History

Established in 1923.

Garden Country Day School was started in 1923 by a group of parents and teachers who were interested in creating a superior educational environment for their children. The name «Garden» was chosen to reflect the garden apartment complex built by Edward A. MacDougall in the then rural area of Jackson Heights. In the Spring of 1929, Garden graduated its first senior class of three proud graduates. In 1937, Garden became an independent, college preparatory school.

Garden has continued to serve the community as a premier educational institution. Under the leadership of the current Headmaster, Dr. Richard Marotta, Garden continues to meet the needs of its students and families. Since the late 1980’s, nursery and prekindergarten programs have been added, the English Language Academy has enhanced Garden’s multicultural strength, and the Summer Program made Garden a year-round resource for our community.

Garden School remains an important part of the educational life of New York City.
