Schnitzelbank Restaurant

Yummy German food. I had the tenderloin and it was yummy. I also like the German theme décor.

My first stop every time I travel to this part of the country. Great traditional German menu, décor, imported beer menu.

The Schnitzelbank has been reported as the best restaurant in Jasper to my by many of the locals. While its obvious to see the deep rooted history that the restaurant carries, the food is someone lacking in the same traditional favors that one would expect. With the addition of catering to their facility, it seems that well crafted German food has taken a back seat to mass produced German food. I’d compared much of what our group ate to inexpensive wedding food… you’ll eat it because you’re hungry, it’s not awful, but the flavors and textures give off the sense that it’s made in huge batches. The salad bar was very disappointed, nothing special by any means as it’s advertised on the menu. The giant pretzels were dry and over-​done and the brats weren’t much large than a small breakfast sausage. Overall, everything was just kind of blah.
The saving grace here is the atmosphere and the people who work there, they do a great job of making you feel welcome and like family.

My Oma makes the best potato salad and this place would be a solid runner up.
The sauerkraut balls are a must with hot mustard.

This place sucks. They open at 8am but don’t have a breakfast menu! Who the hell wants a salad bar and sour kraut for breakfast! So my co-​worker ordered anyway, he never listens because he’s a mellinial, and guess what sucked? His entire order sucked that’s what. Now we have to go find a normal restaurant just so I can eat an effing egg!

Tried to go in for lunch Saturday, wanting to take my wife and daughter while we were in town visiting family. The hostess was very rude, like we were a huge inconvenience. She pointed to a table in back and said «you can sit there» and when I asked about a high chair she said «don’t have one for you now» and turned away to talk to another staff member. When I interrupted to ask how long it would be for a high chair she turned to me, annoyed, and said «we have a shower going on with a lot kids and they are using everything so it will be awhile» then turned away again. No concern if we stayed or went, no sorry for inconvenience, she couldn’t even be bothered to look at us. We walked out. It is sad that they seem to think they are so big they no longer have to treat their customers with respect. I won’t be returning to inconvenience them again with our presence or outrageous request for a high chair.

Excellent food, excellent service! Had the Braztel and the blonde beer. Delicious and price was very very reasonable. Large portions, great value.

I told my girlfriend for the longest time i wanted to try this place out and never made the drive but i am glad we did for one the buffet had all you need on it but she had to get the schnitzel with sauerkraut i got the sourbrauten with potato salad and one of my favorite things on the buffet other then the amazing buffalo chicken soup was the big block of blue cheese all i need now is a spoon so when you come here dont pass in the buffet and get the house made root beer so while i was setting here gorging myself i was looking it google maps and eating apple strudel i noticed we was only 30 minutes from Owensboro oh yeah its on BBQ

Great food and portions are huge! I had the salad bar & pretzel each $ 10 and pretzel is definitely shareable! Bartender was super nice and everyone in the restaurant was friendly and customers were happy

I have wanted to try the Schnitzelbank for as long as I can remember. Well I finally got the opportunity to! My husband works out of town quite a lot and they do a lot of work in Jasper Indiana in particular. Normally this is not an overnight trip for him however this time he ended up needing to stay for several days in a row. His hotel just happened to be just across from the Schnitzelbank so when he called and wanted to know if I would be willing to drive the 90 minutes up to visit him and finally try out the Schnitzelbank I couldn’t say no! I am particularly fond of German food so I was very excited to try out some of their specialties. I started with a nice blonde beer and their salad bar. The beer was very good and I would definitely have the same one again if I am able to go back. The salad bar was very interesting. In a great way. I was very impressed with the multitude of homemade salads that were available and all of the ones I tried were delicious though since they weren’t labeled I can’t necessarily tell you what they all were. I also loved the huge hunk of blue cheese that was available to slice from since that’s a favorite of mine. The salad toppings themselves while good were maybe a little bit lacking (mostly just cheese, bacon, egg and croutons) but the other choices made up for that in my opinion. For my meal I had the wurst platter and they were all excellent. I also enjoyed the fried potatoes and sauerkraut that came with them. I also got to try my husbands spätzle and it was awesome. My only real regret is that I had no room for dessert! I did think the prices were a tad steep but overall it was a very good meal and I would eat at the Schnitzelbank again!

The management and the staff here are so kind and welcoming!
Their extensive beer and wine list has something for everyone, the food is wonderful, and the little shop has all sorts of German goodies that are hard to find elsewhere.
The pleasant environment and relaxed atmosphere make for a very enjoyable meal.

The other day when I went back to my hometown, I was coming through with my mother and she was like where should we go to eat in Jasper. Then we said, «HEY LET’S GO TO THE SCHNITZELBANK!»
First of all, to get a negative aspect out of the way, the parking lot is horrendous. It’s just difficult to park in, because there is no real organization.
When you first show up to the Schnitzelbank, you will see how festive they are with the blue string lights all around the building, glowing and really just shining light on the place.
You can walk in and they have a super cute little gift shop filled with a lot of German items and fun candy and desserts you can buy to take home with you. In fact next time I go back toward my hometown, I’m going to stop in and get one of those alpine hats.
Now the thing about Schnitzelbank is that you need to prepare yourself for some of the prices and really prepare yourself for the time it takes for your food to get to you, especially when it’s on a weekend evening.
I got a beer and it didn’t come out until the salad for my side dish came out and I was expecting them to bring that out when we got the rest of our drinks, but I thought that was a little odd. However, I got it in the end.
We ended up getting the Kassler Rippchen with the sweet and sour sauerkraut and German potatoes. The meat was actually really delicious. It was juicy, it was plentiful and it was cooked well.
The German potatoes were actually really good too. They’re sort of like hash browns, but I think they could have been seasoned a little better.
The issue though was the plating. The sweet and sour sauerkraut was placed under the meat, which I think gave two issues here. I think it was problematic when you’re trying to separate your flavors, because the sweet and sour is already potent enough (I should have gotten the regular sauerkraut). Also, the meat beinng slapped on top of it made the sauerkraut’s texture become mushy and almost hard to eat. To be fair the sauerkraut was still tasty, but it could have been placed differently to make it more enjoyable to eat in my opinion.
Overall though, the place is a lot of fun. The decoration and the set up inside is super neat and I love their little bar area. The servers are dressed in German themed outfits to add some extra theatrics to the place and the servers are generally super friendly.
I think this place is worth going to and you get to experience a different culture that we have in Southern Indiana.
Also, for fun, I suggest that you should learn the Schnitzelbank song. They have the lyrics posted up on the wall by the entrance!

Ian makes the best Moscow Mules is Dubois County! Great salad bar and Wurst platter. Great service and hospitality for the last 25 years!

Today was our yearly visit to the Schnitzelbank for some of the best German food in Indiana and this place is a tradition. From southern Indiana its a one hour drive to Jasper but well worth the trip.
To open with Kraut Balls are a MUST appetizer, this is ground beef, pork, sauerkraut & seasoning mixed with cream cheese then rolled in bread crumbs. The Half Livers & Half Gizzards are also spot on. For those that wish to eat on the healthier side then of course salads are offered.
Schnitzelbank has so many great offerings, my wife loves the lunch buffet and sampled the
3-​bean salad, cornbread salad, sauerkraut salad, German potato salad. The biggest winners were the Reuben soup which even captures the taste of wheat bread in a soup. Also, for the best & freshest summer salad in our state then this is the place to go.
I went with today’s lunch special which was two pieces of fall off the bone fried chicken with sweet corn and milk gravy mashed potatoes. To quote a friend of mine «good eats»
Our waitress couldn’t have been nicer and made certain we were taken care of. This is a casual restaurant and they also have a nice beer selection.
And at the end of our lunch my wife said we should really comeback more often.

It’s been more than 35 years since we have been here. And, it’s just as good as we remember it being!

Having spent more than my fair share of time in southern Indiana, it was inevitable that I would get around to reviewing The Schnitzelbank, heretofore referred to as «The Schnitz» going forward. With an establishment as revered as this one, and with literal decades of business to its name, a lot of folks might assume this business would be content to coast on its reputation. That would could not be further from the truth as, after all these years, The Schnitz continues to be a vital destination for anyone looking for German cuisine, hospitable staff and a beer selection that makes some of the pubs we have in Texas look small by comparison.
The Schnitz walks a fine line between «tourist trap» and «local watering hole.» Sure, they have a goofy cardboard cutout in front for photo opportunities whenever you have had one too many beers, and yeah, the gift shop off the entrance is kitschy beyond belief (it’s a toss-​up between the felt Tyrolean hat and the chicken hat with dangling legs for what may be the guiltiest pleasure of headwear one can purchase) but do not let those first impressions deter you. Once inside the bar or dining room, the touristy stuff is pushed aside in favor of favorable service and an expansive food and drink menu.
Friday night, my Dad and I stopped in for a beer. Or multiple beers, really. The dining room closes at 10:00 p.m., but the bar kind of operates on a «we close whenever the last person leaves» type of schedule. Sure, if some nights are slower than others, they’ll close early, but we saw a wide variety of signs of life when we walked in. We sat down and Jackie, the bar manager, was over in seconds to wait on us. And there are not enough positive words for Jackie: she was like that family member you forgot you had but immediately wished you kept in touch with. She was quick with the wit and even quicker with the service — I asked if they had any Belgian ales and she rattled off a few I had no idea existed! And when one foamed up too quick for what would pass for normal human consumption, she was back with a replacement brew in seconds flat. The cast of regulars here all know the staff, and Jackie knows all of them. If you’re stopping in for a drink at night, I cannot recommend this place enough, if only for the service and hospitality of Jackie and her team. Also, the 107 or 170 beers on offer help — I do not remember how many exactly they have but I know it’s 100-​something and there was a 7 in the total at one point. If they could get Maredsous 8 or Trois Pistoles on the menu, they would be unstoppable. The fact that they willfully have Xingu, when bars in Texas even have a hard time getting that one, is pretty doggone amazing.
Then came Saturday night after we broke free from our mini family reunion/​Kentucky Derby party/​exercise in insanity. We stopped by here for dinner and opted to sit in the bar (at a table this time). The place was hopping and we seemed to have a tag team of waitresses helping us out. I want to say one was Judy, and the other was Wonder Woman Part Two. These two gals helped each other out and ensured none of the dozens of patrons in the bar were going without their food or drink for long. And they did it with smiles and senses of humor! Two more points for the staff, and even more points for the beer menu broken down by country. Hello, beer from Slovakia.
Unfortunately, those points did not translate entirely to the food. While the menu is unintentionally hilarious (my favorite item descriptions being «Its Grandma again» for the «Half Livers & Half Gizzards,» and «Made in our kitchen from a machine imported from Germany» for «Spatzle»), the food can be hit or miss. Escargot-​stuff mushrooms take two wonderful items and mash them up in a largely forgettable appetizer, while lemon pie on the opposite end of the spectrum is tart without the taste. Fortunately, the well-​regarded salad bar is completely worthy of the hype it receives, their fried chicken is mouth-​wateringly succulent and that Schnitzelburger was so good, I almost took off a few of my fingers on accident while shoveling it into my mouth. Add in the lyrics done in rebus form of the titular song painted on the wall, and a trio of TV sets tuned to sporting events, not to mention the regular locals and out-​of-​towners crowding into the bar, and this is definitely a hot spot for nighttime dining and drinking in town.
The Schnitz has stood the test of time through a blending of genuinely wonderful service, German authenticity, a menu that is not afraid to take chances, food for customers also not afraid to take chances, and a touristy angle that serves the southern Indiana corridor well. It’s definitely worth experiencing at least once but do not be surprised if you find yourself back on more than a couple occasions.

4 employees standing there when we walked in and not one said hi or offered to help until I asked. Really good food especially the German potato salad but the spatzels were yucky noodles. The prices are high! We drove a long way to try this restaurant. Such a let down for them to ignore us but the restaurant atmosphere, waitress and food made the trip worth while.

Who Knew, good German food in southern Indiana. The meal was outstanding. Love this place. Great little German place.

Sorry Schnitz. Overrated. The buzz is the tourist feel of the place but the food is below average and the service has been unfriendly each time I visited.

Good beer and food in a sea of fast food.
The Schnitz is one of the only places in Jasper to get good beer and food. Liters of Spaten Optimator, fried chicken livers, and prime rib (Saturday nights only) makes for a happy German. Also, a full salad bar complete with soup and pickled herring is included. The atmosphere is adorned with silly little German sayings, expensive cuckoo clocks, and a little souvenir shop. A good reason to make you feel like visiting Jasper is a good idea.
