General Academic offers One-​to-​One In-​Home tutoring and classroom based services in all academic subjects ranging from 1^st grade grammar to astrophysics and Mandarin.

Our Study Lounge in the Rice Village is a lively, coffee-​house like environment where students can come in without an appointment and benefit from the help of our outstanding tutors.

We offer a comprehensive set of test prep courses at the Study Lounge including SAT, ACT, ISEE, and HSPT. Over the summer we also offer enrichment courses such as robotics, Mandarin, and physics.

History

Established in 2003.

General Academic’s history is one of young adulthood and the continual pursuit of the next adventure.

High school friends Shelby Joe and Rahul Gupta incorporated General Academic on August 11, 2003, in Jackson, Mississippi just a few weeks before leaving for their freshmen years at Rice University in Houston and Emory University in Atlanta. In founding the new company, the two friends were looking for an adventure and a way to improve their new communities. They wrote in their original business plan that they intended to make «knowledge truly without boundaries.»

Business Owner

A Mississippi native, Shelby Joe founded General Academic in 2003, two weeks before matriculating at Rice University. At Rice, he majored in political science and managerial studies while also studying abroad in both China and Germany. After not quite two years working as a management consultant, he turned his attention full time toward making General Academic the best company possible.
