Most of the food here is done wrong, but there’s one thing I always get. The baked potato with beef. It’s just good and the cheapest item there without being unfulfilling. I’d eat it again, but only that. Since I never have cravings for baked potatoes, I generally stay away.

I presented the question«one star or two» to our family as we were finishing. My husband said«two» because he liked his grilled chicken plate okay, though overcooked. My 17 year old said«one» based on the fact that he didn’t like his burger and couldn’t eat his fries. He had big eyes when he said, «And if *I* couldn’t eat them…» I would say«one» because my combo fajitas were just okay. The rice was crunchy it was so burnt, the beef was charcoal tasting it was so burnt, and I agree with a previous reviewer about the melted sour cream. Pros about the place: it is CLEAN! But I wouldn’t come back because the food ranged between mediocre and plain bad.

The last time I dined at Skeeter’s Mesquite Grill was over five years ago at their 290 location. I’m sure I liked their food, but I couldn’t remember what I liked about it. I took a trip to their Gulfgate location two weeks ago since my taste buds had amnesia of the their last visit. I visited in the middle of the afternoon and it was nearly empty. There were maybe 6 people eating in an area that’s pretty big. Regardless, I was there and I wasn’t going to drive elsewhere to find some place different to try. To order, you have to walk up to counter and place your order. After ordering, you’ll receive your receipt with your order number and wait for your number to be called. The wait wasn’t so bad and had I had my little cousins with me, they would love that you can write and draw on the«table cloth»(a big sheet of brown paper lining the tables). My order, chicken fajitas with rice and beans, and a margarita was ready. I was stoked about the platter, the plate sizzled for over five minutes straight(no lie). The food was surprisingly good with the exception of the rice. The Spanish/Mexican rice was beyond bland. Besides the rice, I have only two complaints. I think they should include the little taco shell that contains the sour cream, pico de gallo, and guacamole should be on the side. The food was hot of the grill(in case you didn’t gather that from the five minutes plus of sizzling) and because of that, the sour cream melted before I got to use most of it. It’s not a big thing the shell can be moved onto another plate. The second complaint, a weak margarita. Their margaritas are made in a blending machine, so it’s already pre-made. Mine wasn’t as strong as I thought it would be. Still a great buy for $ 2. Did I mention it’s $ 2 all day, everyday? I think Skeeter’s is underrated and more people should try eating there. If you happen to be on those people who haven’t tried it, I encourage you to join their e-club. Just for joining, you’ll receive a coupon for a free entrée(no purchase necessary and no catch).

This is a place that’s always good for some tasty food, at a good price and that doesn’t take too long. Always go for the chips and queso, one of my favorites since I was a kid going to the West U. location. The burgers are good and I recently tried the chicken tacos, which were excellent! and you can’t beat free refills!

My hubbie and I flew into Houston to see some friends this weekend and wanted to get a bite for lunch. Being unfamiliar to the area, I don’t know how we ended up at Skeeters, but it seemed pretty good. I ordered a fajita and it was very tasty. The prices seemed pretty reasonable as well!

I’ve always been skeptical of this place only b/c it’s a chain(though they insist that it isn’t … check out their webbie) and almost all of the Skeeter’s are located in a shopping center. But, when you’re hungry and your friend’s paying, it’s best to keep your mouth shut. And thank goodness I did. If you’re from the ‘burbs and are familiar with the yummy diner/Tex-Mex goodness and hospitality offered up at Sweet Mesquite, then you’ll love Skeeter’s. It has that right-by-the-border feel to it: vintage Coca-Cola ice chest filled with Mexican beer, colorful walls, the smell of fajitas a la parillada. But they do have more on the menu, including chicken tenders(what I ordered) served with crispy fries and Texas toast, burgers and the like. They don’t have a full-bar, but their Margarita machine comes close. What made me smile and entertained me for the short time we waited for our grub are the butcher paper-covered tables with crayons. I relived my HS days where doodling and making signs for friends was the way of life.
