Food was meh — definitely takeout-esque. Pad Thai was not really pad Thai. The Thai salad was way too sour.

Worst green curry ever. Very watery and not full of flavor like I’m used to. I also tried an appetizer which was okay. But, I recommend trying all the other Thai restaurants in Houston before going here.

I’ve been coming here for the past 3 years and the food has become bland and the prices have increased. I got a level 4 spiciness on my once favorite yellow curry and it didn’t even singe my taste buds. I don’t know if they had new owners but it’s declined on service as well. It doesn’t seem to taste like authentic thai food anymore. Disappointed coming back tonight.

New owners. Although I have not had anything other than the soup it is not the same. Very disappointed so far.

Super tasty Thai food. We moves out of the area but still come in about 3 times a year to eat there. Worth every penny for the $ 10 or so on avg. for meals

Solid, flavorful food. Egg rolls were okay. Drunken rice was good. Spicy and full of flavors. Solid place. Would come back.

Poor service, worse food. Very disappointed in this place. They completely messed up my order and refused to fix it. Terrible customer service.

This place is a nice quiet spot in the heart of Montrose. You can tell it’s more of a local restaurant, and many people get their orders to go. However, my boyfriend and I enjoy dining in and sitting outside when the weather is nice. The black rice is probably the main reason why I return to this place frequently. It is filled with flavor and compliments any curry dish. My favorite curry to pair my rice with is the panang curry(spicy level 5) with tofu. My boyfriend is a huge fan of their coconut ice cream, so we usually end our meal with this delicious treat. I’m not sure if the ice cream is home-made, but it certainly tastes like it.

I’ve had the garlic chicken/rice, soup, salad, egg roll & pad Thai. Very confused why the pad Thai is pink colored. I always have to Doctor my lunch w/the condiments they supply! In other words, there are better Thai restaurants in the area. Try them!

Four stars for convenience. Yes there are better options if you’re a Thai foodie, and if you have to have ambience, or a wait person instead of counter service. But for reasonably priced and tasty food delivered to your table quickly I find this place hard to beat. They also do crazy busy take out service if you’re in a hurry.

I am a huge fan of Thai food. So huge that my best friend of ten years has spoiled me with the best Thai food! I decided to give Khun Kay Thai Café a chance since I’ve been adventurous in regards to trying new Thai restaurants lately. I always order Pad Thai and Pad See Ew wherever I go because those are my safe menu choices. I got the items togo. –Tom Yum Soup(5⁄5): It was full of flavor and was just breath takingly delicious. The mushrooms were perfectly cooked and flavorful due to the amazing broth! I just was wowed by the soup that I knew that nothing else from this restaurant could possibly disappoint. –Shrimp Pad Thai(2⁄5): They spelt it extremely weird on the menu, but I knew what they were trying to get across. I could taste the peanut oil and the usual taste of the pad thai, but it wasn’t as strong as many other Thai restaurants. I’ve had better, definitely without a doubt, but it wasn’t impossible to eat. –Chicken Pad See Ew(0⁄5): This was possibly the worse attempt of pad see ew. It didn’t even taste like pad see ew… it tasted like perfectly good flat noodles. That was it. I give them props for cooking a good consistency of flat noodles, but there was no flavors besides that. The chicken looked brown, so I assumed the sauce was on there, but the chicken was bland as well. Did they forget the sauce and seasoning for the dish? I had to drench it in soy sauce just to get some flavor so I didn’t feel like I was just eating empty carbs. I would not order this dish again… Overall, I would not return to this restaurant. The flavors were lacking, more in some dishes than others. The portions were quite pricey too.

Don’t know what all the fuss is about. this place is average at best. Likes to load things up with vegetables — very unthai. Prefer Kanomwan or vieng Thai. Won’t be coming back. Had basil chicken, panang curry, coconut soup, and pad Thai(it was pink — not sure if that was for breast cancer month or what).

I’ve been a long-time frequent customer at Khun Kay(see previous review from 2010). Although they are still one of my favorite Thai places in Houston, they have gone downhill in recent years. Prices have increased and quality has decreased at the same time. My favorite dish(the Massaman curry) has increased in price, while at the same time having several ingredients(green beans, broccoli, and red peppers) removed. Now the dish just has meat, potatoes, carrots, and pineapple. I would rather just pay more and get the full dish they used to serve. It’s still my go-to Thai place, but every time I visit I get sad, because this place used to be so much better.

My boyfriend and I get take out here at least once a week. I’m a big Thai food fan and this place doesn’t disappoint. The Pad Thai isn’t my favorite but Red Curry, Tom Ka soup, Mango Sticky rice are all excellent.

I went to this place because I pass by it all the time and was interested in seeing what they had to offer. Today was finally the day I decided to give it a try. Too bad I don’t have anything to report about the food. I didn’t even get to taste anything. Why, you might ask? Because this place has poor customer service! I came into the restaurant and there were only two people dining. There was one waiter standing at attention near the front counter and one other employee behind the counter doing what looked to be just busy work. Of course, since this was my first time there I came in and stood and looked at the specials that were written in chalk on the board. I walk up to the counter and grab and menu and take a seat to look it over. I’m looking at the menu, looking at the chalkboard and going back and forth between the two. The waiter is just standing there looking at me. He can clearly see that I’m uncertain of what I would like to order. He never walks over and asks me if need help. He never even tried to suggest anything. I’m a salesman by trade. I’m just sitting there thinking that if I was that waiter and saw a customer sitting there looking lost, that’s my opportunity to try to suggest something to help them out or at least ask if they need help. At least TRY to sell the customer SOMETHING! If they taste something, the more likely they are going to come back if it’s good. In this case, I’ll never know if the food was good or not. I sat there with the menu in hand and no one ever even acknowledged my presence. Again, the restaurant was NOT busy. There were only 2 people in the place, 3 if you include me. Management needs to do a better job of training their employees to acknowledge customers and do a suggestive sell! That’s restaurant 101 type stuff. It’s not hard and will help you keep customers coming in the door and helping the establishment to make money. I decided that I didn’t want to spend my money in a place that won’t even acknowledge me

I have eaten here off and on over the past 12 years since living in Houston. Each time I walk away with the same feeling. Over priced for the amount of food you receive and they need to kick it up a notch with the spicy… I always order Spicy #5…Highest you can order and it is barely medium… I just wish Montrose would finally get a decent Thai place…

This Montrose Thai restaurant has a whole vegetarian section of the menu, including appetizers, entrees, curries, desserts, and a fried rice and a vegetarian Pad Thai without egg(vegan). None of the food has ever blown me away, but it’s great to have so many vegetarian choices on a menu — and it’s a very simple, clean, casual restaurant to have a quick bite!

This is one of the few restaurants in Houston I’ll get a craving for. It is another one of those counter service restaurants(I don’t know why Houston has so many, I like to be served when I go to a restaurant). They offer the full range of Coke products, Thai tea, beer, and wine. They now offer the Chang beer tower if you plan on staying awhile. I am sorry to say I don’t get too adventurous with my ordering here. I order one of the curries with chicken on brown rice(I normally get the Massaman because I like the potatoes in it) and I start with the shrimp spring rolls. I have tried the black rice they claim is healthier. It was good, but a little sweeter tasting. I also will change out the rice for noodles sometimes. This is definitely one of the better if not the best tasting Thai restaurant I have found in Houston. They have two lots so if you cannot find a spot in the lot next to the restaurant they now have one a little further north off of Montrose. Most importantly, it seems very clean.

Meh. This joint is fast, we literally got our waters from the machine and sat down at a table and our food came out. Thai fast food at its finest. Maybe that’s why there was an odd abundance of take-out orders? Order of red chicken curry came with a little plate of rice. Plain and nothing to rave about. Also ordered the drunken fried rice and disappointedly, there was no taste to it. It actually seemed as if it was bland Chinese fried rice w/broccoli and pork. I literally had to mix in some of the red curry to give it flavor. About $ 10 for each plate and we still weren’t full. First Thai place I’ve been to where I had to go home and eat again. Don’t come here for a fancy ambiance, rather expect it to be a simplistic fast food place with unappealing brown plates with an added bonus of stray cats waiting outside the door. Definitely not the best Thai food in Houston, and if you think that it is, you are definitely missing out! Most likely won’t be visiting again as there are far better Thai places in Houston.
