In Flight Running offers a non intimidating environment for beginners yet challenging enough for the most experienced runner. Whether you are learning the sport of running or shooting for that Boston qualifying time we can help «take your running to new heights» with professional coaching and training programs that minimize injury and get results. In Flight takes a holistic approach to running by including advice and seminars on strength training, cross training, flexibility, injury prevention and nutrition. Friendly coaches & staff, full fluid support at every group run, over 265 Houston area running routes and fun trail running road trips are just a few reasons runners love to train with us.
Programs are available to prepare runners for the 5K to Marathon distance with on-line training schedules provided to keep our athletes on track. Choose from our Marathon/Half marathon program, PR+ speed and hills interval training program or our No Boundaries 5K/10K program.
History
Established in 2004.
After catching the running bug in 1999, fitness trainer Michael Merlino trained for his first marathon. Along that journey he found that group training programs that truly catered to the personal needs of every skill level were lacking in the Greater Houston area. So after he coached on a volunteer basis for a couple of years with the Arthritis Foundation’s «Joints In Motion» marathon training program he founded In Flight Running in 2004. In Flight’s mission from the beginning had been to be a group run coaching program that welcomes runners of all skill levels with training that is none intimidating for beginners but challenging enough for more advanced runners. The program was named after the beauty of a runner in stride or «in flight» and Michael’s love for travel and taking the running adventure on the road any chance they gets.

Business Owner
Prior to becoming a fitness trainer, Michael worked as an employee benefits counselor for The Baylor College of Medicine, employee benefits manager for Houston Lighting & Power (now Reliant/Centerpoint Energy) and an HR/Benefits consultant to the South Texas Nuclear Power Plant in Bay City, Texas.
He owns Merlino Fitness and In Flight Running and has been a fitness trainer and running coach since 1997. He trains clients and runners at his private studio and and the running trails at Memorial Park, Rice University and Buffalo Bayou. He is also the founder and head coach of In Flight Running; a Houston area run coaching and marathon/half marathon training program. Michael spends all of his time coaching and training others on weight management, getting in shape, maintaining fitness and improving athletic performance. He is also a fitness and wellness consultant, speaker, writer and blogger.
