History

Established in 1979.

Ettienne Leibman opened Leibman’s Wine & Fine Foods in Houston, TX in partnership with her husband Ralph in 1979 after emigrating from South Africa. On December 20, 2003, this Houston specialty food store, a labor of love for 24 years, had burned to the ground just in time for the holiday rush. Ettienne Leibman had spent 24 years of blood, sweat, and tears building a business, and in a few hours, it was destroyed. Leibman immediately vowed to resurrect her store.

Houston’s Premier Deli & Specialty Food Store & Grocery

On December 2, 2004, Leibman came back with a bang, cutting the ribbon on a sparkling 11,300-square-foot Leibman’s Wine & Fine Foods, more than double the size of the previous store. With the opportunity to build her beloved Houston specialty food store from scratch, Leibman and her team have created a stellar market. With extra space and an ever-​increasing customer count, Leibman is eager to bring in more merchandise.

I was turned on to this place by a fellow Unilocaler from my job. She told me its a family owned shop. I have been a few times since then. They offer hot/​cold sandwiches as well as hot food. They also offer wine and other items as there is a small store located within this location. They even have a sommelier on site to help you with your wine selection!
You see a lot of upscale vehicles in the parking lot. The deli is towards the back and you place your order and then they give you a ticket and you got to one of the cash registers to pay. They will then call your name to pick up your order. There is a section for seating for you can take out.
Its a great place to grab and bite to eat on the run or to sit and dine in. I will definitely be telling my other Unilocaler co workers to try them out.

Love, Love, Love this place! Their pasta salads are just great, the macaroni salad is one of the best I’ve even had. The shrimp with dill pasta is also very good, lots of shrimp, and very fresh. I’ve been going here for a few years, and it’s always just great. The mac and cheese, orzo salads, and ham salad I get over and over; being from the midwest, I miss ham salad, and this is the only place I’ve ever seen it. I actually like Leibman’s better than home, bigger pieces of ham, and other vegetables in it. The «Gone in a Minute» cheese spread is addictive. I also like their selection of candies. Favorites are Pecan Grizzlies and Milk Chocolate Coconut Haystack. They also have one of the best Muffalettas, on the right kind of bread. The prices might be a little high, but it’s worth it. I never mind paying more when the food is really good. Oh, and their mini-​quiches are also really good. There’s a lot more things I’ve tried and loved, but the aforementioned ones are what I can remember right now. Highly recommend Leibman’s! Nice staff, too!

This is an excellent upscale deli and fine foods store in the Memorial area. I like to think of it as a Mom & Pop version of Central Market, and much more convenient if you don’t live inside the loop. The owners are almost always on site and wandering around to greet customers, help make recommendations, and just get to know you.
When you walk in, there are all kinds of housewares and decorations to your left, and an impressive wine selection to the right ranging from more affordable bottles to high end. They don’t have any Boone’s Farm crap, but you can land a steal with one of their $ 7 – 8 selections, or you can go for a more classic French or Californian wine for upwards of $ 100 if you want The sommelier is always happy to make recommendations based on taste.
The deli at the back makes sandwiches to order and has a cooler full of fresh made entrees, sides, salads, and pates. Everything is priced a la carte or by the pound. It’s a bit more expensive than you’d find at your local grocery store, but it’s definitely worth trying and bringing to special occasions. They have an excellent cheese dip mix called «Gone in 60 Seconds» that you can cover with a jalapeño jam and service with crackers.
If you swing by, try whatever South African food they have on hand. The owners are South African and make their cultural food as if it was homemade. If you’re less adventurous, they have some of the best Shepherd’s Pie and bread pudding in town. As far as sandwiches go, their Reuben is one of the best in town, and costs less than you’d pay at a Katz’s or Kenny & Ziggy’s.

I have been home sick (South African) and as we know we South Africans no matter where in the world we are we love having our products or things that are familiar to us around. So today after 5 years I finally decided to drive to Liebmans and that comfort I felt just seeing goodies from South Africa. I basically put everything in my basket wish they had a larger selection of chips, Like Simba chops. Going back when I run out of it all

We’ve rarely been in the store when one or both owners weren’t there. Etienne frequently comes by our table to thank us for coming & the food is delicious. We’ve been customers since their first small wine store opened and watched them grow through the years to the beautiful store they are now!

Reading reviews and yes, snotty attitude not from staff but from owners themselves specifically. I shop there regularly for 9 years now and the owners always look down on me. I do adverise their store a lot too to friends. They are very stingy as well. Nevertheless, I still enjoy the store and try to ignore the owners. 2 stars for the snobby attitude, 4 stars for quality stuff.

The service here is horrible and the staff is rude. I came in looking for a bottle of wine and I had a few in mind. As I was looking at their very small selection of wine, their resident expert asked me what I needed while sitting on a stool (he didn’t even get up). I asked him about the two bottles I had in mind (in the $ 30 range which is their usual). He scowled at me the whole time and said «We don’t carry $ 6,000 bottles of wine.» His behavior and response were both very strange and he was rude the entire time. Another staff member who overheard actually apologized to me for his behavior. I don’t plan on coming back when I can go to much friendlier places with better selections and prices.

I have enjoyed this place several times for lunch and each visit has been a treat.
Atmosphere — store/​café in one. Upon entering, patrons are immediately introduced to home, holiday or seasonal decorations. Today there were Halloween and fall themed decorations for sale. Besides this, the store has a very nice selection of wine and cheese you can buy. If you want to sit down for lunch, they have tables that fit a few friends but it cannot support large groups.
Food — Yummy options — Hot and cold sandwiches, lots of fresh salads and plate meals available too. I really like their spicy Texas pimento cheese if you want a little something different. They have a small dessert section but the candy bar is incredible! Chocolate and other treats are sold by the pound. Be careful because this could be dangerous if you’ve got a sweet tooth.
Price — a bit higher than average. But you get what you pay for. In my opinion, quality equals price. I don’t mind paying a bit more for the good stuff.

We ate there Sunday wasting time while getting oil changed next door. Got the Afician Chicken Salad on croissant (itty bitty croissant). For the price I was figuring it to be a full sized one. It was a great sandwich just hoping for more. Waiting on the food I saw the half option and wished I had ordered it. When it arrived I was glad I didn’t it was so small I don’t know how you get anything smaller! And about 8 chips and pickle for almost $ 8. Hubby got breakfast panini short on tomatoes cut too thin and lacking. Overall stick to chicken salad that they are known for. Me, I won’t be rushing back maybe for the chicken salad no bread next time!

I have eaten at Leibman’s for many years now and have always appreciated the quality of their food. One of my favorites is the Reuben sandwich. Today I went there and had a Reuben that was so disappointing that I felt compelled to write this review. A very thin layer of meat (Reubens are supposed to be HEARTY), practically no sauerkraut, and very little Russian dressing. And why 3 pieces of bread? To make it look bigger, I suspect. Adding another slice of rye & calling it a triple decker doesn’t disguise what they are doing, trying to cut costs. As for me, I’d pay more for the sandwich the way they used to make it (where you could taste the meat more & the bread less). If you want to make a sandwich for smaller appetites, offer a smaller version, but don’t call this puny thing a Reuben.

My son treated my husband and myself to a Mother’s Day Lunch at Leibmans. Wow what a wonderful meal. I had a green salad with fresh berries, peppercorn salmon which was cooked perfectly. Lovely wild rice pilaf and grilled asparagus and topped off with a beautiful fruit flan. Portions were so big that I had enough to take home for another meal. All the food was so well cooked with fresh ingredients by Chef Robert. And Mrs. Leibman as always was a delightful hostess. The price of 20.00 per plate was certainly a bargain. Love Leibman’s with it friendly and knowledgeable staff and high quality food.

Went there for tea on a Saturday afternoon. The place was very quiet. The tea set included (per person): three mini sandwiches, a scone with cream and jam, mini brownie and mini vanilla cake (not too sure what the last one was, to be honest) and tea. The sandwiches were ok, the bakery items were not the freshest and tasted store-​bought. Service was so-​so. It’s hard to beat the price of 12.95 $ per head but then again you get what you pay for. They have all sorts of imported groceries (such as Marmite, PG Tips, Ambrosia custard, etc.), but many of them can be found in other grocery stores at much better prices.
You can get a free sandwich for giving a 5 star review…
Not too sure we would come back.

Leibman’s is one of my favorite delis in Houston. I am usually very picky about my food but the sandwiches, salads and desserts here are fantastic! Their jalapeño cheddar pimento cheese sandwich and potato salad are my personal favorites.
Not only that, they have a wonderful variety of sandwich spreads, dips, snacks and chocolates from all over! The carry a wide range of Stonewall Kitchen products which are usually hard to find.
It is in a convenient location as well, close to my house.

Beautiful store, yummy sandwich, okay tea, expensive! The customer service was nothing to brag about on here. Will be great for an occasional lunch and high tea on Friday/​Saturday sounds amazing! I’m bringing my mom!
