Growing up with a father and older brother who played hockey, naturally I followed suite and spent many weekends skating here and watching them play. I love the building; to me it’s a part of my history, but as a spectator be prepared: it’s chilly. They don’t have much in the way of insulation and heaters in the stands. Check their website for open skate times; they offer many open skate events throughout the year and have skate rental, too! If you have never skated, give it a whirl!

I will be totally honest, I’ve lived in Indianapolis since 2004 and NEVER knew where the heck this place was. Since the Ice hockey team had to start playing elsewhere, we decided to watch them play when they were at Pan Am vs the field house. Power in numbers so we went with a pair of friends who have also never seen this place(they live downtown even!). Thanks to smart-phones, we wandered in the right direction and found it. How does an ice rink hide so well in an urban area? The Pan Am center is like the TARDIS on Dr. Who, smaller on the outside than the inside. The place seemed clean and well kept. The bleacher seating was packed, uncomfortable, and hard to maneuver around, but it served its purpose. The game itself was hard to see with the netting and the close proximity, but it was enjoyable. Be warned though, it’s COLD as heck in that place due to the ice. I’ve seen the Ice play elsewhere and have never lost feeling in my toes, so it must be something with the layout of the building. I’m glad I discovered the Pan Am center, but I probably won’t be back unless I needed to for some random reason.
