Joe Lee’s Barber Shop

I had a similar experience to one of the reviewers. My barbershop was closed for the holidays and I have I job interview in a few days. I called this place on a Saturday to make sure they’re open. The gentleman on the phone said they close at 4:30 pm. When I went there, a costumer asked the same question and the answer was 5 pm. Ok no big deal.
Without greeting, I was asked to come over to the chair. I told the young barber how I like my hair cut. Most of the time, he wasn’t even looking at me while I was explaining. The guy was chatting with his colleagues and suddenly was looking for a screwdriver. I thought he was going to disassemble my head or something. Anyway, he gave me a mirror to check the back part and it was way too short. When I complained about that, his answer was «OK». I wasn’t satisfied with my haircut but I don’t usually complain too much. It was too short and unfixable anyway.
I paid the $ 23 which wasn’t worth it and said thank you. The guy didn’t even reply. If you go there, I think you should ask for one of the older gentlemen. I’m never coming back to this place though.

I walked in with a pair of Coach leather woman’s boots for a shine. I waited for Larry to shine them. I was the only female present in the work area but there was also an employee in the side office. The men maintained proper conversation and interactions. Larry did a nice job on the boots and was reasonably priced at $ 6. Would return again. Building is easily accessible and parking is available.

Treated my man to a barber shop shave after No Shave November. Walked right in, no apt necessary. The barber took his time, shaving the beard, trimming the beard, hot foam, hot towels, and the classic straight edge shave. He said he was the closest shave ever, took about 50 minutes. Excellent service for $ 25! Cash only but they have an ATM inside. Ample parking, easy to get too right off the Pierce elevated.

I get my hair done by Alex usually, but all the other barbers are great. They listen. Old school place here, with decent prices. (which is rare around the area every hair place around wants to charge me 50+ no thanks I’m a student)

Nice clean shop conveniently located in downtown near freeways. A great option for students at the University of Houston for sure. They offer great haircuts and shoeshines. Had my haircut by Ambrose — really nice guy who knows what he’s doing.

First things first… if you wear «product» in your hair this place probably isn’t for you. Go on down to the beauty shop and the real men get their hair cut. Definitely a man’s barber shop here. Been coming here since haircut-​one after moving to Houston and is the only place I will go. Barbers are experts in their field and know their way around the straight razor. Hands down, end of story best barber shop ever.
Do bring cash, and leave your ego at the door.

This place has a nice old timey feel… it’s great. I always go to Adolfo. He’s got a great eye for detail and will make you look fresh and clean. Been going here for about one year now and haven’t thought to go anywhere else since. It’s $ 23 for a cut, not bad

Sign says they open at 8:00, show up at 9:00 and they are still closed… not a way to run a business if you ask me…

It’s like 4.5 stars… I walked in with a crazy overgrown mop of hair and came out looking crisp and clean. The shop is relaxed and friendly — totally manland, but without pretense or attitude — just is what it is. The barbers all appeared to be taking all appropriate time with each customer to ensure they had a fine, high quality hair cut. With all four chairs operating, the wait was really minimal — esp considering I was there late-​lunchtime on a Friday afternoon. The prices were totally reasonable, the parking free and easy-​peasy… Gosh. Just returning to Houston after 25 years away in Austin, I was not looking forward to finding a new barber shop… it can be a difficult road littered with disappointment. But this was a huge success the first time out!
Special praise for Ambrose — who made me feel like a valued old customer right away and gave me a really great haircut.

Ambrose cut my son’s hair. My son tried to cut his own hair and left himself a bald spot on top of his head! Ambrose did an awesome job fixing it. Plus my son wanted to stop going to a «little kids salon» and go somewhere were a Man gets his hair cut, cause according to him he’s a man now. So we took him to an old school barbershop. He loved it! He feels grown up! He’s only five!
By the way they also have a place to shine your shoes !!

Best barbershop I’ve been to in Houston, every Barber in there has my complete trust when I sit down, I give quick directions and know I’m gonna get a great haircut and razor trim, good chill relaxed atmosphere

It is a little on the expensive side$ 25.00 but way cheaper than a high end salon and they do cash only so it’s inconvenience. I do need to find a cheaper one for my touch ups/​cleaning. I seen execs/​white color workers here to a south west vato with there fades. So they can handle all types of hair cuts and people.

While visiting Houston, I needed a haircut and this place popped up at the top of the list. It was a little bit of a distance from my hotel, but based on the reviews I knew it would be worth the trek.
Walking in, you can tell it’s an old school barber shop (which is what I like). I waited a few minutes and then Joe Lee himself comes out from the back and puts me in a chair.
In addition to a nice haircut, I learned a lot about how Houston has grown in the 50+ years that Joe Lee has been there. It was a nice, leisurely cut and I felt very welcome in the store.
Now, from my perspective, $ 23 is a little pricey for a buzz cut (which is what I get) and it’s $ 9 more than I pay in NYC, but I’m not going to complain about that.
This is a cool place and even if it’s your first time there, you’ll feel right at home. Big fan of the Joe Lee barber shop!

I needed a haircut for an upcoming interview and I was relatively short on time. This place looked pretty good based on reviews and was nearby, so I took a chance. The location is a little awkward and the parking lot was a little small, but that didn’t bug me too much. It’s a pretty old school shop on the inside with a nice unpretentious vibe. Cops was on TV, a mix of blue collar and business people customers, and healthy banter you expect in a shop. I really liked my barber personally, but it was pretty clear about halfway through the cut that he was the least experienced guy in the shop. I asked for a simple scissors cut without anything special. He went about his work, trimming here and there, paying a lot of attention to my hairline in the back. When he finished, he left my hair somewhat wet and it looked ok. I didn’t think to ask him to dry it up a bit so I could see how it would ‘really’ look, and this would be my downfall. I was kind of irritated by the cash only policy, especially since their convenient ATM charges $ 3 on top of whatever my bank will end up gouging me, but whatever — I was in a rush.
When I got home and actually dried my hair off completely, I was shocked at how much worse it looked. My guy didn’t even pretend to blend the slightly longer top with the shorter sides, resulting in this weird pseudo-​bowl line around the middle of my head. Also my bangs in front needed some extra trimming to match the overall look.
This experience taught me an important lesson: never leave a barber shop without seeing your hair dry and without product (or however you normally wear your hair). The wet hair obscured the horrendous nature of the cut, and I’m going to look slightly absurd tomorrow at my interview.
The only reason this isn’t one star is that when I called the place and spoke to the manager, they were very nice and told me to come right back in for a fix. Sadly I didn’t have the time and didn’t have a lot of faith in them. I imagine if I had been taken care of by one of the older guys there it would have been just fine, but as a new customer at a place you are pretty much obligated to get cut by the first available guy.

I visited Joe Lee’s for the first time last month. Not only was it a great haircut, Joe Lee’s offers a reasonable price for the area. If you are looking for a classic barbershop and you live in the Midtown to Downtown area — look no further. Joe Lee is a great conversationalist and has been cutting hair for decades. I especially liked his technique with the straight razor (thinning out hair, etc.).
My only critique is there is limited parking and the shop is smaller than most. Otherwise, great for the area and I will be back.

Has a classic timeless feel… I really like how small it is (4 chairs).
Open 6 days a week and conveniently located downtown. I come here once every 2 weeks and have never had to wait in line even for a second. I don’t know how they do it!
I do know however that the barbers here LISTEN to what you say and then they truly deliver. I appreciate the attention to detail and how they take their time to make sure you’re getting the haircut you envisioned.
Friendly, consistent, quality service is what keeps me coming back…

Go there — the place is a real bonafide barber shop. The barber took his time giving me one of the best haircuts I have had in a long time. It’s unpretentious, clean, and inexpensive. I paid 22 plus tip. I noticed they had barbers in each age range to give haircuts that suited their customers. You had «old timers» sitting next to oil and gas young professionals. Ask for Pat, you’ll be glad you did! He makes you feel welcome while really taking into consideration what you’re looking for in a cut.

Good service, they take the time needed to give a good hair cut.
The price went up a little but for the service it’s worth the money.
