Hiram Butler Gallery

Tucked away in a beautiful, minimal wood house set in a little residential neighborhood just off of Washington is the best art gallery in Houston. Hiram Butler Gallery consistently has shows that rival some of New York’s best galleries. I’ve see pieces by Donald Judd, Richard Serra, Dan Buren, and Sol LeWitt here and every time I’ve visited, the shows have been beautifully curated. The pieces actually flow and create a conversation together. The attendants are always helpful and kind enough to give visitors privacy (don’t you just hate it when gallery attendants watch your every move as if they’re waiting for you to try and steal a 10 ft tall painting). All in all, I cannot recommend Hiram Butler highly enough. Their shows always have a stellar line-​up of artists and are very well thought out.

In a funky residential neighborhood just off Washington’s row of taquerias and clubs sits a quite wood house with a nice yard that served as a sculpture garden for some ghostly Joe Havel sculptures on our visit.
Placid inside serves as a perfect place to view art you might buy, if you’ve got some major cash. You can buy a Robert Rauschenberg or a Vernon Fisher, all top Texas modern artists.
The gallery assistant was intelligent, warm, friendly and sincere.
