Montrose Chinese Restaurant

I have ordered from here multiple times. I’ve never had any real issues. I get the spicy chicken and broccoli. Its comes in a nice spicy brown sauce. Good portion sizes too. Other than the Curt phone etiquette the food is good and delivery has either been on time or early.

I love Montrose Chinese. I’m not sure why it has an average rating as low as it does. The food is always fresh (broccoli always bright green and crisp rather than overcooked), the place is very clean, the prices are incredibly low, portions are generous, staff is very courteous, their online ordering system is legit and accurate, and my experience is always consistent. Most importantly, I find the food to be very good and I prefer it to more expensive places in the neighborhood, which I’ve found to lack flavor or to be excessively greasy. No complaints, only praises for Montrose Chinese. I don’t even go in that often yet they still know me by name. #winning

Their food is perfect for a comfort chinese fix. I got the exact quality I expected with quick service using the online ordering option. No need to call in and try to translate your order.
I love how they have combo plates outside of lunch time for under $ 10. Hard to beat that! The parking lot can get a little packed so ordering delivery might be the best option if you want to avoid parking hassles.
My General Tso’s chicken was mostly sweet with a little spice and the pieces of chicken are so big I could get 4 bites out of each one. Definitely enough for dinner and lunch the next day. I really liked the egg roll, it was the thin phyllo type wrapper instead of the thick chewy wrapper that some places use for both their cheese puffs and rolls.
I will be back again, probably for a more spicy dish. If you like spice I recommend you ask them to turn it up a bit as they have taken out the spice and «Americanized» the sauces. Also, don’t expect too much greenery in their food. This is a thick, heavy, and fried menu. Don’t come here for fresh light eats but do come for a stick to your ribs warm meal.

I do not recommend this restaurant.

I love the ease of ordering from Montrose Chinese. We order from their website and get it delivered within 20 min or less. They are always quick to deliver! The general tso combo is a go to of mine.

I don’t even enjoy having to give them a 1 when I feel they deserve less. The food was awful. I ordered the general tsos plate which is the most eaten dish at all Chinese places and it sucked. Huge chunks of chicken that were chewy and felt like a sponge in your mouth. The fried rice had no greens and the plate didn’t even come with broccoli. The cheese puff was barely decent and the egg roll was the only thing worth touching.
The food was worse than grabbing Chinese food from a gas station. I just want my money back.

I gave them an extra star because delivery was quick and that’s probably why the food was incredibly inedible. My entire meal tasted like cardboard swimming in a trashy swamp.

The food is a bit subpar but I still found myself ordering for pick up due to it being a short walk from my house. That said, I don’t think I’ll be returning but incase your thinking about trying this place out, keep the following in mind.
Don’t even consider dining in because the shabby, sparsely furnished interior provides all the warmth of an office kitchen. Not to mention you wouldn’t have anywhere to sit as what few tables this place has are typically filled with employee family members playing on laptops or drawing pictures. In short, this place is pretty much pick up or delivery.
I wouldn’t say the food is bad, but I’ve certainly had better. Of course when you order several items off the menu and they tell you it will be ready in 5 minutes, what can you expect. On the one hand it’s great for when you’re really hungry as its ready in minutes but on the other, you have to be pretty hungry to want to eat it.
If the sub par dishes and lack of a dine in option don’t dissuade you, there’s also the added bonus of extremely rude employees. Don’t bother asking for an extra packet of mustard unless getting yelled at is your thing. Expect any interaction with the employees working the register to be short, curt, and lacking any warmth. It’s almost as if they’re constantly stressed out, over worked and angry.
If your considering this place your best bet is to take your business elsewhere as there are a ton of other better tasting and more pleasant options.

After all the negative reviews, I was reluctant to order from this place. But I decided to try the online ordering option, and my food was here practically before I hit «send», and exactly as I ordered it, with my special options.
The driver must have been cooking it in his car, lol, because it arrived really fast. Tasty too. Thanks, will order again!

Pretty much what you would expect. Nothing amazing per se, but always dependable.
My main issue is their online ordering system. I feel like it’s always hit or miss. If you feel the need to write a note (ie: asking for brown rice), understand that it might not happen. If you can get past that, you’ll be alright.
Other that that, incredibly fast delivery. There’s been days where I get my food within twenty minutes. Excellent for hangovers or those times when you just need to eat unhealthy and eat unhealthy now.

Absolutely awful. I am sorry, but for such a basic order of sweet and sour chicken, orange chicken, egg rolls and fried dumplings. The taste was off, like rotten meat. The sauces had no flavor and the egg roll was fishy and sour tasting. Strike yet another place off the list. Is there not a single good take out in Houston?

Excellent food. Easy online ordering. They are super quick and super friendly. 5 stars, because it’s just no nonsense.

This place gets NO stars… food is mediocre but since they deliver I have ordered several times… this time was the LAST… took over 2 hours to deliver, when I called to check on the order the phone rang for 3 minutes straight, then someone finally answered and just put the phone down on the counter… I was livid… I had to have a friend call from their phone to get an answer and check on my order! DO NOT ORDER AND PAY AHEAD!!!

Ordered through Eat24, which normally I have a wonderful experience with. My estimated delivery time was 45 minutes. At the hour mark I called the restaurant twice wanting to know an ETA (the first phone call just rang and rang with no one picking up). When someone finally picked up, I was barked at that my order was still in the kitchen and it would be an hour to an hour and a half for my food. I said it had already been an hour so it should be on its way, right? And again was barked at that the delivery time was an hour to an hour and a half. I was then hung up on.
I understand when it’s raining outside that delivery joints get busy, but come on. At least do the courtesy of calling and saying hey it’s gonna be late I’m so sorry. Do not bark at customers that have already paid you. I want my money back. Terrible service. Never returning.

This the tastiest Chinese takeout I’ve had in years. We ordered spring rolls, two kinds of egg foo young, and some shrimp hunan style, and noodles and soups. Every single dish was spot on in flavor, texture, and quality. I was so impressed, and so was my husband. they are timely and friendly, and I know we will have a good meal anytime we order.

If ordering something from this place for «delivery» be sure that you don’t live in an apartment that has multiple access points.
My building has entrances through the garage with several call boxes as well as a desk with concierge which could allow access inside. The driver had instructions to check in with the desk but insisted on calling me directly. I gave instructions to either go to the office or call the call box to check in at which point i was given the most absurd response — «I have another delivery and that takes too much of my time.» This is unacceptable. If an order is delivery, it should be delivered.
What makes things worse is when I finally made it to the driver, he literally slung the bag of food at me and walked away in anger not even allowing time to say a word. This is not the behavior that should be rewarded with pay.
On a positive note, the food was decent (besides being less than «fresh» after the amount of time helping the driver do his job. 2 stars out of fairness to the business (driver gets –4 in my book)

My order was pretty basic:
Wonton soup and egg dropped soup.
I needed fluids as I was sick and breaking a fever.
These soups were excellent.
They were delivered in a timely fashion and very well priced.

Coming from Washington, I have struggled to find good Chinese food here in Houston, but I also cannot live without Chinese food delivery. We have tried pretty much all of them, and we keep coming back to Montrose Chinese.
My husband gets the General Tso’s chicken (pretty much every time) and he’s never had a complaint. He gets excited when there are 7 pieces of chicken, but they are good sized pieces and he’s never been able to finish it all, so I’m still a little unclear as to the fan fare for that extra piece.
My orders have varied from several of the chicken dishes, lo mien, pork dishes, rice, etc. I’ve been happy with them all — but there is one thing on the menu that I get every single time. SPICY MONTROSE DUMPLINGS.
Y’all, this is a spicy dumpling lovers dream. You get a solid number of dumplings (as opposed to the 2 that come in the won ton soup). It comes soaking in this red, spicy, and oh so delicious «broth» (?) That’s not really the right word, it’s a broth/​sauce/​marinade kind of thing. Nevertheless, you’ll end up adding some of it to all of your food. I’ve even ordered this as my meal when the hubs wanted Chinese and I wasn’t hungry — still can’t go without these dumplings.
Overall, I think the food is a solid 3.5 or 4, but those dumplings plus the fast delivery and online ordering — Definitely a 5.

Nothing amazing but decent Chinese food if you are in the mood. I always call in and order and they have my order ready within 10 minutes! Their house fried rice is pretty decent and takes 5 minutes to get ready. Not very expensive either so it’s a quick fix for lunch or dinner to take back home!

Its pretty good food for an affordable price. Best delivery rest close to home. We always order through GrubHub and it works great!
Love their LoMein, their orange and their sesame chicken!
