Scribner Hollow Lodge

We have stayed here twice before and had good times. It’s the only place in the area with real fireplaces in the rooms. I love the piano bar.
We called last Friday and Saturday then again on Monday to try to make a reservation.
No one called me back.
I am assuming they are having trouble and are going out of business. I tried the facebook page and it’s currently not working.
I hope they are able to come back from whatever financial crisis. If not, someone should buy it and bring it back to it’s original glory.

My friends and I have been coming here for years for the warrior dash and the German festival at hunter mountain. This is my favorite hotel in the area.
The rooms are all unique. We stay in room 38. It has a second floor with two beds and a first floor with a pullout couch fireplace fridge and balcony.
The rooms are dated but very clean. The towels are new and the service rather responsive. We had an issue with our toilet. They couldn’t fix it that day so they gave us the key to the room next door to use their facilities. They also offered to move us but we chose not to.
Here are our favorite things about the hotel
1. The grotto. Hugh Hefner could hang out here. It’s an indoor pool with a water slide (it’s small but cool)
2. The view. It overlooks hunter mountain. Very pretty.
3. The hot tub indoors.
The hotel is old, but because of that it has charm. The rooms are very clean. The staff attentive.
This place could use some upgrades. This includes the AstroTurf leading to the grotto and hot tub. The sauna machines need a paint job or replacement. The restaurant furniture to be upgraded a bit,
Some of the things we have seen improved over the years. New shower curtains, new ac units, new towels and new tiling in some of the bathroom.
This is a pretty place and well located for skiing and hunter mountain.
It isn’t perfect but we love it.

This is simply a clean, dated, painfully average hotel for skiers and riders.
If you’re booking here expecting dinner prepared by Gordon Ramsay, a hot stone buttocks massage with cucumber facial or a private butler suite, I think maybe you are the one with the problem– not the hotel. You don’t buy a used Kia and then bitch that it doesn’t have a heated steering wheel or premium leather trim, right? That’s what a melonhead would do… and you don’t seem that obtuse.
So, if you happen to be a normal human creature, you’ll find the rooms small but sufficient. You’ll ski/​ride at Hunter, go into town for a meal and a beer afterwards, go back to the room and maybe have a little pillow fight and life will go on. That’s all.

Where to begin with this place. … First of all the price per night is absolutely outrageous, 700 $$ for 2 nights?? Unreal! The room is dark, small, I found 2 bugs, the tv was 8″ big, smelled pretty wierd too! We ate breakfast and the bacon literally tasted like it was 20 years old, my wifes french toast was burnt and cold. We informed the waitress/​cook/​front desk person/​cleaning lady (b/​c she was the only person in the entire place) and she cleaned our table and charged us full price for the shitty breakfast anyway. She didn’t even offer to get her something else! ! I would not recommend this place to ANY of my friends or family and I will never stay here again! !

I was on my way when I received the news from my gyno that I was pregnant out of sheer nervousness I called and cancelled my reservation which any pregnant woman would understand, I took a breather and realized and that I still could

Because our one cancellation LOL isn’t that one pitiful excuse «Kristina you could of thought of something better than that «so when we asked to speak to a manager we were told the decision is final and the manager was busy in a meeting «really Kristina how busy could he have been if the hotel was closing down for the day «well I’ve never been to this hotel before nor will I ever recommend this place to anyone! Maybe we should have read all the reviews before even attempting to give this place a chance on how filthy it is and how unprofessional there staff is, So we are kind of glad this happened and we will keep updating you on if the manager makes an attempt to try to make this right or even have the common curtesy to call us back. DO NOT stay here!!! The pool and jacuzzi were disgustingly filthy! The sauna they advertise wasn’t working. The receptionist speaks little English. The food and service are the worst I have ever seen. Dinner was about 3 hours because the service is so slow. I had to ask 4 different people for a glass of wine. They have not updated this place in at least 20 years!!! Horrible!!! The only heat is the fire place. Bathroom shelves uneven so your toiletries fall off. The carpet had stains and bedding not clean. Worst place everrrr!!!

If this place claims to be child-​friendly — it surely is not! Breakfast does not open until 8:30am. I have 3 children under 5 and they wake up at around 6am. There is no food for them until 8:30am. I’m building up to the good part… don’t worry, there’s more. During our 2.5 hour dinner over 4 courses — not ideal for small children… my 18 month old started getting antsy so I picked him up and walked him around. I’m also 4 months pregnant at the time. I kid you not… the owner of the entire «resort» came up to me and asked me to move into the lobby because my little Luke was disturbing the other guests! There were 2 other tables there besides ours and Luke was quiet while I was holding him! The next day, the hostess asked a mother to not brush her daughter’s hair during breakfast. It’s a ski resort people! Who cares?! The only saving grace was that my kids loved the grotto pool. I have never felt more unwelcome in my life. $ 430 per night for this abuse?! WHAT???

I’m not sure where to start. I’m not staying here, just eating at the restaurant. The bar gal, who usually works in the office, was great. She couldn’t make much but she was fun. Musician was cool too, After that, went down hill fast. Our reservation was at 9 and now it’s 1010 and we just got bread. Wait staff just doesn’t know what they’re doing. Now I know why most restaurants fail. If I was sober I’d be really pissed. Go someplace else if you’d like a meal within 2 hours of your reservation. The food better be effing out of this effing world.
Update! Food came! Yeah not worth it. And overpriced. Don’t come here. I was in the army for 8 years and rarely complain about anything, especially food. Don’t do it!

DO NOT STAY HERE!!! This place is absolutely horrendous, especially for the price. Service was awful, the place hasn’t been touched since 1999 at least. They don’t even plow the drive good enough for you to get to your room, so you have to walk a quarter of a mile in the cold and slippery driveway with all your things and this place is the most expensive around. We ended up checking out and checking in across the street. The hunter inn was cheaper 100% better. The staff was rude and unaccommodating, this place is a joke in general and needs owners who care not cheapskates.
DO WASTE YOUR TIME OR HARD EARNED MONEY ON THIS DUMP!!!

The Scribner Hollow Lodge may have lived up to the superlatives in it’s brochure back in 1993, but it is now a dated ski lodge in desperate need of a makeover. We came expecting accommodation that was described as «deluxe…luxury…elegance» in a hotel «like no other hotel in the world» … the latter statement may well be true.
The hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful, but for $ 660 for 2 nights, including breakfast and dinner, we were expecting something a little more fresh and modern. The restaurant provided standard fare, not the «world class cuisine» described on the website.
A disappointing stay in a beautiful area…

I live in NYC and come here every once in awhile. I think this place is very unique and a really cool place to visit. The rooms are nice. The grotto is the highlight. An awesome underground pool and hot tub in a cave-​like environment. Unfortunately with the cave comes a bit of a moldy smell, but what can you do, it comes with the territory I suppose. Overall I would recommend this place.

I spent a long weekend with 5 colleagues from a law firm in NYC. We found the food to be excellent. Our biggest problem was to decide whether to have the same dish that we had enjoyed the previous night of try something new. So, each night we decided to order each of the entrees and share so as to not miss out on a new and great experience. The staff is as attentive and courteous as any fine restaurant in NYC. Very pleasantly surprised given our expectations for typical ski lodge cuisine.

I REALLY wanted to like this place-​and i do want to say that the people who work
in the restaurant, many are students on temporarly visas, but some are full time
employees, are great! Just great. And the grotto and pool are first rate, BUT
the rooms were terrible: old, scruffy, bathtubs not clean and i found bugs==
I dont know what kind of bugs, but not ants. I did not tell the management
because I was so distressed at having to move rooms, as mine was located OVER THE kitchen fan, though they insisted they did not know what the noise was.’ They knew and when my new room also had these bugs… I closed my eyes and
prayed…the Chef is very talented and the oatmeal at breakfast is first
rate and you should tip even though the breakfast is included because
the wait staff is not overpaid. But disappointing…

We visited the Scribner Hollow Lodge for the Hunter Mountain Jam on June 7 – 10, 2013. If you are looking for luxury accommodations. this is not the place for you. Scribner Hollow brings you an experience that includes friendly staff and retro Catskill amenities.
We thoroughly enjoyed the cave pool and hot tub in the basement. The rooms was spacious and the beds were comfortable enough. The wifi didn’t work well and the rooms could use some updating, especially the TVs.
The breakfast in the morning was decent, but lacked some basic ingredients you would expect like mushrooms and a variety of cheeses.
The event we attended at Hunter was supposed to provide a shuttle each day to the mountain and back, but was not reliable. This is no fault of the lodge, but they should consider providing their own shuttle for guests next year.
Overall, a great experience and I would stay again next year.

Me and my wife came here for New Years and had a blast. The Prospect is a great restaurant, (try the game duo or the duck), a hidden gem in one of New York’s more rural areas with an extensive wine list. Grotto is a cool area for late night drinks hot-​tubbing and dipping in the pool.

I selected 1 star because there’s no ½ or 0 star option.
Where do I begin…
This was my second stay at Scribner Hollow, and it’s my own fault for going back. For that I have no one to blame but myself — I knew better.
During my first visit to Scribner Hollow I was treated to moldy towels. This shouldn’t have been too surprising, mold grows well in dank places. The wifi was broken and wasn’t repaired during my 3 night stay. There are no PC’s for patrons to use (nothing resembling a business office but that’s OK, it’s a lodge not a hotel in a bustling city). Just make sure to bring your smartphone, it will quite possibly be the only way you can get online during your stay. I say that because THIS year the free wifi was up and working, if you were in a room that had a signal. I was not.
Bring bath-​sandals or flip-​flops if you plan on having a shower. I wouldn’t have stood in that bathtub barefoot for all the tea in China.
I requested extra coffee-​packets because the two they provided amounted to half a regular sized cup of coffee. You would have thought I was asking the employee at the front desk to give me their first born child.
This year I was told my room had a breathtaking view. It did — of the parking lot. What they «meant» was that if I left my room and went out onto the deck, I would have a breathtaking view.
The cost. $ 300 a night for a regular, normal, plain old (and I mean plain, and I really mean old) room. I understand that I’m staying at a peak time when rooms in the area are under high demand. I understand that businesses take advantage of these situations and raise the cost of a room per night. That makes sense. Supply and demand. Got it.
THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS A NIGHT to stay in what amounts to the type of Motel 6 that rents by the hour? And THEN act rudely towards me because I very politely asked for some more coffee? Sorry, that’s the straw that broke the camels back that got you this review.
If you can find a vacancy anywhere within 20 miles of Scriber Hollow, stay there instead.

I found this place off the hunter mountain website. It was approx 125 per person (total 3 guys) for the «jr suite» and with 2 meals per person included. This was the price during holiday season. While it’s close to Hunter Mountain, I would not walk it. It looks very bland on the outside but maybe it was just the weather. The front entrance is on the side near the parking lot and also very unassuming. Inside the main atrium was large but very vacuous. The jr suite was basically two beds and a pullout sofa which actually worked out well for the 3 of us. the beds did not have down comforters. I guess this would rate as a 2.5 star type hotel on priceline. it includes a small minifridge and a 27″ or so CRT television. there was a small coffeemaker and probably like 5 lamps for the room. heat is via a radiator that turned out to be very powerful. The included meals are at the restaurant inhouse. The staff was very attentive, but also there wasn’t much of a crowd. During peak seating, there was at most 15 customers in the dining area. The meal includes 4 courses: appetizer, simple salad, main course, dessert. I had the scallop and shrimp appetizer. Simple but well seasoned and cooked. It had some small chutney on it and that was pretty tasty. The simple salad was very simple and I’ll leave it at that. Entrée choices included flank steak, rib eye, chicken, sausage dishes, salmon, shark (!), duck, and ostrich. I opted for the ostrich because I have never tried it before. True to the waiters heads up, it did taste like red meat. It was very tender. The garnishes were just smashed potatoes and some steamed vegetables. The dessert choices were tiramisu, pecan pie or cheesecake. The cheesecake was good and a generous portion at that. Breakfast was simple but well done. My eggs over easy were cooked perfectly.
The gimmick to this lodge is that it has an indoor pool and hot tub in what they call «the grotto.» there is a water slide for the indoor pool but it was too cold to use. there is also a sauna. towels were available, but messy. this place had the potential to be fun, but didn’t have enough of a crowd to make it a social place.
overall — the room was a 2 – 2.5 out of 5 stars. the food was a ⁴⁄₅ (well cooked and with good variety). the atmosphere and social scene was a ¹⁄₅. I think its a decent value with the food included, but probably would try a different place in the area just for variety sake.
