do to fix the situation.
I highly suggest heading to Jefferson Feed for all of your gardening and pet needs. They may cost a little more than Home Depot or Petco but you get your $$ worth. The last time I was at Home Depot’s garden center, I asked an associate for help who told me «I honestly have no idea, there are no gardening associates working today.» I then walked out and headed straight to Jefferson Feed and haven’t looked back.

A flea infestation is common anywhere when you have pets. In New Orleans, it’s almost a right of passage to have to deal with some sort of bug infestation. Fleas, termites, roaches… they thrive in our tropical city jungle. Instead of calling a terminator, I decided I wanted to become one.
I tried everything. I spent over $ 100 at Walmart and Petco on sprays, bombs, drops, and shampoos. You name it, I bought it, and it didn’t work. See, New Orleans fleas are a special mutant breed. They live in the cracks of our wooden floors, in piles of leaves in your garden, in the yard of the abandoned house next door, and on the bodies of all of the feral cats and chickens running around any typical New Orleans neighborhood. My dog was suffering. My roommate was suffering and threatening to move out! I was stressed and broke.
My friends out in Midcity with 2 dogs and a cat who went through the same problem. They told me to head out to Jefferson Feed out on Jefferson Highway, so I did. I was recommend Malathion and Diatomaceous Earth. I was explained what the chemical, Malathion, was and how I should use it. The same went for the DE. They also recommended the Comfortis pill for my dog, which I could get at my vet.
It wasn’t instant, it took a few days… but, my home became flea free, and is still 100% flea free. I spent less than $ 40 at Jefferson Feed and I have so much product, that I let my suffering friends use the Malathion + DE combo for free.
Jefferson Feed also has a great pet department and is pet friendly. My dogs Christmas presents (new pet bed, bones, food, etc) is all coming from Jefferson Feed.

The selection here is outstanding, the food up to date, and the other available items for your pet is also extensive. A necessity for some pet owners, and refreshing that they do this in so many areas. The service is decent. If you get there in the afternoon, park on Central; The gates elsewhere will be locked really early. Because of the address, your GPS will bring you to the entrance on Jefferson. The configuration of the site is a bit… New Orleans? South Louisiana? The price is pretty in line for what you are getting.

Jefferson Feed can’t be beat in terms of supporting a local business that inventories everything from standard greenery to chicken to chew toys (pig’s ear, anyone?).
Great location, great space, a *little disorganized at times. I spent a good 4 – 5 minutes in line the other day while the party 2 ahead of me had the cashier hit a wall on finding a price for a pet carrier. FINALLY another cashier opened, but come on — — -

Jefferson Feed is by far the best pet supply (and garden) store in New Orleans and possibly the entire world. If you have experienced the Petco on Tchoupitoulas street, you will understand why Jefferson Feed really is the best local alternative to those terrible, mean, awful, sad big-​box pet stores.
Their aquariums are well-​maintained (which is always a good barometer as to the overall quality of a pet store), the staff is helpful and friendly, and the cats up for adoption are always well-​cared-​for and so adorable I just want to take them all home every time I see them. They have a real commitment to animal welfare that is apparent, and I enjoy every visit.
My dog also has a grain allergy, and they have a very large, reasonably-​priced selection of limited ingredient diets for him. I have never had to search for a member of staff for help, either. They always find me!
I also just love the guy that works in the aquarium section. He is so adorable, and really seems to care about the fish, which, as a super-​nerdy aquarium-​keeper, I truly appreciate.
And I love looking at the birds, too. The birds are really cool. And the bunnies. And the snakes. And the lizards.
This really is the best store ever, and I love the way it smells. It reminds me of all the feed supply stores I used to go to as a kid in Kentucky…

I always look forward to visiting this place. The staff is friendly and always willing to help me with my pet questions, even patiently listening to me when I’m asking them questions probably only my veterinarian would know. They have an enormous selection of pet food, and it’s the only place that carries the premium, grain-​free cat food I feed my allergic cats with.
They always have animals out for adoption, and I sometimes just drop by to play with the foster kitties who need homes. They all have their little life stories posted on their cage, so it’s hard to tear yourself away from them without bonding with them and not taking one home. I always leave a dollar in the donation jar to help out though. They have many adoption events that help animals find good homes, which I think is just great! They have a big gardening selection, and as soon as I can learn to grow something without helplessly watching it die a slow death, I will be purchasing a few flower plants.
Friendly staff, HUGE food and gardening selections, sweet animals longing for your attention… overall, an awesome place to visit!

Being new to the city with high maintenance dogs, it was only a few weeks before I was scouring the boutique dog food scene for health conscious pet food. A doggie food allergy is no fun, but Jefferson Feed had exactly what I needed and more. They had the exact (not easy to find) dog food that I had been feeding the two guys and a lot of other great brands.
One cool thing to note… A young employee saw me digging through the dog foods and came over to chit-​chat with me. After talking about my dog’s issue, he pointed me to another great food that was more locally produced, cost a little less, and actually had higher reviews than what I had been feeding them. GREAT and KNOWLEDGABLE employee!!! The pups loved the food and so did my bank account!!!
PS-​They have a ton of pet products from dogs, reptiles, fish, etc… And they even have an outdoor gardening section of the store. It’s a neat little combo… Have fun and wander around!!!

Live in New Orleans and have a dog with a finicky grain allergy? Jefferson Feed is your place. Since we don’t have the time or energy to make our boys homemade food and research what vitamins and minerals are essential for animals, we still rely on dog food. Although, we do see the benefits of a quality brand with very few ingredients that steers clear of by-​products and fillers. If that sounds strangely similar to your thinking then man up and take the drive out to Jefferson to stop by this pet and garden store. They have everything from food to collars and leashes and everything else you need for house hold pets. Half of the store is designated to gardening and yard work so you can knock out two birds with one stone, ehhhh, hopefully not their birds but… you get what I’m saying. If you’re looking for brands carried by Pets Smart, Pet-​Co or Care-​A-​Lot you won’t find them here!

I will drive all the way out to Jeff Feed from downtown NOLA just to get my sweet puppy the best pet food. I went on a bad day when they missed a shipment of Orijen. I was hoping to get some Orijen puppy food or Buffalo Blue Wilderness for puppies but they didn’t have either. Luckily they had Canidae for all life stages and my pup is doing alright on that. Jeff Feed has all the top brands for dog food. They also make it easy for you to pick the quality of food you want for your dog. Shop in the aisle 2^nd from the right for the best quality dog food. The aisle to the left of that has all the bad stuff like Purina and the aisle to the left of that has all the stuff that looks good but isn’t (like Royal Canin).
I think that they have a much better selection than any other pet store in the area for food, toys, leashes, shampoo, cleaning supplies, treats, etc. They sell a bag of 45 Greenies for $ 17.99 which is at least $ 3.00 less than Petco, so you’ve already made up your gas money for the hike out to Central.
If you have a chicken, you can get chicken supplies. If you want a weird lizard, you can buy one here. You can also adopt cats or dogs (when they have dogs). And you can buy some nice plants to make your mess of a house and yard a little prettier now that your little monster has destroyed it.

My chickens love this place… they sell chicken food, and thats what my chickens love the best. Hen scratch, too. All your chickening needs. It is a giant place, that proabably has everything, but I stick with the chicken stuff as thats the only thing the chickens really desire.
Spayed/​neuterd/​microchipped kittens also for $ 50-​$ 75 for an impulse buyer also. Each cat has their personal story listed and its a great place too try to find that special someone since you can stock up on kitty toys while there.
An enthusiastic 8 thumbless wings up from the folks in the coop in the yard, and they know about these things.

This place is AWESOME. Unilocal seemed to like it, so I stopped in during my bi-​weekly Metairie trip. I was so impressed by their selection of natural pet foods (no grain, raw, etc…) and natural cat litters. I didn’t buy much because I JUST purchased food last week, but I will definitely make this the place that I go to from now on. I found a cat product that I have never seen in a store, which made me happy because I didn’t have to spend the $ 8 on shipping for a $ 4 item!!!
I would rather support a local business that works with local shelters than a big box place that sucks (See my review on Petco if you are curious)
My husband spent a long time in the fish section, and remarked that they took good care of the fish and had a wide array of supplies. He was looking for a specific breed, so he left empty handed, but will come back for food and supplies.
PLUSES: nice garden center (affordable plants and statues. very helpful staff), adoptable animals (from the parish shelter), ice cream and drinks at the front counter!

Things I have bought a Jefferson Feed:
a curry brush for a horse (as a gift)
chickens, ducks
feed for my hamsters, gerbils, dog, chickens, ducks, and rabbits
soil
plants
sod.
And probably some other stuff that I forgot since I grew up around the corner from the store. Really, they have all sorts of stuff that you never knew you needed.
The best thing is that the store is located in the old Jefferson Movie Theater where my Dad used to see the Saturday morning serials in the 1940s-​50s.
