Lincoln Caverns & Whisper Rocks

Loved this cave and the tour guide was very sweet and knowledgeable! We was able to point out special things about the cave that other guides may not have known about. She spends time in the cave without a tour group and I feel that she really enjoys the caves and what she does for her job. The cave was beautiful and had things that no other cave I have been in had. The pearl room is just amazing it is worth the stairs that you have to climb to get there.

This makes a great day-​trip. Not a hugely touristy area, which is nice. Decent gift shop for those who like gift shops.
There are actually two caves you go through. First is the larger, then the smaller. The guide gives a lot of general cave information as well as information specific to that cave. Lots of history and unique facts about cave formations.
The caves are lit, but dimly and only in the area your group is in. Lights are turned off after each section, otherwise algae can grow. It’s not for those unsteady on their feet. There are some stairs, and they’re uneven in height and width. Handrails are in place, but don’t rely too heavily on them.
You may have to duck a few times to get through. One section, which is optional, you have to shimmy through side-​ways. Larger people wouldn’t be able to get through.
This cave doesn’t have large, magnificent rooms, although a couple of spots were more open and fairly impressive.
This would be a good tour for older kids, it’s not too long but certainly interesting. Younger kids, not so much.
I’d recommend planning to be there about 2 hours. The actual cave tours last about an hour total.

The Lincoln Caverns & Whisper Rocks complex is open at 9AM daily with some exceptions, depending mostly on time of year, and tours run throughout the day. Anyone can visit the complex and explore the gift shop free of charge, but to tour the caverns you’ll need to open your wallet and pay a reasonable fee – about $ 14 per adult, though extensive discount opportunities are listed on the website.
The tour of both Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks (the 2 on-​site crystal cave systems that are currently open to the public) lasted about an hour and was a nice experience. Our tour guide – I can’t believe I don’t recall her name; she was really memorable – was unintentionally hilarious, just a real character. At first the self-​proclaimed «newbie» took a bit of getting used to, but as the tour moved along I think the whole group fell in love with her. We all had fun and learned some things too, such as «cave bacon» and «cave popcorn» and the «idiot» workers (inside joke) who decades ago removed stalactites/​mites to take as souvenirs.
The caverns are cool and damp any time of year, including during our August visit, so dress in layers and choose footwear with decent tread. My flip-​flop Crocs turned out to be pretty ideal. There are some steep-​ish rock steps, but overall the caverns tour seemed safe and wasn’t at all physically demanding.
Told myself I wasn’t going to include this last bit in my review but can’t resist. In the visitor center and gift shop building there’s an incredible amount of Pennsylvania travel brochures and an equally impressive collection of brochures for various caves all over the country. Near the end of our trip I spent a lot of time studying the wall of complimentary literature and in doing so acquired an armful of reading material. At one point the woman behind the counter said to the man behind the counter, «Do these people belong in here?» She was referring to the only non-​employee people in the room – my brother, my sister-​in-​law, my husband, and me. It’s possible she was concerned that perhaps we missed the start of a tour, but her tone indicated she suspected we were pillaging the complimentary literature. I hope I’m wrong about that, because otherwise her comment was incredibly rude.

We went to Lincoln Caverns when we were on vacation in Pennsylvania.
We went on a tour that was about one hour. The guide was very knowledgeable about the caverns and did not seem to be in a rush when we got there.
The whole facility is very clean and well maintained.
There are two options for kids. You could just do a tour of the caverns or you could add panning for gems for $ 5. We chose to pan for gems. We were happy that we did. It is a good experience and you get a lot more gems than you expect.

Very interesting tour of Lincoln Caverns and the adjacent Whispering Rocks Cavern. Kat the Tour Guide was fabulous. Tour last about one hour.
This tour is not good though for very tall people or people with difficulty climbing stairs.
