This UYE hosted by Lou the Legend was a nice get together with 8 or 9 fellow Unilocalers to visit on a nice Sunday afternoon at Eatwell Bakery. We enjoyed nice snacks that Lou provided with the help of the bakery owner that allowed us to sample some of their wares. Some of us also bought some of our own food. I had a smoothie and chocolate covered cannoli that were both very good. Everything we ate was good. During our get together we ate food and drinks while sitting outside in the beautiful weather. Lou provided a wealth of knowledge about this bakery that included the owner coming out to talk to us and give a history of the restaurant and how he makes his food so authentic. In particular he told us about his yogurt which we also sampled. I don’t visit bakeries often however I will say that Eatwell really impressed me as a quality place to go if I ever need to. Also, kudos to Lou for putting this on. His preparation for UYE’s is nothing short of impressive. If you get a chance to go to one of his, I highly recommend it as you will be entertained and informed. He is an excellent planner.

It may seem as though I’ve been on Unilocal forever, I had yet to attend an event, official or otherwise. And when Lou C. Arranges an UYE at an absolutely ADORABLE little café right down the street from you on a sunday afternoon, how can you NOT attend? Eatwell Bakery and Café was the venue and since it was my first time attending an UYE and my first visit to this eatery, I was completely out of my element. But upon my fashionably late arrival, I was graciously greeted by Lou who gave me the rundown on the place and it’s specialties and introduced me to the early arrivals. And so the ordering began. From the roast beef sammie to the frittata, iced coffee to mango banana smoothie, oh yes I had it all. And by golly was it all delicious! And why wouldn’t it be? The owner has only been doing what he does for the better part of FOURDECADES! Finding this little bakery so close to the house is priceless, but what really made my day was meeting all the Elite Unilocalers and finally putting a face to the reviewers I trust! It truly was a pleasure talking to each and every one of them and bouncing around ideas for my own possible UYE. Fingers crossed. A very special shout out to Lou C. For making it all happen for us and for every single Unilocaler that drove across town to be here. Meeting y’all rocked! And Gail(hehehehehe), I tried looking for my transmission dipstick and I failed. I had to Google it lol!

Lou’s Uyes are a rare treat that only Houston Unilocalers are entitled to. These themed uyes have an excellent structure to it every time where you get to sample new food and learn about it. As was with the Taiwanese uye last time I had taken a liking to the Taiwanese sausages this time I was expecting bigger, better and gawd Iam so happy that I made it to this event inspire of my bad hangover. 3 hours well spent on a Sunday discussing with like minded people on your subject of interest. Eat well bakery is a small family establishment by a Lebanese couple who have been in business in Houston from the early 70s. They serve a taste of coastal Mediterranean with cuisine inspired from Lebanon, turkey, Italian and Greek. The foremost important thing Is how fresh the food was. Ziat the owner claims to have introduced hummus to Houston and there is no reason why one shouldn’t believe him. The hummus and yogurt sold here is so fresh and tasty that Iam thinking about driving al the way from Cypress to pick some in future. It is worth it. We had a good solid ten minutes talk from ziat on how he makes his hummus and yogurt everyday. Although he trashed most other methods of commercial preparation, you will see that he is sticking to the traditional methods of preparation. Now to the excellent fare. I reached on time at 130 and went ahead and ordered the yogurt drink sweetened with honey. The freshly prepared yogurt was light and the best treat for my hangover. I quickly followed it with the combo of hummus and falafel. Lou is a veteran shopper front his place so he got all recommendations. The hi light items of the day are. Cinnamon rolls. The best damn rolls I have had in my life. So light crisp and flavorful. I ended up eating 5 pieces. As Lou says it doesn’t have egg and it is not messy. Unarguably the best thing for me today. The pineapple mixed with Li hing. Hands down another favorite. Very common in Hawaii Iam going hunting for Li hing soon. Ziat was more than generous to us constantly spoiling us with fresh hummus yogurt, mini cannolis, with whipped cream as fresh and light as straight from the udder. The wraps, The almond cookies the chocolate ball cake and the apricot pastry were great too but I would not place them in the hall of fame next to the cinnamon rolls and hummus and yogurt. The best part of the event was the amount of knowledge we got from ziat in the food cuisine his sourcing and yes well our master food yoda Lou. Definitely a gem of a uye.

It’s just something about Lou’s UYE that I’m loving so much, I’m guessing it’s because the wide variety of sampling I receive when I’m around Lou or it could be by the fact that he’s so calm and welcoming that you wouldn’t really expect any pressure from him. This event was a lot different than the rest of his unofficial Unilocal events because it wasn’t Asian based nor was it within the Bellaire area. The area that Lou chose wasn’t any closer to my area, but it isn’t gonna be because it’s his event, not mines. I drove 45 minutes from South Houston/Clear Lake area to attend this event and let me tell ya what. this event was the bomb-diggity!!! Most definitely, you got yourself a few fellow Unilocalers gathered around with delicious food to sample, good conservation, and also Unilocal spirit as what we are all known for. The restaurant or bakery was neat-oh, you can tell from the interior that these owners know what they are doing when they combine fresh ingredients and absolutely nothing processed. That was a shocker for me since I’m not used to that, but I wasn’t complaining! Now the food to sample: it was more like a buffet line to me. We had Li Hing pineapple covered in plum spices and wow it was sweet and super tasty. I enjoyed the taste lots as I couldn’t stop eating it. The house made, home made hummus was on point good too. I don’t even like hummus nor do I eat it, but wow, this was shut yo mouth good! I could honestly taste the freshness in the hummus that I didn’t taste in other hummuses in the past. The light lemony taste with the beans and chickpeas. I’d gotta say, deliciouso! The cannoli’s were fairly OK tasting for me as I expecting them to taste sweeter, but I wasn’t at all disappointed. The apricot pastry was yummy. Also, the pita bread/chips with the house made hot sauce or salsa was unique because you can tell that these owners really care what you put in your mouth. These owners don’t just make food for the profit, but instead they do it because they care. The ingredients that they used are amazing; no msg, all natural and not just saying these adjectives to make it seem better, these owners, Ziad and his wife are Lebanese and sticks to what they know from past generations which is nice and made from scratch. Not a lot of restaurants or even people cook that way nowadays. When I ordered my papaya-banana smoothie with some freshly made plain yogurt and a hint of honey. The owners were telling me about how their smoothies are much better than other restaurants since they use fresh fruit, not frozen. That’s a big difference. Plus, with the yoghurt and honey. I sampled the yogurt and smoothie, I was hooked on phonics with deliciousness. Now, I gotta give it to you Lou. This event was outstanding unique. The history, authenticity, and fresh food really tied this event together. Thank you Lou for planning this event and hosting it. You are ambitious with what you do and I love coming out to your UYE’s even if the drive is pretty steep for most people. Another thing, I got to chit chat with Tracey from Austin, TX. I haven’t seen her since the past year. It’s always nice to see Depp. New Unilocalers to me: Olivia and her man, Nancy, Tim, «AK47»: Afkham, and another Maria. Good people! And of course, Lou.
