History

Established in 1886.

The YMCA began in rented quarters on Main Street in 1886. In 1907, the Y moved to its first permanent home at the corner of Fannin and McKinney. It was this site where the YMCA was housed for the next 34 years. From this location the YMCA taught thousands of Houston boys to swim, provided dormitory housing for young men coming to Houston to seek fortune, began formal adult education, and founded South Texas Junior College and South Texas School of Law. The YMCA also began serving young men in the military that traveled through Houston.

The YMCA story in the greater Houston area is one of legendary service to a countless number of families served over many generations. They came by the hundreds of thousands, and nearly 120 years later the YMCA of the Greater Houston Area is serving more than 500,000 boys and girls, men and women each year from hundreds of sites. The YMCA will continue to grow and serve Houston’s diverse communities for generations to come.

Huge facility! I was so surprised when I came. They have a rocking climbing gym for the youthzone and so many fun activities for the kids in The Child Watch area.
I took one class here looking forward to trying more classes here — the young instructor Timokyo (think is how you spell her name) is really funny.
The workout room is also HUGE. They even have a woman’s only workout area, which is great. There are separate group exercise rooms for specific work out classes.
They also separate the lap pool and rec pool away from each other which is a good and bad thing for certain people.
There is a lot of members during the afternoon Time. I haven’t had to deal with any customer service issues yet, so I can’t speak on their member services department.
It’s a good facility so far and can’t wait to go here more often.

I like the pool. It’s open winter or no winter. Plus also they have a rock wall, state of the art workout area. It’s basically a country club without being a country club or the pricy membership. Also they have a restaurant inside. It serves healthy food I think. Get the hummus and pita bread. It’s good!

Overall I think this is a good Y, but there are just a couple of small things that make me not like it as much as I can. 3.5 stars, but not quite enough to bump up to 4.
First off: maybe it’s because I don’t frequent this Y, but it’s kinda stinky in here. Like, all the sweat and funk has accumulated all these years and lingers in the air, but hey… puts hair on the chest, I suppose.
Second, the actual facility is pretty large, but most of the equipment is kind of smashed together in close quarters, even though there isn’t a whole lot of stuff to use. It’s not particularly claustrophobia-​inducing, but just be wary of personal space.
Finally, the equipment is on the old side — weights still use the old-​school clamps, things are kind of rusting, and so on. I do think they add character to the gym, though!
Things I do like: OUTDOOR POOL, towel service, jacuzzi. This gym is perfect for summer simply for those 3 reasons.
If you’re in the neighborhood, this Y is a pretty darn good choice! Definitely ask to take a tour to see if you’re keen on the facility, though.

Nice facility but it is very crowded. The group exercise instructors are variable. Michelle is one to avoid unless you like intense, demanding and impatient instructors. The kiddy pool with slide is great for little ones.

We started last week! And i just LOVE Trotter YMCA!
The place is big, lots of classes and options if you go 6, 7 pm the’re not full of people like 24 hours or LA fitness… I never had to wait to use any equipments on the afternoon, I love woman area… I didn’t try the swimming pool yet but I can tell I’ll love it!
So far so good!

I love this place. I travel — a lot. I always find a gym for a work out when I am on the road. At home I belong to the YMCA, because it is so close to our home. While traveling to Houston, I decided to try this Y.
The people are unbelievably helpful. I was able to use the Y as a visiting member, so no additional charge.
The weight equipment is decent, the aerobic equipment fantastic. They have a great pool, outdoor track, courts, etc. They also have towels… which is not always true, even for a Y.
I have visiting Y privileges in Texas, California, Georgia, and Washington. The Trotter Y ranks right at the top.

I’m a bit bias because I’m a trainer here and my coworkers are more like family than staff.
There’s a lot of things going on behind the scenes that keep this place up and running that members don’t see.
If the staff says good morning to you with a smile it’s genuine and not scripted. This is a great place to work as well as workout.

I’ve been a member of the Y for almost two years and I love every minute of it. The staff is helpful, friendly, and generally good people. The equipment just got updated so everything is top-​notch. You get access to tons of classes with your membership which is awesome, too.
There are youth programs, a café and restaurant, mini water park, boot camps, and a secure parking garage.
The best part is Dan Dan, the Towel Man, who greets you everyday with a bright smile and a fresh towel.
Some people squirm at the thought of group locker rooms, but I’ve met some amazingly sweet people who I look forward to seeing every morning. The showers are well kept and private. Plus there’s a whirl pool in the lady’s room and a sauna in the men’s. AND if you’re a lady and you want some additionally privacy, there’s a separate women’s workout room that’s away from the more open workout area.
Overall, I love this YMCA and I look forward to visiting it every day.

Been a member here for over a year now — it has been an awesome experience ! Great facilities and a great staff.
I generally frequent the weights room but they also have two racket ball courts, two tennis courts, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, a small outer running track and a bunch of group classes. There are also ample TVs here — so you can work out while watching the rockets or Texans.
Finally there is a cafeteria — I have tried it on a few occasions after my workout and its pretty good. Overall it’s definitely one of the top gyms that I have been a member of.

The Trotter Family YMCA is the place to BE! THe staff is great and the facility is nice. The group exercise class schedule is one of the best in the city with awesome instructors. I also love being able to get breakfast, lunch, or dinner downstairs!

I’m a member at the Tellepsen YMCA downtown but I’ll come here if I want to work out late at night because this gym closes one hour later than Tellepsen. This gym closes at 11 Monday through Thursday, 9 on Friday, and 7 on Saturday and Sunday.
My favorite instructor is Terry! He teaches BodyPump at 4 and RPM at 5 on Sunday. He has a lot of energy and motivates you to get the most out of your workout. I don’t like the BodyPump weights at this gym because I’m used to the weights at Tellepsen. The group exercise classes are on the first floor, the entrance is on the second floor, and the exercise equipment is on the third floor. There is also a lap pool and a leisure pool with a slide outside. This gym is bigger than Tellepsen but I prefer Tellepsen because it’s newer.

My daughter has been going to the after school and summer camp programs for about 6 years.
They can get a bit pricey but the YMCA has ‘scholarships’ that knock off quite a bit from the total– you just have to see if you qualify.
The counselors here are all cool and my daughter loves it. They go on a lot of field trips in the summer and so far they haven’t misplaced my kid so they get 4 stars.

This is definitely one of the nicest YMCA’s I have been to. It is very clean, large, and they provide towels. They offer all of the Les Mills classes like Body Pump, Body Combat, etc. The classes are well done and at convenient times.

I love this YMCA! They have so many fitness options that it’s almost overwhelming… in a good way! They have every type of fitness class that you could possibly want and the instructors are incredibly dedicated and talented! They also have the best fitness equipment on the market!

Living in Missouri City, it’s a pretty far trek to get to Trotter. I go once a week, (sometimes two, depending on how willing I am to make the trip). I love this YMCA!
One of my favourite parts of this gym is the café — It’s a fab idea! Exercise, eat healthy (and reasonably priced) so you don’t hit up Taco Bell or some fast food place on the way home!
There’s ample parking (in the multi-​story), the staff are friendly, they provide towels, have a great café and they are the only YMCA in the Greater Houston area, to offer all 10 Les Mills programmes.
I do the CX/​Body Attack classes with Sally/​Jenni and they’re both great instructors. Full of energy, motivation, inspiration and encouragement! A great team!
If I lived closer, this would be my go-​to YMCA!
