Our talented and creative Chef Josie Paredes combines her experience and passion for exceptional food to create a delicious selection of menu choices. Re-​defining casual dining, we present an alternative to the average pub fare with a wide variety of enticing sharing plates, sliders, thin-​crust artisan pizzas and an amazing weekend brunch.

The bar serves up creative cocktails, craft beers and a diverse wine list, sure to make you feel good. now.

History

Established in 2007.

What began in 2007 as simply three friends’ aspiration to open a place that «Austin» would want to hang out in, quickly grew into much more. A little luck, a lot of hard work, and the help of some great people, J. Black’s has become a staple in Austin and Dallas, and we are thrilled to be coming to Houston soon. Our idea was, and will continue to be to offer a fun, social, neighborhood lounge experience. By offering restaurant quality food and service, yet still having the comfort and energy of your favorite bar, J. Black’s has become home to a uniquely diverse group of patrons no matter the time or event. We look forward to making you a regular soon…

Business Owner

All from Texas, but none from Austin, the friends and founders of J. Black’s Feel Good Lounge got to the capitol city as soon as they could. The route there for each of them was very different, as each of friends come from very different backgrounds, which is evident in their individual styles.

This diversity coalesced into the concept that became J. Black’s Feel Good Lounge. Each brings their unique experiences and abilities to the table that forms a creative mix that works. With no signs of slowing down, Sean Fric, Brian Franzman and Judson Sutherland hope too continue providing fun, yet comfortable neighborhood establishments by always offering great food and excellent service. They hope to make you a regular soon.

Are you the kind of person that takes your dog everywhere you go? That’s me! I am always looking for cool patios to chill with my dog at. I found this place because I wanted to fulfill on a steak craving. I sat on their nice expansive patio on a Sunday evening facing west. I was able to enjoy good conversation with my boyfriend, watch the sky turn colors as the sunset, while enjoying good drinks and food. We were able to take advantage of their reverse happy hour prices. I had the steak he had the lamb. Both were good, especially for bar food choices. Since they have so many TVs we were able to still peak at the game. The service was attentive. We’ll be back!

Let me start off by saying this was my first visit and it was on a Sunday afternoon. I was there with my best friend and we both found food and the service to be good. We split some chicken wings and pigs in a blanket to start. After that I had the lamb chip lollipops with fries and he had the Texas sliders with fries. Now why would I go 4 stars and not 5 because the handles on the faucets in the men’s restroom were missing.

Wow, what a difference. Just walking up to the building I could tell things have taken a bad turn. The weed overgrown garden boxes were the first hint, the closed down bar to the left was the second. The whole place needs a week to retool and clean up. I shudder to think what the place looks like in the light, J Blacks keeps the lighting very low. The best thing I had was a Ziegenbock in the can. Sliders were dry, the crab cakes had a strange taste. the «must have» Brussels sprouts with bacon were just that. Deep fried with tiny and thin Sysco bacon. Nary an seasoning, and burned to a crisp. The male bartender looked annoyed, and the females were performing barback duties which means their attention was elsewhere. We came because we had a gift card. We probably won’t be back. This place used to be so much better.

I walked in at 4:30pm today and the restrooms looked like I walked into a dirty old Gas station restroom. Nasty!

Very disappointed! Some friends and I met up here on a Sunday afternoon for brunch. There was a good crowd of people but not too busy like other places. We ordered a couple tacos, French toast, eggs and bacon which you’d think wouldn’t take too long. An hour later, we still hadn’t received our food. I had to leave for work and wanted to pay for my bill (which I had told the server) and even that took forever. I asked to speak with a manager and she said the kitchen was backed up and hadn’t even started cooking our food. It was due to them being very busy and she would comp my food. What’s the point of coming my food if I never receive it? I ended up getting my food which was just thrown together in a pizza box. It was my first time here and I was very turned off!!!

So this was our first time here and absolutely loved it. Hubby had the lamb chop lollipops and i jumbo lumb crab mac and cheese and Margherita pizza. Awesomeness wrapped in Feel Good. Happy hour prices were bomb.

Its been sometime since my last visit and to be honest I wasn’t really looking to it, but some mutual friends of friends where here already for brunch.
Parking wasn’t an issue, plenty of spots. Its seems they’ve extended the front patio for outdoor seating all the way out toward the street with enough picnic style tables to accommodate all the people. I wasn’t really keen on having to sit close to the front with the DJ music blaring so conversation was hit and miss, thus the low interest in coming here. The brunch menu for Saturday and Sunday’s runs from 11−4pm which is nice since most places close at 3. The food prices I found very affordable and all the dishes from the All American (eggs, bacon, etc.), Crab Cake Florentine, & Steak and Eggs all got positive feedback and have my recommendation. Service was ok, cocktails were ok. Basically an A-​Ok experience!

The only good thing about this place was that dogs are allowed on the patio, but the self-​seating system meant that the servers didn’t even notice us till we flagged someone down (this also happened to a couple who came in after we had ordered, they waited at least 10 minutes before they got anyone). The service was ok after they noticed us. The food itself was bland, nothing special. Overall, not coming back.

The service is absolutely terrible, the food is just ok, nothing I would run back too. The calamari was rubbery, the hummus was just eh. The sweet potato fries were good, but I can go anywhere else to get better. But the unhappy, absence staff is what makes or breaks an ok food place. I wouldn’t voluntarily go back or suggest it.

When someone mentions lets go here my first thoughts are ‘meh’. This place has good food & decent drinks. Great location and they just extended their outdoor seating area to probably compete with porch swing across the street. All good things except the service here really lacks. I really wish this place would step it up a little bit and offer better specials for brunch, happy hour, and better drinks. It’s a shame to be in such a great location and only be an average establishment. I can say their pizza is really yummy! This place should be packed 24⁄7 but it’s not.

It’s a very nice place in the heights!
As usual in this area, it’s valet parking only I think. I didn’t spend time to look for a spot on the street but you might be able to.
I came with a Groupon. Order the lamb chop and crab cakes. Very decent foods for the prices and the ambience! With groupon, it was definitely a bargain!!! But I would approve it for the regular price as well. However, the portions are relatively small for the 2 plates that I ordered. I didn’t order pizza because I just wanted somethings light but the pizza looked delicious.

I like J Blacks for their atmosphere… literally, they couldn’t have done a better job planning and decorating this bar/​restaurant. Everything from the layout, to the light fixtures, the doors, the leather wrapped bar… you can tell they put a lot of thought and care into creating a hip, chic, industrial atmosphere and I LOVE it. The food menu has great items (those crab cakes, the sweet potato fries, the pizza… YYYUUUUUMMMMMM) and the drink menu is definitely impressive with lots of unique specialty crafted cocktails.
However, the service here is always sub par. I like the bar so much I sit there every time. I’m just never super impressed with the bartenders though. Their service is slow, they never seem happy to be there… which is a bummer because I am always happy to be at J Blacks.
Also — I HATE the valet system here. I showed up the other night at 8pm. There were tons of open spots and the valet runs up to my car. We ask if we HAVE to valet and he says no just park your car and make sure you tip me. As we parked, he stood next to the car to in fact make sure we tipped him for doing NOTHING. Unfortunately, the boyfriend only had a $ 5 so the deucebag got $ 5 for nothing. I’ll be blunt — that shit pisses me off. I would have rather parked on the street and risked getting side swiped than paid the guy $ 5. J Blacks — get rid of the dang valet system. It is more of a hassle to your customers than a help and the restaurant isn’t «upscale» enough to validate needing valet anyways.
Overall, though, this is a great restaurant and I’ll continue to come back because of the quality of the food and cocktails, the atmosphere and the location to my house.

Would give this place a 5 except the con artist valet guy left a bad taste in my mouth. My husband and I attended my friends graduation party here last Saturday and the parking lot was full. The valet guys couldn’t find the other customers keys so we were waiting in our car til they sorted it out. While we were waiting for valet to park our car a parking spot opened right next to the valet stand. The valet guy came over to us and told my husband that he would let us keep our keys if we tipped him. I didn’t hear him say this otherwise he would have heard some choice words from me. My husband told me about it once we got inside and he already tipped him $ 5 cause he wanted to keep our keys. The valet guy didn’t even do any work and he wanted a tip for letting us keep our keys? Come on dude! That’s foul. It’s not about the money but the principle. We tip people who are deserving not people who want something for nothing. I wonder if the management of the establishment is aware of what their con artist valet guys are doing. I figured that he thought since we parked literally right in front of the door he wouldn’t get a tip from us afterward. He said the whole parking lot was valet, there was no self parking option, and valet was complimentary, so basically he was saying we had no option but to tip him. They need a lesson in customer service. The bar itself was nice and the service inside was good. However, first impressions last, and the first person we encountered was the dishonest valet guy and it was enough to leave a bad enough impression on the place. To the management, check your valet guys!

My company does a lot of firm events here as there is plenty of room to host many people. It is a great place if you want to bring a big group! Food is great for sharing and drinks are also great!
I came here for brunch and the ‘texas sized taco’ will seriously fill you up! I was skeptical as it said ‘taco’ and not ‘tacos’ but it was more than enough! Bloody Mary bar for $ 5 was awesome, they give you the vodka in a large jar and you get to put all the fixin’s you want in and finish it off with the bloody mary mix! YUM!
Also, not too crowded for brunch which is pleasant when you want to snooze a little on the weekend! Lots of TVs around too for those not wishing to miss their favorite sports team play.
Only downside is this place does valet only in the evening, even at like 4pm when the parking lot is empty. Kind of annoying when you can see like 20 different empty spots in the lot to just park your own car, and then you walk out and instead of pulling your car up they just hand you the keys since your car is literally right there. (Brunch did not have valet, score!)

Food was great and service by Brandon was on point for a table of 5 ladies brunching. Prices are pretty reasonable and there was a good menu and drink selection. The breakfast pizza was huge and the steak & eggs were the perfect portion and very tender. Not sure why this place isn’t more crowded on a Sunday. I’d come back!

I came here for Sunday brunch and I left with mixed emotions.
We waited for about 15 minutes before we could even get someone to bring us menus, only after I flagged one of the waiters. When we received our drinks, I immediately noticed my glass looked dirty, thankfully it was only my water so I didn’t drink it. I feel this place has potential for 5 stars if they only improved on the service.
On the bright side, the place itself is nice and airy with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Nice spot to bring your pup along and sit outside. The brunch menu is very affordable and tasty, with a variety of options from quesadillas to French toast. They have $ 10 mimosa carafes and $ 2 mimosa singles throughout brunch.
The place wasn’t very busy so parking was a breeze. Complementary valet was also available but only between certain time frames.
I will definitely come back and try this spot again.

Feelin’ Good!
My husband and I have been here several times, just us, with friends, with large groups, etc., and it’s always a good time. The restaurant is split in two directions when you enter, our preference is to go to the right and sit in the bar area or the expansive patio. There is waiter service at all of the tables, it is quick and friendly and there is a fun cocktail menu to choose from, but take my word for it — the Acai Sangria and the Austin Mule are awesome!
As far as food goes, this restaurant is a great brunch spot with a variety of options to choose from including items from the lunch/​dinner menu as well. Favorites during our visits have been the pigs in a blanket andTexas Trio of dips as appetizers, and the breakfast tacos or sliders as something more substantial to nibble on. They have recently extended their patio and have plentiful TV’s, so this is an excellent spot to watch a game or grab a happy hour! I think it turns a bit «clubby» at nights on the weekends, so may want to wrap up your evening a little early if that’s not your scene. :)

Went last night 10÷22÷15 and wow has the service went down. Usually on a Th night the place is packed just shy of a year ago was it was jamming. Now, not so much. Only positive thing last night was 8pm on a Thursday night … front row parking. Not what an owner might want.
From the 10 minutes waiting for anyone to bring over a menu at the table (and trust me the right side of the place maybe had 15 people total counting the 1 bartender) to the bathrooms that were dirty with handless faucets that cut my finger trying to turn on the water… It was rough to say the least.
I’ll give some props to the cooks as the food was still as I remembered (3 pizzas) but damn the service was so bad I’ll probably not go back. The waitress was clueless and the manager/​supervisor that even came to our table of 3 wasn’t really polite and the cokes he brought, due to the waitress being nowhere in site, were very flat as the carbonation was way off.
When I noticed the bill had 3 cokes, only ordered 2, it was like pulling teeth to remove the extra Coke charge.
Feel good??? With over priced drinks boasting a stellar HH offering only $ 1 off cocktails making it STILL over priced… Ummm NO! The Coke even was horrible! Where is the happy… Or that good feeling? I just felt ignored, robbed, and forced to endure.
JB’s can keep their over priced drinks, and zombie waitstaff/​managers… Take your money down the street. Cheaper drinks, better service, and just as good food … are steps away, and trust me… You’ll «feel better» you listened.

I came for a sorority mixer during happy hour, and instantly felt at home in the space. It is upscale and modern without appearing so hip that you feel out of place and ancient. Plus, it was great that the place wasn’t too packed because that gave people breathing room to have conversations and relax after work.
Extremely nice waitress who served our party of around 20 – 25 with awareness and efficiency. I ordered the London Lemonade (hendrick’s gin, strawberry, basil, lemon, simple syrup,
peychaud’s bitters, prosecco), which was delicious! Since ya girl is a whiskey gal, I was a little sad that I didn’t see my main man Jack on the bar menu. But they have some great choices if you enjoy vodka and tequila.
We shared two types of appetizers: the Mediterranean Hummus and Texas Trio. The hummus was full-​bodied, but a little bland and the pita was a little burned on the edges. So if you make your own bomb hummus, I suggest trying a different appetizer. Although I didn’t try the queso and guac in the trio, the salsa was fresh and had a level acidity to it. Just watch out for the heat!
We also shared several margherita pizzas, which were good, but weren’t stellar. In my opinion, when there are so few ingredients, the quality has to really shine (less whistles to distract you from the core taste)! So it could’ve been improved by more cherry tomatoes and basil, and a little more time to let the dough rest.
Good place to unwind and get a drink during happy hour ($ 1 off for drinks), with excellent valet parking, but was a little disappointed by food offerings.

I’ve heard great things about this place, so my bf and I decided to give it a try. We went on a Tuesday, and I was pleasantly surprised with the half-​price pizza. I got the margherita pizza and it was pretty good.
My bf got the chicken sliders (listed as an entrée), and he was pretty disappointed. They tasted great, but the plate was super small. He only got two, smaller than average, sliders and a handful of fries. He finished the plate and still wasn’t full.
The drinks were disappointing also. I got the Austin mule, and I honestly could have made it better myself. I don’t think there was any vodka. And it didn’t even come in a cool mug like is mentioned!
Overall it was an average experience.

Parking was easy on a Sunday around 3:30pm, the place probably gets crowded & loud during peek hours. I love the front door of this restaurant, I know it’s a weird comment.
The server was attentive & made sure we were happy. The mojito is a no go, flat & didn’t taste right. The food semed ok but I’m not sure I would be a regular at this place.
The reason we came here was for the build your own bloody mary bar on Sunday after having brunch somewhere else. It’s only 5 $/​drink & there’s plenty of condiment options. I would go back for this!

I came here to meet a friend for drinks on my birthday, which was two weeks ago. I would actually give this place 3.5 stars, because I think that I just ordered the wrong things.
I like the fact that they provide complimentary valet, and the décor was nice. We weren’t really hungry so I ordered the Texas Trio and she ordered the calamari. I had the London Lemonade and my friend had the Cranberry Mint Tea Cooler. I finished my cocktail, but I didn’t like it. It was fine going down, but for some reason it had a soap-​y aftertaste that was really unpleasant. I tried my friend’s drink and I liked it better. I probably should have ordered that or the sangria.
The Texas Trio (chips with salsa, queso, and guac) was just ok – nothing to rave over. However, the calamari was really good, and this is coming from someone who usually hates calamari. That alone gives me hope for other food selections, because me liking calamari is nothing short of a miracle.
I’m optimistic about coming back in the future. It’s in the neighborhood and the other cocktails/​food items on their menu seem promising.

I’ve been to this place for brunch a few times and I always leave feeling unsatisfied. I have tried a couple different things on the menu (breakfast tacos, eggs and bacon, and eggs Benedict) and I have never been overly impressed. The eggs Benedict were way too gooey for me and the tacos were pretty bland. I would be interested in trying some of their food off the regular menu to compare.
The atmosphere is pretty good. If you can grab a spot on the patio, you should. Although, be prepared for barking dogs. The restaurant allows dogs outside and more than once did a few of them go off on some noise.

J. Black’s always struck me as a good venue with lots of potential. I drove by the place many times before finally deciding to drop in. I was impressed with the food and the service.
The inside of J. Black’s is HUGE. There is a lot of space with 2 outdoor areas and 2 indoor sections, each indoor section sporting its own bar. There’s booth seating, high tabletop seating, bar seating, and they even have a lounge area with a fireplace. They have plenty of TV’s, all broadcasting the current sporting event in full HD. No matter where you sit, you’ll have a good view of a TV.
I was pleasantly surprised by the food. The steak nachos were fantastic, and they weren’t stingy with the steak. The sliders were pretty good as well. Some may not like them because they cooked the beef sliders to medium doneness but I don’t mind that. The mac and cheese was just decent. Better than BRC but not as good as Max’s Wine Dive. The buffalo wings were decent as well.
The atmosphere on Friday evening was a little disappointing, though. I was expecting a larger crowd, given the venue size and the mandatory valet parking. It really wasn’t that crowded though. There was a private party taking up half the venue, but even the other half of the venue wasn’t very busy. To their credit, the service was still good despite the private party. I’ll definitely come back on other nights. Hopefully my experience will be just as good.

I tried writing a review for this Monday night when we went there but Unilocal was down for maintenance. Let’s give it another go:
I can’t complain about the food because it was good. Heard about it from a friend and then discovered the Groupon for it so obviously had to try it. Love the set up. It’s totally restoration hardware. Stale fries = Minus 1 star. Bad service = Subtract another star. Our waitress came to the table once to refill but after that she just disappeared only to ask how the food tasted. She seemed to be pretty occupied with serving other tables. I think the establishment can improve a lot by hiring more servers. She was the only one working there but did not seem interested in her job.
Food: The sweet potato fries were stale but the nachos and the sliders made up for it. The wagyu beef sliders literally melted in your mouth. One of the best sliders I have had in a while. The nachos were soo good. The guacamole was fresh and perfect.
I would probably recommend coming here if you want to discuss important prenuptial agreements with your lawyer, your ex-wife’s divorce lawyer to see if you can get him drunk and sign something else, or your overly testosterone injected boyfriend.
I really would have given it four stars if the fries weren’t so stale. They really left me with a bad taste in my mouth :(

I’ve been here a few times and sat at the bar. The service there has always been glacial and always when there’s only been a couple of people at the bar — not as if they were slammed. The last time, and it will be the last time, the entire bar staff was watching YouTube on one of their phones while we were trying to get their attention for another drink — see pic. Pretty bad, it’s times like this when you wished you knew the owner so that you could tell them about things like this

2. your job is not my job. It’s not up to me to track down a J Black’s manager, one of whom should be on the floor anyway, and point out the lack of attentiveness of your staff. Management never seemed to be present the times that I have been there as the comfort level of ALL of the bar staff goofing off at the same time (see pic) clearly indicates.

I just happened to be in the area on a Tuesday night when some friends suggested that I stop by. I walked in thinking I would be underdressed since I had been running errands, but this place is totally unpretentious, and indeed, a ‘feel good’ place as the name indicates. This seems like a good spot to hit during a bar crawl with a group of friends. It was moderately filled with patrons. The layout of this place gives it a very chill vibe.
The food was good. This place is known for its pizzas, so I was interested in seeing what the hype was about. Thanks to the eclectic tastes of my friends, I tried the Spinner pizza with apples and sausage. It was weird, but surprisingly good. The beef sliders were also good, but not memorable. I’ll probably order something else next time. The sangria was light and refreshing. It was a good night.

J. BLACK’S describes itself as a” Feel Good Kitchen & Lounge”. I couldn’t have defined it better myself. I love places where I don’t feel underdressed or overdressed, a place where I can just BE!
JB’s is located at the corner of Heights Blvd. and Washington Ave. I almost passed it because their sign wasn’t on but I found it just the same.
PARKING
There is a $ 3 dollar valet charge. come on folks, it’s 3 bucks and worth it! The little guy that moves the cars is a little older and works hard for you. just park there!
FOOD
Beware that if you order the grilled cheese and soup app you will be full and take your food home to go. That is was happened to me. I ordered the grilled cheese and the Tomato basil soup. and when a whole sandwich and cup of soup I was like WTF. and then I ordered a pizza (The Winner Winner with extra avocado) that was HUGE. So I had so much food left over at the end of my meal.
The drinks are ok. I ordered off of the drink menu, so they were the restaurants «specialty cocktails». they were potent but as far as flavor they lacked a little bit.
Their «Vegas Bomb» shots are a bit pricey if you ask me (9.50 really) my drink «The Perfect Pair» was .50 cents cheaper. interesting.
Our waitress was cool. she seemed to be the only waitress that night and was really working the room.
I will certainly be back, I enjoyed eating here!
