History

Established in 1991.

MJ Designs was founded in 1991. Alfonso, the founder, was the sole employee for the first five years. Alfonso designed the jewelry, mounted the stones and did all of the polishing himself. He hired his first employee in 1996 and hired his first polisher a year later. During this same period the company’s services were expanded to include buying and selling of gold and diamonds. With the expansion of services the name was changed to MJ Gold Traders.

MJ Gold Traders continues to grow through partnerships with corporations such as Ben Bridge, White Hall Jewelers, Helzberg Diamonds, Gordon’s Jewelers and Zales. With this continued success the company has kept pace with the advances in technology and equipment to remain a leader in the jewelry industry.

Today, MJ Gold Traders is an independent workshop with computer aided design (CAD), laser welding, stone mounting, polishing, jewelry production, jewelry repair and watch restoration services. Our great team of experts is at your service.

Business Owner

Alfonso started in the jewelry industry in Michoacán, Mexico in the most humorous way. He began wanting to design jewelry for himself, but it never happened! He ended up designing jewelry for everyone else except himself. After moving to Guadalajara, Mexico, he apprenticed with many jewelry makers. After mastering his skills he decided to move to Los Angeles, CA to work for Harling Products where he honed and mastered the art of setting stones. A family member invited him to move to Houston, TX. Here he fell in love with the Texan way. He started working for Diamonds Unlimited with the dream go into business for himself. In January of 1991 his dream was realized when opened MJ Gold Traders.
