History

Established in 1918.

The History of the Houston Engineering and Scientific Society Club

In 1915, three pioneering Houston engineers, all employed by the City Engineering Department, envisioned a club of «good fellowship where engineers might meet to discuss new ideas.» This innovative idea grew, and on June 14, 1918, fifty engineers adopted by-​laws and elected officers to form the Houston Engineer’s Club.

In September 1939, the club was moved to the first floor of the Hadley Exchange Telephone Company building, located at 2615 Fannin Street. In May 1952, the Houston Engineer’s Club purchased the building and began renovations in May 1956. Wilson, Morris, Cain and Anderson Architects and Spaw-​Glass contractors performed the design and renovation of the building.

In May 1957, the name of the club was changed to the Houston Engineering & Scientific Society (H.E.S.S.) to more appropriately represent the organization’s goals. On May 1, 1958, the renovated building opened and dedication ceremonies were hel

Beautiful venue! I attended a breakfast here where a friend was being honored. Upon walking in it was like being in a well maintained upscale traditional style home with heavy wall & ceiling moldings, beautiful floors, and hallways lined with unimposing, tasteful wall hangings.
Breakfast was served buffet style with all the trimmings and food quality was comparable to an upscale breakfast establishment. I was so pleased with my visit and hope to have the opportunity to visit again.

I had my wedding at the HESS Club and it was fabulous! Everyone I dealt with was wonderful and the whole process went very smoothly. They knew how important this day was to me, my husband, and our family and they made sure to make it a special day for us. The food was amazing! I would highly recommend having your event here. Their website says, «Galleria’s hidden gem» and it truly is a gem!

I attended this venue for the Top 50 Black Professionals Awards Event. I will agree with Unilocaler David N. that the parking was a bit strange. I just parked alongside of the road and walked up to the building. From the outside I couldn’t really tell what it would look like on the inside because it looks like your typical office building on the outside. Once inside I was very impressed. The set-​up was very nice. It was a rather crowded event but the space was just enough that we didn’t feel trapped. The food was amazing and the staff at the Hess Club were great. They were very prompt with their service and polite. I wouldn’t mind attending another event here.

This place is AKA the HESS Club
I came here recently for a wedding reception. I didn’t know what to expect, it was off westheimer near the galleria, but near basically office buildings.
Parking and walking up to it was strange. Just didn’t feel like I was about to attend a wedding reception. But once you enter, it’s your typical banquet hall.
Overall, the place is ideal for smaller weddings, and decorations are all up to you and your designer, but this event looked nice, there are multiple rooms, and a bar.
