Specialties
Hein & Company is a used and rare bookstore in the heart of the Motherlode. We specialize in local history, hard-to-find and out-of-print books, first editions, collectibles, art, DVDs, and some antiques. We have two floors of books and other items. Probably somewhere around 600,000 books. We are considered a mainstay of Downtown Jackson. Come and browse and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. We also sell local live theatre tickets — Volcano Theatre and Main Street Theatre Works. Our two bookstore cats live here. Say hello to Emily and Edgar when you visit!
History
Established in 1992.
In 1992, Hein and Company Bookstore was established by Wolf Hein in the little town of Plymouth, California — entryway to the Shenandoah Wine Region. The little blue bookstore was not able to contain all of the books, and a new location was scouted for. Wolf brought Hein and Company to a bigger store on Water Street in Jackson, California and lasted there only a couple more years before the shelves could hold no more. In 1997, Hein and Company moved again to the Krabbenhoft building on Main Street in Jackson where it has since enjoyed filling out the 12,000-square-feet space of the first two floors. In 2009, this space began to flow over, and an annex was secured at 115 Main Street, Jackson to hold its overflow books each to sell for 99-cents. The second store annex is now called Pastimes, representing the books, vhs’s, and vinyl there, but also Pastimes refers to the many antique items for sale there too.
Meet the Business Owner
Wolf H.
Business Owner
Wolf (short for Wolfgang) Hein grew up with business in his blood. After working in and managing retail businesses in the midwest, he came out to California in his early 20s, following the music of the Beach Boys. Before he could head south, Wolf made a home in Tiburon on the San Francisco Bay. He became a house painter and can point to many «Painted Ladies» in San Francisco that bear the mark of his brush. Soon, he became a proprietor of not one, but two restaurants in San Francisco — one on Polk Street and one in the Avenues. A few busineses after that, Wolf was ready to embark on a business that would hold his passion for books — hence, Hein and Company Bookstore was born. He has been the proprietor of this business since 1992. He is knowledgeable not only in rare books, but he has a passion and knowledge in art and antiques. At present, he is owner of the bookstore, an annex of the bookstore called Pastimes, and has antiques at Treasures Merchantile, all on Main Street.

«It has the best antiques, unusual items, one-of-a-kind „treasures“ on Main Street.»
