Class of 2011 representing! I can’t express enough how much my education here has transformed my life, and vaulted me into the career I have today. The campus has come a long way since I attended, they now have a new welcome center, the rail expansion is completed, and they even added a little character with the murals. Glad to see the school get a nice much needed face lift!
If you were like me a few years back, you’re probably wondering if you should go here or to the main campus. You’ll hear your peers saying how you’re better off going to main and more likely to find a job. Well I can tell you from personal experience, it doesn’t matter. Both schools are equally accredited, and both have a good reputation with employers (especially in Houston). If you’re paying out of your own pocket or even if you’re not (you’ll have more of a refund each semester), I’d suggest coming here if you’re okay with the less than traditional college life (dorms, frats, etc.).

I really enjoyed this school. I was first enrolled at the University of Houston straight out of high school and boy was that a mistake. I was not prepared for the huge auditorium classrooms and the lack of one-​on-​one with the professors. No surprise, I didn’t do as well I should have so I opted to try out some classes at HCC. Here I got smaller, more personable classes but the professors seemed to care about as much as the professor’s at U of H which was not much at all. After wasting a lot of time trying to figure out what to do there, I finally enrolled at UHD. What can I say? The classes were small enough so that I actually knew the name of the people who would sit next to me and the professor’s actually engaged the class in meaningful conversation related to the class’ subject. I felt like what i had to say actually mattered and my motivation to do well which I lacked at UH came back along with a sense of comfort that I could ask questions that my professor’s would answer and explain to me which I lacked at HCC. I came to UHD with the sole purpose of graduating. 3 semesters later, I am in my last week of classes and ready to get my bachelor’s. If UHD had what I needed to further my education (getting a master’s in library sciences) I would definitely take it here. I even made the dean’s list last semester! Best college experience I have had!

After spending a semester here, I realize UHD is great but the liberal propaganda spewed all over the newspaper, walls, and staff make this place much less enjoyable.

Attending UHD to receive my Bachelors in Criminal Justice. Since i have began attending, I have met awesome friends and professors who truly care for the students. The staff all around the building are knowledgeable in the department they work in and will help you the best way they can. I have never had any bad experiences at this campus and hope it continues to be an awesome University.
*Incoming freshmen/​transfers: Spaghetti Warehouse next door will get addicting… limit to once a week! Lol!!!

Great and affordable University. I graduated the fall 2014 with my bachelor’s in Criminal Justice and minor in psychology. The University has been nothing but good to me. Met great people during my school years and I was even employed full time after being a student worker for the Library Department.
Without doubt, a place where you can find your «major opportunity».

Came here to take a test, this place is like a maze, going thru hallways and elevators and rooms and such.

I freaking love this college! Amazing professors, staff and students. The campus to me feels safe and the amabiance is very nice. I love taking metro down there. I love how something is always going on in the campus. The sizes of classes are small to medium. I miss uhd a lot

It’s great facility and my gym while away from home. The fitness center, well-​staffed by faculty and students, boasts basketball courts and exercise rooms on the bottom floor with cardio and strength machines and free-​weights upstairs. The staff is ready to offer fitness and nutrition advice and encouragement. UHD has a very fine fitness facility with outstanding leadership and management. I highly recommend it.

The University of Houston Downtown is a pretty decent place to study.
There are a good variety of degree programs available. The class sizes are small. The student body is one of the most diverse in the country and the tuition is reasonable.
Parking is a little bit of an issue. But that’s probably not news to anyone trying to park anywhere in downtown Houston!

Great university with excellent professors that DO have PhD’s (contrary to popular belief). This is also a 4-​yr accredited university although most people somehow want to confuse it with Lone Star College and HCC!

It can be good or bad. It is not a traditional school per se. Most of the students are late 20’s mid 30’s and already have successful careers. The career services department is not very good, also most of the university center counselors are bad. The major declared counselors are very good though. The professors are all over the place, and yes the do teach at surrounding universities. The education is, however, what you make of it. If you truly want a learning experience, you can definitely get it. Conversely, if you just want to coast you could probably get through doing take home tests and getting curves. Although, I am probably not like the average student. The average class size is less than 20. During the day, some of the classes are less than 10. It is no longer open admission, which will help clear some riff raff aka 1^st year dropouts.

Contrary to what people think about this school (a slacker version of main campus). I don’t think that this is true at all. As a natural science major, I find the courses challenging, useful, and guess what… Educational. Small classes where you can actually pay attention. Most of the professors have their phDs and the labs are taught by professors who have phDs as well. Main campus labs are taught by teaching assistants (mostly grad students). It’s true that your degree may not be worth quite as much as one from main campus, but hey, it’s just a piece of paper in the end. I feel like I am getting a good education at a fraction of the cost.
And hey, having access to the rail is pretty nice as well; downtown is your foodcourt.

Interesting campus right in the heart of Houston’s downtown. Kind of sketchy area but the school is surprisingly nice.

I’m not your «typical college student» that hangs around campus or anything, but I’ve had a pretty okay experience.
Recently started attending this Fall and used to attend the University of Houston Main Campus prior. Obviously it’s nothing in comparison, but it does have its perks. Flexible hours for classes, professors are knowledgeable (
helped a lot), administration is… «okay» if you just want to get things done and know exactly what to ask. They’re not the most helpful as most of them are young and probably just there part time to help pay bills. What I’m trying to get at is that most university administrative employees are gung-​ho about working there.
Anyway, right now there is a LOT of construction and the parking is all over the place. A lot of walking from building to building, but a little cardio every day is a plus. The mix of students is not what I’d say would be a competitive environment, but I guess that’s not my problem.
Probably going to transfer back to UH Main Campus to finish my degree in Accounting.

Financial Aid department is WORTHLESS! Negative attitude, rude, helpless, and stupid!!!

I have been going to UHD for almost two years now after transferring from SJCN.
I never had a problem. All the professors I had are always so helpful and easy to talk to. I guess you just sometimes have to do your research to have wonderful professors to make your moneys worth. I am currently trying to finish my bachelors in Generalist and I must say everything seems to be so smooth. My counselors and advisers had always been so helpful so I have no complaints. I have about a year left and I am excited to finish! I am actually thinking of going back to school to get into their master’s program. They have a wonderful staff and all the professors in the Urban Education are very helpful!

I once considered transferring to UofH to complete my degree but the Student Services, Professors, great friends made and overall experience I have had thus far at UHD has changed my mind about leaving! Yea, UH gets all the love but the level of attention given to the students of UHD far surpasses that of UH.
Not to mention, UHD has come a LONG way! The UHD of the past (anywhere up to 5 years ago) is NOT the UHD of today. The ‘university experience’ it once lacked is now alive and well at UHD.
Take a gander at the view of the Downtown skyline from the 3^rd floor deck. Take the Rail (located directly in front of campus) to the Museum district, Ensemble theatre, eateries… or my favorite; bar hopping for happy hour downtown. Ride the newly constructed bike paths leading directly to UHD winding along Allen Parkway /​Buffalo Bayou & into Downtown. These are just a few of the outside perks of being a Gator.

School is what you make out of it. They can only teach the material and its up to you to get what you want from it

Received my BBA in Finance from UH-​D. I can’t speak on the other programs there but the finance program is great. The majority of the professors are amazing and are extremely knowledgeable in the subject. They incorporate both real world scenarios with book knowledge. Many of the professors also teach at surrounding universities — UH Central, Rice and St Thomas to name a few. If you build a repoire with them, they not only help you while in the program but are very supportive after you graduate. I’ve had professors help me with reference letters for grad school and one even help me with information on possible PHD programs.
The education I gained at UH-​D helped me get a better understanding and correlation of finance which has helped me at work as a Financial Analyst. It also helped me be better prepared for Graduate School.
I think the UH system overall is great. For me UH-​D was more convenient (when I started, I was working in Downtown) and the scheduling allowed me to finish at a faster pace.
