We visited the Hyannis Star Motor Inn during the peak summer season. Their rates are very low for the resort area of Hyannis, so we did not expect luxury accommodations. The outside appearance is that of a motel from the 50’s or 60’s, but it has fresh paint, and looks fairly quaint. Each room even has its own marked(numbered) parking space. I phoned ahead for a reservation and received permission for an early check-in for our midweek stay. We wanted to drop our«stuff» off upon arrival in the area, before initiating our sightseeing activities. They basically offer a regular room and a large room. We had a «large» room, which was larger than most rooms at low-end properties. The main difference that I am aware of between«regular» and«large» is that the regular has a queen bed and a shower only and the large has two double beds and a bath and shower. There is a small functional refrigerator in the room(no microwave though), as well as a flat screen LCDTV with Comcast Cable service. There wasn’t any wifi that I could locate, nor did I see evidence of wired Internet access. The room was quite clean, with carpet that appears to be fairly new. The air conditioning was unlike any I have previously encountered. There is an outlet vent and a return air vent, both wall-mounted at floor level. There is no thermostat in the room, so there is(presumably) a centrally controlled thermostat elsewhere. I did find that the room tended to get a little too warm occasionally before the a/c cycled on for cooling. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We really wanted to like this property. We prefer direct access motels/motor inns, and they are becoming more and more difficult to find. This was such a visually appealing property and we hoped it would be our«place to go» on future visits to The Cape(this was our first visit to The Cape). There was an ac powered air freshener in the room, which gave my wife a sinus headache. Once we realized the issue, we unplugged it. Unfortunately, the beds in our room undid all the wonderful expectations we had. The beds were extremely noisy(sounding like a heavy duty tarp is wrapped around the mattress), creating a very loud noise with ANY movement on the bed. The beds were also intolerably uncomfortable. Initially, I went to sleep, hoping to get some rest, in spite of the discomfort. However, after about two hours, I awakened to find the room uncomfortably warm, and my back and shoulders complaining strongly of their current bed environment. After finding that my wife had not been able to go to sleep at all, we discussed our options and decided to go home to a bed that we knew was comfortable. So, at 11pm, we left the Hyannis Star Motor Inn and travelled 2+ hours to our home and refreshing sleep. I don’t know if all the beds at this property have the same level of noise and discomfort, but our experience was very disappointing. I personally do not like their website, because it offers a link to «Rates and reservations» but the linked page fails to offer either rates or reservations, instead simply informing web visitors to phone for reservations or rates. In spite of the fact that the bed was intolerably uncomfortable, I still give the property two stars because the staff is very nice and helpful and the property«looks» good. If I know that they put new beds in place, I would plan to return on multiple occasions, but with those beds we had — not at any price!
