Description

Specialties

Tellers was created to provide patrons with a classic American Chophouse menu serving USDA Prime «dry aged» beef, also featuring fresh seafood, shellfish, pasta, poultry and game in an atmosphere that is at once classic and contemporary. It is a sensual, brilliant engagement of color, texture, and light. From the spectacular dining room dominated by 30-foot ceilings and art deco friezes to the clubby bar and cocktail area, you will be transported to a time when superior service and quality were the norm.

History

Established in 1998.

Originally constructed in 1927 and charted as the Islip National Bank, the building remained as a banking institution (Security National, Chemical, Chase) until 1997. When Chemical and Chase merged, management decided to close the older building (now Tellers) and move all deposits across the street to the newer facility that was a Chase Manhattan branch.

Beginning in January 1998, negotiations began to convert the beautiful old landmark into a first class restaurant facility. Eighteen months and a great deal of effort have produced what we proudly call Tellers, a classic American Chophouse. All the original interior and exterior details dating to 1927 were painstakingly restored (and in some cases reproduced) by artisans and craftsmen so that the wonderful feeling you now experience when inside or outside of the building is the same as that experienced in 1927!

Meet the Business Owner

John, Michael and Kurt B.

Business Owner

The Bohlsen family began in the restaurant business in 1931 with a little coffee shop in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. Herman Bohlsen, his wife Hilda, and his brother Gerhardt, ran the shop until 1938.

John Bohlsen, son of Herman, bought his first fast food restaurant in Deer Park in 1969 after earning his Master’s Degree in Business and serving as an officer in the US Navy during the Vietnam era for four years. He remained in the fast food business until 1983 when he sold his 50-plus restaurants.

In 1987 John purchased the Beachtree Café and from 1999 to the present proceeded to design and construct four restaurants along with his two sons, Michael and Kurt, for the next generation of restaurants in the «Bohlsen Restaurant Group” — Tellers An American Chophouse, H2O: Seafood & Sushi, Prime: An American Kitchen and Bar, Verace: True Italian and their latest addition, Monsoon: Steak & Sushi.
