The National Park Service was given responsibility for President Harry S Truman’s house after his wife, Bess, died in 1982. Since then, the national historic site has grown to include Harry Truman’s grandmother’s farm house where the future president lived from age 22 – 33, the home of his cousins Noland, and two bungalows owned by Bess Truman’s brothers.
History
Established in 1983.
When President Harry S Truman’s wife, Bess, passed away in 1982, she willed their home and all their belongings to the people of the United States. The National Park Service has preserved the home exactly as Mrs. Truman left it. Visitors are able to see in detail how the president and his wife lived during their retirement years in their old home in Independence after having spent eight years in the White House.
Meet the Manager

Manager
National Park Ranger who began working at Harry S Truman National Historic Site in 1991. Not the «owner,» technically; the park really belongs to the people of the United States. But I’m one of the people responsible for taking care of it.
