Lemon Basil

This place was pretty good. It’s supposed to be Thai French fusion, but it’s basically overpriced Thai with a nice atmosphere.
The food was good, not amazing, but good. To be fair, I’m not a huge Thai fan to begin with, but i was not that impressed. My co-​diners all really liked Thai food and really liked it. So there’s that. This place isn’t going to turn you into a Thai lover. The portions are on the smaller side. I was pretty hungry when I came, and was still kind of hungry when I left. I had the «money bags» appetizer which was good, like a crab wonton jawn, I would recommend that. I had the andaman princess dish, which was a seafood pasta which was pretty good, but I would get that and something else.
Service was terrific. Two very attentive waiters and the food came out quick, and we were checked on frequently.

Came for lunch with a friend. I ordered a bento box and some kind of crispy shrimp appetizer. The appetizer was really oily, but not bad. Then for the bento box. Overall, it was a standard bento box– sushi, tempura… However, instead of giving me soy sauce, I got pure balsamic vinegar. I could easily tell. My friend also tasted it and could tell. I asked them to change it and they brought the box back with balsamic vinegar again. On the third time they finally got it. I had some Thai tea which was good, but aside from that, it wasn’t a place I would go back too.
Food was standard, service was not very good, and I wasn’t impressed

Finally came to check this place out since its switch from Café Preeya. We made it for lunch on a Thursday afternoon. They open at 11:30 & we arrived a little after 12 noon.
No one was at the reception desk when we walked in but we were the only ones there.
A gentleman came out & greeted us & we were seated in a little booth in the front.
1^st impression was great. Cute place. Didn’t feel tucked in a strip mall store front. Intimate space & seemed very clean.
I like the paper topped tables. Always seems more sanitary than a glass or wood top that has to be wiped down with Lord knows what kind of dirty rag.
We were immediately poured ice water & given menus.
They have a separate lunch menu, which I like. I can only imagine the portion sizes for lunch are the same as dinner portions. They were substantial. I posted the pictures.
We both started with the lemon basil soup. I had spotted this on their website & on Unilocal when I was checking out their menu & was dying to try it. It didn’t disappoint. More spicy than I had imagined but not too much so ~ delicious! It was boiling hot. Our mouths were watering but it took some ice cubes from our waters & some time (seemed like forever !;) before we could really dig in & start slurping it up. Believe me, dig in we did! You can have it with chicken or shrimp. We both ordered shrimp but my husband was served the chicken by mistake. It was good so he didn’t complain or ask for a switch. My bowl had 3 large shrimp so I gave him 1 of mine. There are also mushrooms, carrots, onions & large basil leaves in it. I guess it’s their signature dish & I would definitely come back for this again.
I ordered the ginger salad which was large & designed for a nice presentation. The ginger dressing was served on the side. It was tasty & refreshing with more texture than I’ve seen/​tasted in others. I also ordered the «Summer Roll». Serving size was more than I expected. There were 2 large rolls with peanut dipping sauce. They were good.
My husband had the $ 9.95 bento box lunch special & it was wonderful ! It came with a ginger salad, sushi, fresh cut watermelon & cantaloupe & he chose the chicken teriyaki for the entrée which was served with white rice. The chicken teriyaki was melt-​in-​your-​mouth good! As a matter of fact, I’ll probably be ordering that next time I go back.
We had a great meal all for under $ 40! Nice local spot.
*Side note — Very impressed with the bathrooms! Immaculate & smelled heavenly! Sure sign of a clean establishment.

First try here. Saturday night. 7:32 pm. No reservation. Walked in. Plenty of set, empty tables. No receptionist at reception booth. Stood for 7 minutes without anyone acknowledging or «seeing» us. Walked out.

Really like this place which is owned by the White Elephant. The two head servers that are always there when we go are excellent — not sure if maybe they are part owners as well. Love the food especially the Lemon Basil soup, tuna entrée and the seafood combo in champagne cream sauce. It’s a cozy byob in a small Huntingdon Valley shopping center. It used to by Café Preyia.
We enjoy it equally as much as White Elephant if not more because of the homemade dessert and will continue to go here because it’s closer to us than White Elephant.

I’m not an expert when it comes to Thai food and I’m not a food snob. But what I do know is fresh ingredients, great flavors, and a nice attentive staff. I had the lemon basil soup to start. Hot and spicy as advertised but not so hot that I couldn’t enjoy the soup. I would come here just for the soup! Next, I had a mussels appetizer (forgot the name). It was very good but I think the soup overshadowed it for me. And finally, I had the Thai jambalaya. It was a great spicy dish with andouille sausage, chicken, shrimp, veggies and rice over a hot and spicy broth. Outstanding!!! The staff is so nice and attentive. I can’t wait to come back.

The food, space, music (soft jazz) and noise level were good. However, 2 servers on a Friday night, a week into being on Groupon is not a good look (We waited about 5 minutes at the front before one of the servers saw us peeking around the corner and came to seat us). The restaurant had about 12 – 14 occupied tables during the time we were there, and 2 people attempting to keep up with service just did not work. About a 15 minute wait to even place our orders after having our water glasses filled and AT LEAST another 20 minutes after we finished appetizers before the entrees were brought out. The mussels and spring roll appetizers were very good. The spring rolls were crispy and light and filled with seafood and veggies. The mussel broth was delicious, could have sopped that up with some bread. Brown fried rice with chicken was seasoned well… Andaman princess was pasta with shrimp and scallops in a cream sauce. The pasta and seafood were cooked well, and the sauce (a white creamy sauce) was tasty… it could have used a tad more salt, but I would order it again. The Thai jambalaya was very good. Had a kick, with Asian fragrances… maybe ginger and cardamom… making it different than the typical jambalaya. The Thai iced tea was also tasty. We looked at the dessert menu but by the time our server came back to get our order we were just ready to go. We had a Groupon, so the meal was definitely a good deal. I’d definitely go back on a non-​weekend day or if I had a good chunk of time to devote to a weekend dinner.

Was driving through the Philly suburbs and saw this Thai place just in time before they closed. The place is decorated nicely… in a comfortable… not too trendy… more of a homey style with bamboo walls and red carnations on the tables. There was 70’s «easy listening» music piped in which I enjoyed because some restaurants play Katie Perry/​Adam Levine/​Nickelback pop music which makes my ears bleed!
Anyway… we had an appetizer called «Shrimp Canes» which was like shrimp put in a blender and then fried with a spring roll batter into a long stick with a dipping sauce. We went crazy over it!!!
We also had a spicy shrimp and mango appetizer which was in a parfait glass. Forgot the name… but it was good too.
We had chicken Pad Thai which tasted the way it should, and the chicken had a nice crispy glaze which I enjoyed.
We also had the duck with raspberry sauce which I would totally get again and again!
For dessert, we had home-​made (yes, the owner told us he makes this himself… not bought outside) bread pudding with coconut ice cream. Delicious! Oh… the Thai Ice Teas were great as well. Service was pleasant and professional.
Will have to stop back next time I’m near Philadelphia!

Lemon Basil, from the same folks who own White Elephant, has moved into the premises previously occupied by Café Preeya. This Thai-​European fusion restaurant is a gem. It is a small BYOB serving delicious Thai inspired dishes. The avocado blossom appetizer was amazing and my daughter enjoyed her Thai mussels. Entrees of chicken and mango, and chicken pad Thai were excellent. The dessert menu was tempting but we were too full to try anything. Next time though (and there will definitely be a next time) I will have to try to save room. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Overall, this was a very good choice for dinner. Take out also available, according to their website.
