We take both classic and timeless portraits on our beautiful beaches, celebrating your family or special time in your life. Sarah Jane Thornington of the The Studio by the Sea wants to create the portrait you’ve been dreaming of.

We are a portrait photography studio on Cape Cod, specializing in photographing on the beach. Family portraits, portraits of children, high school senior yearbook photos on the beautiful beaches of Cape Cod or in our studio. We also create maternity and newborn portraits. Sarah Jane Thornington says she is a photographer of life, because she photographs all of those moments which together make up our life. New babies, family reunions, graduating from high school, turning 8, all great reasons to celebrate with a portrait.

History

Established in 2001.

The Studio by the Sea has been a photography studio continuously since 1957, Sarah being the 5^th owner. Sarah worked at the previous studio, The Studio of William T. Clarke, for almost 10 years after graduating from Hallmark Institute of Photography. When Sarah and her husband, Ray, took over in 2001, they renamed it The Studio by the Sea. They continue to provide photography services to the community, including portraits and school photography, and Sarah volunteers extensively with in the community.

The building has a great history, it was part of the ‘great fire of Hyannis’ in 1904, at the time the post office. When they replace the building, they moved a school from the West End to be able to reopen the Post Office quicker. Sarah is currently researching more of the history of the building.

Business Owner

Sarah Jane Thornington is a professional photographer on Cape Cod. She was born in London, England, raised in Connecticut and has called Cape Cod home for 28 years this year. She shares her life and business with her husband, Ray, their beautiful daughter, Adriana and a crazy (although becoming less so now she’s 7!) black Lab named Lucy.

Sarah was formally trained at the Hallmark Institute of Photography, and continues her training through workshops, lectures and classes. She is a member of PPA (Professional Photographers of America) and is a past President of the Professional Photographers of Cape Cod (PPOCC). She has served on the board of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, and is her daughter’s Cadette GS Leader, as well as Treasurer of the local Service Unit.
