KTRU FM 91.7 – Rice University Radio

For me this is one of the few tolerable stations on AM/​FM airwaves. Radio stations are synoymous with the newspaper and movie theatres; still around and slowly being evaporated by the expedience of consumer products and their many forms.
On select nights there are themes that the station follows covering all genre’s of music, even genre’s one wouldn’t imagine exists. At times, weekends from midnight on fro, the station becomes a bizarre bazaar as if the station is on auto-​pilot and its media player plays all songs at random which makes for good entertainment, great entertainment when herbally induced. However, this is rare. Most of the time you’ll get something you’d have to be bored out of your mind to hear.

In Houston’s determination to be even more «nothing,» than it is, KTRU is going away.
Rice sold KUHF the license for their portion of the airwaves. Everything that makes Houston anything like a legitimate big city (subculture) is as wobbly as a newborn doe, or dissappearing. Houston is the 4^th largest city in the nation, and the drop in quality/​variety from the top three (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago) is precipitous.
As for KTRU, it’s been sacrificed on the shrine of Rice Presidents David Leebron’s ego. Universities are expanding at an absurd rate, and not because the education is getting better. In this case, Rice is becoming a degree mill and KTRU was turned into lucre so that administrators can have more cash sources for their inflated salaries.
Thanks for whoring out Rice University, David Leebron! Just look at devious, greedy whore Leebron trying to obviate his nefarious actions with «Oh, gee it just happened to be standing by innocently when all of this occured», in this article. Go home, Easterner. Go ruin something in Boston or New York:

Check KTRU’s website for the weekly roundup of specialty shows, covering genres including reggae, post punk, folk/​Americana, noise, and electronica. The station also broadcasts a few Rice sports games, the occasional in-​station performance, and some special campus events. In the rare instances when a DJ isn’t around, KTRU broadcasts WRN (the World Radio Network) or its new «robotic» DJ takes over (pre-​recorded sets). You can make requests online or over the phone; set lists are available online.
KTRU also hosts a wonderful, free outdoor show every spring on the Rice campus.
You don’t have to be a student to DJ. DJ application deadlines are in the fall, spring, and summer. KTRU is generally acclaimed as one of the best college stations in the country, but though I DJ’d there for 6 years I don’t have the concrete info on that at my disposal (will update later with real info).
