Suchu Dance is a 501©3 nonprofit organization.
The keepers of the flame of modern dance in Houston for the past decade, Suchu Dance produces marvelous, quirky, enigmatic dance works that engage on emotional, psychological and narrative levels. Artistic director Jennifer Wood brings theatricality to every movement with color, contrast and sound. For modern dance neophytes, Suchu Dance’s performances are the perfect introduction to what the medium can truly offer.
Having successfully operated a traditional performance space — Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex — for 12 years, Suchu now strives to explore a greater range of performative possibilities in an effort to re-contextualize traditional ideas about dance and art spaces.
In it’s new space, Suchu Dance will be offering Artist in Residencies, Adult and Youth Movement Classes and Non Performances classes such as Costume Making, Set, Stage & Sound Design.
History
Established in 1998.
Suchu Inc, a 501©3 tax exempt nonprofit organization is the parent company to Suchu Dance. Founded by executive and artistic director Jennifer Wood in 1998, Suchu Dance is a postmodern dance/theater performing group that has been producing strange, artsy, combustible, humorous work since 1998. Suchu Dance was voted «The Best Dance Company –2005» by The Houston Press.
Deeply rooted in Houston, Suchu Dance founded three distinct performing venues in Houston over its history: the Duplex Center for the Arts in Montrose, Barnevelder Movement Arts Center in Downtown, and its new home, Suchu Dance, in Garden Oaks.
Suchu Dance will open the door to it’s self titled home, Suchu Dance in February 2014. Suchu Dance’s self-titled new headquarters is no stranger to dance; it previously housed the Houston JazzBallet Company directed by Patsy Swayze. It’s the same studio space where her son and most famous pupil, Patrick Swayze, learned the skills that would make him famous in Dirty Dancing.
