What a fun having a lunch at Velvet Taco! Cool service. Incredible velvet cake, which is really mind blowing! I love their outside seating area. It’s heaven if the day is sunny! When I drop in I always visit margarita shop, which is right next to it. Love it!

Disclaimer: The absolute most americanized tacos that can be acquired. I used the Favor App to deliver the chicken tikka masala taco, the brisket taco, the buffalo taco, and the corn cup. I have never been so blown away at how amazing and unique each taco tasted. You can tell the chef really worked hard to make sure each flavor lived up to it’s name. If you are a fan of Indian food the chicken tikka masala taco is an absolute must try! I also highly recommend the corn. It’s like mexican street corn but of course Americanized.

Hmm, a little too little for the price, at least to me. I’d prefer Torchy’s I got the mahi mahi(if I remember correctly) The queso wasn’t as good as I’d like. But of course I would compare everything to Torchys’ now. :P

The corn in a cup is to die for & it’s only $ 4! I usually get the tikka chicken taco also, which is also amazing! Restaurant is super clean, easy to find(right next to W Grill margaritas to-go drive thru) & such friendly staff :)

Not your typical Mexican tacos but very delicious! If you are looking for real Mexican tacos this is not the place but if you’re looking for a twist to your normal taco this is the place! The corn in the cup is fresh off the cob. My husband typically does not eat dessert, yet he ate all red velvet dessert! Will be going again soon.

The only time I ever visited this taco joint is between the hours of 1AM to 3AM as that’s the latest they are open on Fridays and Saturdays. I can’t say what’s the place is like during normal business hour but after hours is quite a place to be. It is definitely a place to be for people watching while enjoying some tacos, elote, and their velvet cake. First thing first, this is more of a gourmet taco place where the tacos are $ 2+ per taco but made with some of the higher quality ingredients than what taco trucks may use. Then there’s also the WTF(which stands for Weekly Taco Feature) as it’s a rotating menu for this one. I recently went here and got the karage chicken taco, a twist to the Japanese style fried chicken pieces and put into the taco. Of all the tacos I have gotten so far(minus the veggie ones), I have not had any bad tacos at all. It all depends on your mood for beef, chicken, pork, or I guess veggie taco. This place does serve beer but again, I usually come after 2AM so they can’t sell that anymore for the night but I would usually just get a cup for water because I really need to rehydrate myself. After you order your tacos, they will ask for your name so they can call for it on the PA system, so be sure to listen for your order as you have to pick it up yourself. There’s plenty of seatings inside and at the back patio. The food comes out fast and so far it hasn’t been too much of an error. I remember there’s one time where I ordered the Cuban style taco but I got something else and they told me that they ran out of ingredients so they just gave me another taco similar to it. I’ve mentioned earlier that it’s a great place for people watching especially between the hours of 1AM to 3AM, but I would also like to remind you to be aware of your own security. There will be drunks where they staggered and run into you, your table, or your chair. I mean, there is a police officer at the establishment if anything does escalate but still need to be a bit careful there just like anywhere else during that hour. This is definitely one of the places I will take my friends to for some after 12AM tacos to sober yourself up when I am on this side of town.

Disclaimer: if you’ve come here expecting«authentic» Mexican tacos or some sort of street taco/taqueria establishment, then this is the wrong place for you. I’m actually pretty tired of hearing people compare Velvet Taco to something it’s not. With that being said, this place is fantastic. If you could have some of your favorite dishes inside of a taco, then you’ve come to the right place; Burger? Buffalo Chicken? They’ve got ‘em! Service is great and fast. You order off of the wall menu and if you’ve been there several times(like myself), you already know what you want. Wide variety of choices. I prefer the Buffalo Chicken tacos. That is probably my favorite. I’ve tried the Ahi Poke, brisket, etc. The red curry coconut queso is a good starter! There are corn and flour tortilla options. If you’re like me, choose the corn. The tacos taste better with corn and it’s a *healthier* option. If you choose the corn cup as a side, prepare to have your tastebuds blown! So good. The only side I haven’t tried is the tater tot dish which has an egg on top. Hmm… Maybe next time… Dessert? YES. HELLYES. The Red Velvet cake is a must try. This is their only dessert… Did you catch the name reference? Yep. This is the only dessert they need. Cane sugar sodas, bottled sodas, draft beer and IPAs are also available for you thirsty heathens. Drink up. Inside seating is roomy and you can always find a spot. Want to enjoy the great outdoors? They have a nice, quaint patio spot outside. Enjoy your beer with some sunshine. All in all, give this place a go. It’s different, it’s tasty and priced well. I usually go in the evenings because I like a couple of tacos after my gym workout. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you liked this review, follow me, drop a comment below or just press one of those like buttons they’ve got going on below all this verbiage.

Been back several times since my first visit, so I owe Velvet Taco an update. The cold tortilla issues were resolved thank goodness. We order to go from here pretty regularly and my go to tacos are the chicken tikka and ahi tuna. The ahi tuna is served in a lettuce cup and they don’t skimp on the tuna or avocado. Highly recommend if you want something refreshing and healthier.

Honestly my favorite thing here was the velvet cake. I wasn’t a big fan of their tacos although it wasn’t with the way they made it or anything, it’s just the combination of things. I’m pretty picky and I think what I didn’t like was some sauce in each of the tacos. I ordered the bacon, egg frittata(#19) and the slow roasted angus brisket(#12). I thought the breakfast like taco would be better, especially with tots in it but it was sorta whatever. I liked the way the tortillas was in #12, and the meat was really juicy but I felt like there was way too much proportion wise compared to everything else in the taco. It wasn’t too pricey(~$ 10 for a meal) but as for tacos, its not what people hype it up to be. I prefer Keso’s or Taco joint in Austin or even Jalapeño Joe’s for regular tacos, and it’s cheaper! I guess I’m just one of the few individuals who don’t appreciate this place as much, but there’s definitely better for this price.

Ummmmm YUM! More than one person suggested I come here before my trip to Houston. And now I understand why. They have great taco options, chicken tikka masala, fried tofu, fried paneer and falafel. All soooooo good and filling. We ordered a bunch to share and well worth it. This place is unique and awesome. Wish we had one in DC. Prices are reasonable. Tables can get pretty full when it’s busy. So gooooood!

Yum. Finally made it to Velvet Taco and wasn’t disappointed. I was a little unsure of the queso, but it was fantastic. I’m a fan of blue corn chips so that made it even better. The tater tots looked way better than they tasted. The tots were good, but there was too much going on. And the fried egg seemed unnecessary. As for tacos, I got the buffalo chicken and Cuban. Both were equally great. Very generous sizing. Id almost want them to be slightly smaller.

I went there because of all the buzz about it. The service was good. I asked the lady at the counter what she recommended and she was happy to explain what everything was about. I asked how many should I get? She and the manager(I think) were honest & said people usually get 2. Then he gave me a free order or tots since that was my first time. Very nice! I’m giving it 3 stars because the food was not that great. I can’t remember what I had exactly but the meat was sort of dry and the salsas aren’t spicy and have this weird taste. I get that this is tacos with a twist & im open to trying new things but maybe it’s just the Mexican in me that’s always comparing everything to authentic tacos. Haha! I would give it another try. Not soon though

Tip: The Tikka Chicken is my go to! This place kicks Torchy’s ass by a mile! And its open till 4am. Food: We had the Bacon Egg, Roast Pork and Egg, Rotisserie Chicken, and Tikka Chicken. The Bacon Egg which had tator tots was my wifes favorite. I tried it and it was good. The Roast Pork was so tender! But my favorite had to be the Tikka Chicken. Of couse Im a big fan of indian food too. I didnt try the soft shell crab but its on my list next time. We also got the red velvet cake which was firm and moist and awesome with the caramel sauce. Place: Clean and casual. Open till 4am so the crowd varies from club folks to college crowd. Plenty of tables and bar seats along the walls. We were there at 11pm on Friday and there was no problem sitting. Parking may be a problem though. Service: Food came out quick. They call your name when its ready. The counter people were very friendly and helpful! Value: Tacos range from about $ 275 to $ 6.50 each. Soft shell crab is $ 6.50. The tacos are a good size. 2 will be satisfying so its a good value! Ill be back to try all 21 flavors + the special!

The first time I went to velvet taco was in Dallas and it was great so I had to try it when it opened in the heights. I had the chicken masala taco which does not disappoint. I also had the elote and that I loved! I wish the portion was bigger! I’ve also had the red velvet here and it’s amazing the butterscotch glaze on top really makes this dessert. Overall a great taco place. I love torchy’s but this is different and definitely just as tasty!

My husband myself and my 4 year old. We were driving looking for anything to eat so I checked Unilocal and saw some reviews which compares it to Torchys. I love Torchys so we have it a try. Parking wasn’t bad, you can park at Monarch Cleaners if the parking lot is full. And you have to make sure you don’t park At Jack in the box. There’s a towing sign. Walking it it very cramped and the order line is across the place, the main entrance is on Washington on the other side of the parking lot so I don’t assume a lot of people actually go through that door. We looked at the menu, and didn’t see. Kids menu so I just picked a frittata taco for my son. I went ahead and asked and the cashier when ordering and she replied that she did and gave me one from Behind the counter, which then I didn’t have time to reAlly look and there was a line so I didn’t wanna take long so I picked the first thing. There wasn’t any seating anywhere which had us walking around the place for a bit. We then found a table by the front entrance which were soaked wet and I had to go make 4 trips to dry the tables. We got called 3 times and it wasn’t ours even though they called our name And initial. You don’t get plates so it’s messy, the tikka was everywhere and it wasn’t impressive . We got a #12 slow roasted angus brisket and by the time I got to it it just fell apart and I had to use a fork. It’s a taco! I don’t want to use the fork! We also for chips and queso, Which we didn’t have enough chips for. And we got the corn«elote» which was pretty unauthentic… The food was good the experience wasn’t. I probably won’t be back. P.S there’s better margaritas next door! Margaritas to go!

3.5 stars. Velvet Taco boasts a series of good points, but my biggest rating standard is still taste. Here are my two cents: (Non food-related) Pros: +Interior Design(Funky colors, tall stools, thick wooden tables, classy gentrified look with graffiti accents… open patio in the back to take advantage of when the weather permits) +They have specialized taco trays! I appreciate this additional detail! +Hours of Operation(0400 on weekends, praise) +Drive-Through Margaritas next door(The establishment looks janky but trust me, they put out.) FOOD Well, there aren’t any outright cons about this place. They do fancy tacos — beef, pork, breakfast, vegetarian. Got the beef brisket which was a bit on the dry side, unfortunately, along with the paneer tofu. I really do appreciate Velvet Taco’s creativity! Their taco descriptions and flavors on the menu all sounded incredibly tasty. But upon actually ingesting their creations, I wasn’t terribly impressed. The tofu wasn’t really flavorful. My friends raved about their tater tots, but I honestly just felt they were normal tots with some average quality cheese sprinkled on top. Usually a fried egg will up the appeal, but in this case I wasn’t fooled! If I wanted something along those lines I’d rather hit up OhMyGogi! for some kimchi fries, to be very honest with you. Overall, Velvet Taco is nothing to complain about. It was a good meal. They offer a funky, fusion twist on the authentic Mexican taco. I just wasn’t converted to fan status.

Aaaaah tacos. If you live in Texas, you LOVE tacos. Even when you say you don’t, you still love tacos. And when you say you love tacos, you REALLY love tacos. Velvet Taco is a Dallas based Tacos restaurant. And as much as I love to trash everything Dallas(Mavericks, Cowboys, and even the Stars even though I don’t watch hockey), that is not the reason why I think Velvet Taco is just an average taco restaurant. I’ve been here a couple of times and both times I left without feeling too impressed. Every time I come in, I always make it a point to try more than just one taco so I could have some variety but every single time I do, usually one taco manages to make me go, «mmm, this is some goddang good taco!» while the rest leaves me feeling underwhelmed. The good thing about eating here is they load you up. They don’t skimp on the meat and the veggies. They also have what they call the WTF(Weekly Taco Feature) that, obviously, changes on a weekly basis. The bad things about eating here is the location. It’s on Washington so parking sucks! Yes, they do have a parking lot; but unless you come here super late night or super early, then good luck trying to find parking in the lot. Another bad thing about eating here is the fact that when it’s packed, you could be waiting forever for your tacos. The last time I was here, I came around 10:30 pm so it wasn’t too busy. I ordered three different tacos, but for whatever reason, I didn’t get my taco until around 15 minutes later. During this time, people that had ordered after I did actually got their tacos first. Why? I don’t know. But imagine the same scenario with 20 – 30 people waiting for their tacos. Yep, good luck! Pricing is pretty standard for gourmet taco, but obviously a lot higher than if you were to go somewhere like El Rey. Heck, sometimes I think El Rey is pretty high compared to some gas station taco or some tacos truck that you can find outside of Home Depot or something. But you do pay for the location and the ambiance. I don’t live close to here because I’m not one of the cool inner loopers. However, if you live pretty close to here, this could be a pretty good place just to hang out with friends and munching some tacos. Check it out for yourself.

I passed by this place a couple of times on Washington and had to stop in to try it. «Tacos» and the sign caught my attention. After looking up this place on Unilocal and seeing all the photos, it made me want to share this with my friends and family. As you think of gourmet tacos, this is where you can find some! They have a wide selection of different tacos. Who has ever heard of softshell crawfish or buffalo chicken in a taco? Choose from chicken, pork, beef, fish, eggs, or go vegan. Whatever floats your boat. They have sides and I will recommend the tots and eggs. It has goat cheese which you will notice the flavor immediately. Don’t forget about red velvet! Hence, that is in the name of the restaurant. It’s pretty sweet and the serving is pretty large. The tots alone are pretty filling, I’d say if you get the tots, pairing it with one taco is great. Going for two or more tacos will definitely be overfilling if you’re eating it all by yourself. I’m not judging though because you gotta feed that belly of yours! Overall, I loved the food I have eaten here. I will be returning to try the rest of their menu. They do serve beer and they have an area outside to dine if you’re feeling the weather. Advice: they do get packed during rush hours. I did park next door at the jack in the box even though there are signs that say«Jack in the box customer parking only» lol. There was nowhere else to park at the time.

There are taco spots everywhere in Houston. I’ve come back and instead of the taco trucks I used to go to being it, there are taco restaurants everywhere. Seems very trendy right now. Velvet taco does not disappoint. You get some eclectic and funky tacos to taste. Almost like playing with food flavors and putting them into a tortilla. I like it. Get in line, look at the menu, order your food, and they’ll bring it to you. Very efficient. It’s not fast food, but it’s not sit down and stay awhile food. They’re tacos! It’s a quicker meal. The tuna taco, which was a lettuce taco was AWESOME. It was the best of the tacos. It’s healthy(if you care about that), but more importantly you have a delightful combinations of ingredients, textures, and flavor. Get this one. Don’t be upset it’s not in a tortilla. Get over that. The other taco I had was annatto shredded pork. Shredded pork, pickled onion, grilled pineapple — those were my favorite flavors from the taco. Great combination of flavors again! The tacos are the stars of the show. Now I’m going backwards to talk about the sides. The elote is fine. You can get the best elote outside of a Fiesta supermarket anywhere else in town. Here the mayo wasn’t rich enough, not enough parm, more salt, and the secret is leaving a little bit of corn water. They don’t know this secret. Everyone was raving about the tator tots, but they’re not that spectacular. They’re good — because when isn’t a tator tot with bacon and cheese good, but as innovative as the ingredients sound… either the quality of them is off or they get lost. No two bites were the same.

I was so excited to try this place but I just don’t think it’s my cup of tea. I love Tacos, I love unique food, it seemed like a match made in heaven. Someone mention that this place is a better Torchy’s, well that makes sense to me because literally everything on the Torchy’s menu is spicy and I had the same experience here. We ordered the Shrimp & Grits, Brisket, Tikka and Buffalo Chicken. I expected a little spice from the Buffalo and Tikka ones, I like Buffalo sauce and I can handle some spice. Obviously, not loving super spicy food is a personal preference but too much heat equals lack of real flavour! With my eyes closed, the only way I could distinguish the Brisket from the Shrimp was because the textures are different. They both just tasted like spiciness. The only relief from the spice was the Tots which honestly set me over the edge. The food is very rich and then you put an Egg and some Bacon on Fried Tots and you’re like woah. My husband really love it because he likes lots of heat, I’d say if you like Torchy’s you’ll definitely like this place. They have very unique Tacos and they’re bigger than the Tacos at Torchy’s.
