Coyote Cal’s

it’s a really cool spot. It’s on a cliff over looking the beach. There’s a sandy area right next to the main building that you camp on if you choose. Tons of bathrooms and stuff to do like pool, Foosball, Thai massage, a bar, and a community fire pit. Staff can be unfriendly at times but it’s still an awesome spot!

Both of the previous reviews reflect the two outstanding issues relating to Coyote Cal’s.
1. Getting there by bus as a hitch hiker requires getting across the boarder by noon. Getting a bus to Ensenada is easy as there is a busy bus schedule between the two cities. The bus from Ensenada to Erendira is a rare bird and is often very late. If you don’t get to the turn off on the highway to Erendira at least an hour before dark, continue to San Vicente by bus and take a taxi back from there to Coyote Cal’s.
2. Coyote Cal’s is a lovely location and has a wonderful young, afternoon/​evening host called Cheetah. Cheetah is a performance artist/​aerialist, so you may be lucky to catch one of her shows. The morning host, owner Rick, is often monosyllabic and expressionless — unusual qualities for a hostel owner/​host. Extended dialogue with Rick is unlikely. The owner suggests that the hostel is busy all year round but my experience suggests that it is less so.
The Coyote Cal’s building is lovely, austere with large windows from the dining area and dorms that look over a dramatic ocean scene. The hostel is spotlessly clean. For guests it provides a complimentary light breakfast of a single waffle (or two eggs) and a coffee. For non residents breakfast is $ 5. The area itself is built up with a variety of shacks, mainly local people living subsistence lives often related to fishing. The locals are warm and inviting; if you speak Spanish they are easy to engage in conversation, smiling often.
If you are driving you are better off with 4WD as the dirt road from Erendira village to Coyote Cal’s is poor condition — great fun on a dirt bike or a quad.
Spanish, of course, helps in the small stores of the village. The fishing is spectacular and there is a steady stream of surfers that make it to the area close by, south of the hostel.
If you are coming to fish or surf and are part of a group of friends, I would recommend Coyote Cal’s. If you are a single traveler I think there may be more fun destinations on the Baja to spend time at.

Nice place in a great town but stay away from the American owner Rick if he happens to be around.
The staff is friendly and helpful, but the there’s a dark cloud hanging over this place when the the proprietor is on site. There’s been a history of negative reviews and complaints about this guy for over 10 years and I’ve witnessed his highs and lows. Its a shame because it could really be a big hit for travelers and a «go-​to» destination.

EASIEST WAY: Rent a car and head straight down HWY 1 *approx 4 hrs.
HARD WAY: Take a PLANE to San Diego Airport, Public BUS to San Ysidro Transportation Center -$ 2.25, Another bus to end of line -$ 3.25, Walk across the border –FREE, MOTORBUS to Ensenada -$ 12.50, WALK to FIND then TRY to catch a BUS to Erendira… GOOD LUCK, they actually only run twice per day at 5:30am and 4pm -$ 10.00, IF YOU ARE SUCCESSFUL… Then they drop you off at their last stop and you WALK, HITCHHIKE *possible during the day* or PAY a PRIVATE TAXI -$ 22 to travel the remaining 12 or so miles on an unpaved/​pothole filled «road». IF you Arrive at night, then you are SCREWED. Wear comfy shoes and bring a flashlight *watch out for barking dogs at EVERY house along the way*. 10 – 12 HOURS LATER, you have arrived. ONCE YOU HAVE ARRIVED: It’s worth the trek.
«Lulu» is a town local and has been running the place for 6+ years. She can help you find EVERYTHING and knows EVERYBODY! She makes breakfast in the morning and tends the Barefoot Bar in the evening. She rides a motorcycle, need I say more? *Smiles*

The place is Very Clean.
Beds are SUPER Comfy *$ 15 per person per night.
Air is Fresh.
Views are AMAZING.
A Little Spanish goes a long way
Seafood available in town is caught fresh every morning!
CONS: live and learn…
NO INTERNET *may change in the summer
NO ATM’s *BEST to convert to PESOS when you cross the border — exchange rate is sketchy otherwise.
Verizon and ATT doesn’t have cellphone service *Tele Com is the ONLY Provider
Plan on walking A LOT to do anything, unless you have a car
Thai massage is NOT AVAILABLE year round, CALL BEFOREHAND.
Don’t plan on going to town UNLESS you know some ESPANOL
Groceries, SHOP BEFORE you arrive!!!
That being said, we had an AWESOME TIME at Coyote Cal’s. We will be coming BACK in April for some warmer weather… this time we will rent a car and bring our bicycles!
