I’ve been shopping at 88 since they were called 7 – 11.Even in this inflationary scene we’re in they have some of the best protein prices in town. It’s not a fancy stainless steel cookie cutter store that you find other places it’s a family store that has honest prices great fresh produce and meats. It serves a vital service to every place they are located. Hey you are shoppin’ for food not «ambiance».

Yes, this store is kind of shady. It’s not terribly clean, for one thing, and when I first walked in here, I was struck by a really gross, urine-​y/​fishy odor that permeates the store. Not cool. If you can stand that, though, there are some good prices to be had, and some unusual food. If you’re into crazy meat products, for example, this is your place. Hamhocks, jowl meat, pig feet, chitterlings (yes really), tubs of lard… the entire back section is a carnivore’s paradise. I was kind of disgusted, yet fascinated.
So if you’re wanting to buy something gross, like a huge slab of some part of an animal you never thought you’d eat, hit this place up! I definitely know plenty of boys who’d be all up on that. If, however, you’re a hummus-​and fruit-​type, you might want to skip this store for someplace cleaner.

I was scared to walk into this run-​down grocer near my apartment when running out for an emergency lime (salsa), but the prices here redeem the sketchiness. Two cartons of strawberries for $ 3 and a whole chicken for $ 0.99? These prices are incredible.
They were out of limes. I settled for a lemon (for $ 1).
Oh yeah – they actually are locally owned.
