Vinal Edge Records specializes in new and used music on both CD and LP. We offer Houston’s largest selection of new and used vinyl plus thousands of new and used CDs. Over 100,000 titles from older Classic Rock, Jazz, Blues, R&B and Country to newer Heavy Metal, Punk Rock, Indie Rock, Electronic and more. Our Avant-​Garde section is known worldwide, covering everything from Krautrock and Prog to Noise and Sound Collage.

Vinal Edge carries more than just music though. We have tons of music-​related posters, DVDs, books and magazines. We also stock needles for your turntable and other record accessories like sleeves and record cleaner.

We pride ourselves on our customer service and consider ourselves to be a full service record store. If we don’t have it, we’ll try our best to get it for you– NO additional charge for special orders. We also do record and cassette tape transfers to CD or MP3. And if you’re ever looking to sell, we’re Houston’s #1 buyer of used records!

History

Established in 1985.

Back in the early 80’s, Vinal Edge owner Chuck Roast was instrumental in bringing punk rock to Houston. He was the DJ of a popular punk rock radio show called Funhouse and booked punk rock shows around town. He began to buy extra tapes and records from one show to sell at the next. Soon, his backpack full of music required more room and Vinal Edge Records was born.

Since 1985, the store has seen it all: the rise of CDs, the death of cassettes, and now the improbable (and extremely exciting) resurrection of vinyl! Empty bins are no longer an issue as they were in the early days. In fact, since 2001, Vinal Edge has added 6 record bins, and reclaimed two more to accommodate all the vinyl the store has accumulated.

Vinal Edge now operates on four retail levels: classic brick and mortar, online mail order through its website, online as an Ama​zon​.com z-​shop, and through eBay auctions. Our backpack overfloweth.

A proper old-​school record shop with just the right vibe. Friendly and helpful employees and a wide selection. Other shops in town may have more selection, but I’ve found the prices here are consistently 5−10% lower than the others, which is a nice plus.

This was my first time in, so I am hoping for an improvement next time. There was only one other customer in the store when I walked in, but I wasn’t greeted by any of the three up at the front. That was a bit cold. I even had to say hi to one of the employees that walked by me later on. The only time I was acknowledged was when I got to the register with 4 records. I was happy with the prices on my Nick Waterhouse, Sinatra, Harry James, and Benny Goodman albums. Some of the new stuff looked a little high though. I would happily pay those prices if I felt that my business was appreciated. Maybe talking with customers can be a bigger priority than talking about viral internet pictures and videos? I hope so, because I like supporting local.

I love checking out independent CD and record stores, but this one didn’t quite hit the mark for me.
Pros: Location. Love West 19th Street. Such a good place to walk around sho.
Cons:
1. INCENSE? Really? Guaranteed way to give half your patrons’ headaches! (We only managed a couple of minutes inside and the ran outside for some fresh air!)
2. Pricey.

This place is good, not great. Primarily vinyl and nicely organized so it really helps. They will help find items and records for you if you ask. The big flaw here is just a lack of selection.

Best place to buy new and used records!!! Vinyl, cassette, or CD this place has everything you need. Sunshine, the girl with black glasses is really sweet and helpful. What can you expect with a name like Sunshine? Charlie the bearded maniac and Chuck the owner are two of the most knowledgeable music heads in Houston. They know their stuff!!! Come for the great events, classic records, and awesome staff. Vinal Edge is where it’s at !!!
Plus being on 19th street among so many great local businesses really sweetens the deal. Shopping in the Heights only gets better if you spend some time browsing through all the great old records. You never know what gems you may find!

The best record store in Houston, I assure you. If you have never been there, recommend you to visit it. There is a big variety of items. The workers are so knowledgeable that I do not know how they can remember so much information. I always buy CD’s there. I like the atmosphere in this place, there always plays a pleasant music. The prices are reasonable. I always have a good mood after visiting this store.

Best record store in town. Helpful, knowledgable staff. Inventory changes frequently (and they have «recent arrivals» section for used vinyl), the pricing is excellent, and they’re very fair about vinyl trade-​ins (I sell stuff there for credit on a weekly basis). Underrated!

Someone had been here before so I thought I would go to Vinal Edge-​went there on a weekday only 2 other customers in the store-​you have to dig into lots of boxes as they do have quite a inventory-​when you do this look out for the dust-​as its very cluttered-​was there about a hour neither the gentlemen sitting in the front or the girl with the black glasses came to acknowledge me or ask if I needed any assistance-​just about finished making my selections the girl with the black glasses came to me & yelled at me that I wasn’t handling the LP correctly (I was holding it with open hand on the edges) I advised her I knew what I was doing & she walked away-​so I go to make my purchase & advised the girl that customers pay your rent & it would be nice if you would be kinder to them-​she made no comment-​However the young man then chimed in-​that they just want the merchandise handled correctly I advised him how I was holding the LP correctly (I then wondered how he knew what had happened since he never left his stool in the front) spent $ 66.xx I normally let this stuff go & consider the source but after reading some of the other reviews this girl has some serious customer service problems with being rude !! I won’t be back

Vinal Edge is the best of the record stores that I’ve visited in the Houston area. Why? Variety; there are many different types of music available. Condition of the records for sale. Store organization; you don’t get lost or buried in their stock. Everything is clearly marked. They have a pretty solid punk/​hardcore section. I’ve purchased new and used albums by artists like Bikini Kill and Discharge. Most of the prices are reasonable. Moreover, the clerks at the counter are always friendly. I’m a middle age dude (who has embraced his inner 80 y/​o man) and I want nothing to do with pretentious hipsters. Oh yeah, and they have copies of Houston Press by the door. Dig it.

Absolutely one of the best and cheaper places in Houston to buy records. Has quite a selection of new wave and punk/​underground but really there is something for everyone. So far I’ve bought the following records from this place and have rarely been disappointed:

I wouldn’t sell your vinyl here. I went in there and was hurting for some money. he could tell that. Really ripped me off and low balled me. Due to my financial situation I really didn’t have much of a choice and had to accept. Was given $ 60 for roughly $ 300 worth of vinyl.

I stop by Vinal Edge about once a week to see what they recently got in. I usually leave with about 1 or 2 new records. Great place to look around and dig through the racks to find that missing gem.
Some of the newer records are a bit pricey at times but you can find an oldie for under $ 10 which is great!
Will continue picking up my records at Vinal Edge and adding to my personal collection.

This place was really neat! Especially if you are a vinyl record and hardcore music fan! The pricing is good on the old/​vintage vinyls! But my reason for 3 stars is that I think their newer albums are very pricey. I have seen brand new vinyl cheaper than at this place.
It is most def worth a looks see!

There aren’t enough words to describe how much I love this place. Vinal Edge is heaven on earth for music lovers. I feel like a kid in a candy store when I come here. First of all, their selection is AMAZING! They have thousands of records, CD’s and cassettes. I am blown away by the quality of music they have available. Also, the music they play in the store is awesome. The cherry on top of this place is the customer service! The employees are very nice and pleasant to talk to. Chuck, the owner, took his time to email me and let me know that they restocked two albums I had asked about weeks before. He didn’t have to email me, but he did and for that, I am extremely grateful… further proof that Vinal Edge is run by phenomenal people!

Fantastic record store! Great metal section. Tons of LP’s and CD’s. The staff is very knowledgable about about many different genres of music and products in the store. They also have some toys and collectibles.
Not a huge fan of the neighborhood it’s in, but it’s worth dealing with the hipsters to get at the good records.

Awesome record shop, being the vinyl aficionado that I am. We stumbled across this place looked for a classic hip hop record, and what did I find? OutKast Aquemini! score fa sure. Great record store here ladies and gents. The customer service could have been better but all in all, impressive.

I’ve been to this record store a handful of times and always end up leaving with goodies I’ve found. The people working the store are always personable and eager to assist you in your quest for new music.
The pricing is reasonable and you can always look it up on Amazon/​Discogs to see if you’re getting a good deal. I tend to fish through the unpriced/.99 cent bins and always find worthy treasures to take home… don’t disregard them! They also have a station where you can listen to the records before you purchase them which is convenient!

Best record store in town for the last 25+ years. Chuck is a gentleman and a scholar even if he does write unnecessary comments on the plastic sleeves of your LP’s. Essential! Also great selection, get a poster, get a tshirt a new stylus for your turn table, they seem to have it all. Plus if you’re need of good music they’ve always given me excellent suggestions.
