Pogue’s Run Grocer is a full-​service, community-​owned grocery store that is open to the public. We offer: local, natural and organic groceries; fresh produce; lunch specials featuring cold and hot deli sandwiches, fresh house-​made soups, natural potato chips and natural sodas; bulk ingredients, snacks, spices, coffees and teas; natural paper products (toilet paper, paper towls, etc.); natural cleaning supplies; and catering (bag lunches, platters, soups, salads, sides, drinks and cookies).

History

Established in 2010.

Pogue’s Run Grocer is the first community-​owned grocery store of the Indy Food Cooperative. We are a full-​scale grocery store providing access to healthy food choices and education about health and nutrition to our near eastside, downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.

The mission of the Indy Food Cooperative is to provide public education about health and nutrition, to create neighborhood economic opportunities through direct job creation and sourcing from local producers, and to provide access to healthy food choices for low to moderate income residents on the Near East side of Indy.

Manager

Nate has more than 10 years of experience in the natural and organic grocery industry. His areas of expertise include food labeling, natural supplements, herbs and spices, food chemistry, specialized diets (like gluten-​free, celiac, vegan, autism, yeast-​free, and macrobiotic), fermentation and cultures, meat processing, and creative recipes. Roberts’ favorite food is anything barbecued.

Came here to eat dinner last week as they have several vegetarian options. Unfortunately the lady who took our order was very rude. She was upset that the sandwich I ordered was the «hardest one» to make. My husband also ordered a sandwich and she replied «oh, you too??» It was quite embarrassing. I ordered the D.J. (tempeh sloppy joe) which she later informed me after we paid that they were out of cole slaw which was supposed to be on the sandwich. Needless to say my sandwich was very dry and not good. My husband however enjoyed the Rambo (vegan Reuben) and the grocery store seemed nice. We really try to support local businesses especially on the eastside but we probably won’t be back anytime soon.

I go here often for lunch since its one of the few fresh food vegetarian options by my job. I usually get the veggie sandwich as a wrap (whole wheat I believe). It comes with house made sun dried tomato hummus, olives, spinach, onions, your choice of cheese and I can’t remember what else. The deli is opened until 7pm I believe so I also get sandwiches on the go for dinner. The usually have 2 soups and bean chili every day along with a salad bar and bread from Amelia’s. They also have vegan options to go like vegan chickpea salad, vegan peanut noodle, and curried couscous. They also have several Kombucha options, herbs and spices by the oz. and tea and coffee to go! Basically its my go-​to on the east side.

Great selection of farm fresh eggs and locally sourced animal products from near by farms. A lot is frozen but quite a bit is not. Though they have some challenges.
Once the cream was past its sell by date. Another time the cream I got home and opened the next morning was spoiled even though the sell by date was good. So I’ve stopped buying those items. Don’t know if it is a delivery or storage issue.
The pickled beets hasn’t been restocked in at least a 6 week time frame that I had checked and even asked the cashiers if they could reorder it.
If you need stuff from the deli be sure to place your order before you do your shop. It can be painfully slow to get the deli order filled.

I love coming to Pogue’s. All of their produce is local and delicious. Tons of organics and the bulk section rocks. I also like that they carry Amelia’s bread. I highly recommend

First visit here — in the hood. The rebound from poverty here is slow and kudos to those like this stir who are the vanguard in the gentrification effort. I had a great deli sandwich — an excellent muffuletta with capicolla, mortidella and the requisite olive relish on a ciabatta bun. I’m a huge fan of the classic Central Grocery Muffuletta in NOLA and, though not the original, I was pretty impressed and satisfied. My friend had a grilled ham & cheese with which he was quite happy. May be a tad pricey but you get top drawer cold cuts in a shop that specializes in organic foods. The dining area of this grocery store has a half dozen spartan tables & chairs with no table service. Not elegant but utilitarian. I’ll be back because what they do they do right.

Have to hand it to Pogue’s. They have made quite a run at their current location. I appreciate being able to stop in here to pick up local products. It’s a convenient stop for Smoking Goose, Fischer Farms, and Pat’s Gnaw Bone products just to name a few. A sandwich café, soup, and salad bar round out their services making it a full albeit small natural grocery store.

A splendid store with a great selection of deli sandwiches and a small but thorough grocery section. Starting with the sandwiches, these are simply fantastic, they use fresh local ingredients and you can absolutely taste that. The sandwiches truly are delicious and 100% worth the trip!
I love this grocery store, that statement is as straightforward as I can be. The items avaialble here are hard to find anywhere else outside of online, and they try to be as local as possible. They have everything; dairy, meat, produce, cleaning products, dry groceries, health and beauty. All of these sections have vegan/​organic/​vegetarian/​gluten-​free twists; really you cannot find this selection at one local store.

Love the idea, but before I would dream of eating anything prepared here I had to check the ladies room for cleanliness. It was truly disgusting and not like they had a big lunch rush. Like not cleaned in a while.
Lots of local (already packaged) products I will come back for, though.

They have a small sandwich café here and the food is awesome. And inexpensive. If you like niche groceries, the selection is small, but it saves you a long drive to WF. Nice staff here.

I have done some shopping at Pogue’s Run, but I’ll admit, I’m a little intimidated by the grocery part. So, for this review, I want to focus on the deli. I’ve gotten many sandwiches there and I’ve always loved them (though I tend to usually get the reuben). They’re always fantastic. They have a small area with seats, a soda fountain (I’m not sure the brand of soda), kettle chips for a side (or you can choose from one of three soups or an amazing salad bar (though I love all of the toppings, I haven’t found a salad dressing that I like). If you go often enough, get their sandwich card (it says after 10 punches, you get $ 10 off a $ 25 purchase).
So, if you’re ever on the near east side, stop at Pogue’s Run for a few groceries and while you’re shopping, order yourself a sandwich from the deli.

We’re really fortunate to have Pogue’s Run. It’s an east side gem.
The focus is on local, organic, and fairly traded food and products. The people who run this place really care about what they do and it shows.
The deli rocks: menu comprised of half solid, delicious meat options and half tasty, unique vegan options. Fresh soups made in-​house daily. Fresh, deli-​made vegan slaws and salads. Lots of tasty cold beverage options. It’s our go-​to for lunch any given day. Well-​priced, too.
The bulk bins, bulk spices, and bulk teas selection is huge! Beer and wine carefully curated. A small, but well-​stocked selection of aromatherapy and homeopathic remedies. Good selection of packaged vegan baked goods. Local meat, milk, eggs. Produce is always on point, but especially in the summer once the good local stuff starts coming in.
It’s true some items are expensive and we definitely don’t do all of our shopping here, but you can actually save money here with the bulk and spices and considering that they’re the only spot around where you can find certain specialty items without having to drive 30 minutes to the north side.

Just had lunch here with my family. We are on our way through town on 70 to St. Louis. Found it on Unilocal a d stopped in. Cheddar broccoli soup was hot and tasty. Pastrami sandwich with homemade slaw was great. Picked up a few road snacks too, including a local apple that was crunchy and tastes fresh, even in late December! Kids loved it and at their pb and j without issue. In laws loved it. Happy all around.
The neighborhood was fine; we opted out of a little walk to stretch our legs. Store staff were helpful and friendly — replenished the TP in the restroom for us. Would definitely return if driving through town again.

Love this little store and wish it was closer to where I live… still worth the couple miles to get a delicious sandwich. This store is loaded with natural, local, organic, vegan and gluten free. Though I love natural and local options, I don’t 100% limit my diet by any of these rules, but love that you can find the unique items here that aren’t easy to find in the bigger groceries.
The best part of all is the deli! Great selection for both carnivores and vegetarians alike! I personally sampled two meat varieties at my recent visit. The capicola and provolone instantly caught my eye as I’m a sucker for the buttery provolone cheese and the salty delciousness of capicola, but this sandwich had it’s own style with housemade giardinera and basil mayo! It really rounded out the overall flavor of the sandwich. I was also able to try the Tuscan Turkey. All I can say about that was I was loving the Kalamata olives!
On the side, I couldn’t resist the Wasabi mushroom noodle soup and craft ginger beer, which also did not disappoint.
I’m sorry I did not try this little store&deli out earlier despite many recommendations from friends! Now that I’ve broken the seal, don’t try to keep me away! I can see myself enjoying many a sandwich and stocking my pantry from here in the future.

I’m so happy this little gem (and it is, guys, a GEM) is two blocks from my house!
We do not do all of our grocery shopping here. As others have noted, some products are a little expensive for us. However, we love the fresh, seasonal produce. It’s the nearest place for us to get yogurt from Trader’s Point. They have a great selection of cheeses. (In fact, prior to a snowstorm last year, I ran there to get good cheese and crackers, in case I got snowed in. Priorities.) They also carry tamales from Tlaolli, which is another local, eastside business (located at Rural and Washington, next to the library).
As nearly everyone else has noted, their bulk section is AWESOME. Spices, teas, granolas, grains… something for everyone.
The café has expanded since they first opened, and now includes a salad bar, which always has some great (and fresh!) options, without being overwhelming. Their sandwiches and soups are tasty, and their sandwich of the week always includes a veg/​vegan option. Deli meats are Boar’s Head, and at least some of the cheese is from Indiana creameries!
They also have a small, but generally solid, craft beer selection.
Last, but certainly not least, they have an excellent staff, who are always ready and able to answer questions, and just be all-​around helpful.

How have I not been here before? Jeeze Louise, this place reminds me of Good Earth but with a more produce and groceries, along with the café.
Ruth’s Rib Tips (name?) was a truck outside smoking meat and people could walk up and place orders. The smell wafted through the grocery store.
I met a former coworker here for lunch based on her suggestion. I said «isn’t that a grocery store?» and she explained the café to me. I ordered the special of the day — bacon, cucumber, onion, spinach, feta and sauce on a pita. While it was delicious, it was very difficult to eat as a sandwich. With no knives available, I managed to fork through it but I wish I asked how it was prepared. My coworkers sandwich looked delicious and a little more manageable than mine.
If I lived on that side of town, I’d be at Pogue’s run several times a week. Since I didn’t walk through the whole store, I’ll come back to comment on that later.

This review is only for the deli side of the place. I never knew they had this until friends invited me for lunch. The nice thing is that if you want other things the deli doesn’t provide (like chips or iced tea), you can buy it from the grocery store and walk it over! If you want handcrafted sodas, they have a soda fountain.
I ordered the reuben. I’m not sure it was the best I’ve ever had, but if not, it was darned close. The marble rye was heavenly, perfectly soft in the middle with a crispy crust. Tons of meat and cheese. I wish they would have been as generous with the kraut and Thousand Island, but they were happy to give me more dressing when I asked.
The sandwich was monstrous — large enough to share or take half home. Or if you are like my small but mighty pals, just eat the whole thing in one sitting while I watch in amazement.

I’ve mainly visited Pogue’s Run to replenish my pantry with Pogue’s great selection of bulk spices, beans and grains. Before Pogue’s, I was stocking up during visits to Bloomingfoods. Although Penzey’s and many local international markets also offer a unique selection of spices, at Pogue’s I can only purchase super-​small amounts of less-​frequently used spices and not worry about a whole bag of cardamom pods sitting in my pantry for 5 years (and losing their freshness). So, I can buy my 10 cardamom pods, my ½ tsp of anise, etc., and leave happy… but probably leave the cashiers frustrated at ringing up dozens of near-​empty bags. But, if they are frustrated, they never show it and are always super-​friendly, asking me what I plan to make with a one-​pound bag of vital wheat gluten flour or quinoa.
I’ve not ordered from the deli and typically do not purchase produce from this location, but whole-​heartedly endorse the bulk section (and the hot & spicy Primal strips!). If you avoid the candy and higher-​priced items, you can really save money here in purchasing your spices, lentils, grains, and other items via bulk.
