Meet the Manager

Irving G.

Manager

Holocaust survivor Irving Gelman established Tarbut V’Torah in memory of his daughter, Naomi Gelman Weiss, in 1991. Irving’s passion for Jewish education has a long and loving history beginning with his stewardship of Yavneh Academy and later embracing the Frisch High School in New Jersey.

Irving came to the United States with $ 5.41 in his pocket. After retiring from the successful textile company he built on the East Coast, Irving and his wife Rochelle moved to California. Here he founded Tarbut V’Torah as a tribute to the Tarbut schools in Eastern Europe.

The hundreds of students who have attended TVT affectionately know Irving as «Papa Gelman.» They look forward to being greeted by his big hugs, warm smile and pockets filled with candy. They appreciate his genuine interest in their lives. In the process of building a school for our children, Irving has built a community committed to Jewish education.
