Established in 2014.
Highland Academics is a non-profit educational institution providing services to students in the local Jamaica community. Highland Academics is located at 162 – 10 Highland Avenue, Jamaica, NY and is a division of 82nd Street Academics.
Our mission is to help students take «early steps to college». We offer a set of linking programs from preschool to pre-college that complement and reinforce the public education curricula. In a community where the majority of homes speak languages other than English, our goal is that all students, regardless of home language, have access to quality higher education. 82nd Street Academics has grown to serve more than 800 families annually. During this time, we have developed a comprehensive, year-round and effective range of holistic services that address the children’s educational, social and emotional needs.
Meet the Manager
Dr. Ronald T.
Manager
Dr. Ron Tompkins has a personal commitment to the mission of 82nd Street Academics. Half of his family has Khmer or Vietnamese as their first language. He himself found a way out of poverty through education. Dr. Ron holds the Ph.D. in Higher Education Policy from SUNY Buffalo and the MBA from SUNY IT Utica.
Dr. Ron’s work is chief keeper of the flame. He works on plans to develop 82nd Street Academics and make it better. The current plan is to expand to four student centers such as those in Jackson Heights and Jamaica. He meets with local school and community leaders so that 82nd Street is part of the larger good story of New York City. His chief joy is parent events such as Principal’s Night, Gifted and Talented Night, and Legacy Honors Night and its always a delight to be recognized and welcomed by students.
