About the DOWNTOWN Campus

First Methodist Houston’s Downtown Campus location is in the heart of the city at 1320 Main St. @ Clay. It is easily accessed from any area of Houston. Ample free parking is provided. This historic facility, built in 1910 on the «outskirts» of Houston, contains a beautiful Sanctuary with ornate stained glass windows that are complemented by an Aeolian-​Skinner pipe organ, built in Boston, which contains over 7,000 pipes.

These facilities are handicapped accessible with a wheelchair ramp located at the Clay Street entrance.

About the WESTCHASE Campus

With upbeat, inspiring worship services, the Westchase campus is the spiritual home to a growing number of people. Additionally, Wesley Academy, a private Christian school through the eighth grade, and Quillian Sports and Recreation ministry, provide meaningful opportunities for First Methodist Westchase to make a positive difference for Christ in people’s lives throughout west Houston.

About our Senior Pastor

After serving churches in south Texas and San Antonio, Dr. Wende was appointed to his present position in 2001 as senior pastor of First Methodist Houston.

Dr. Wende is a noted speaker and serves as contributing editor for Preaching Magazine. He has been recognized for his work in the areas of spiritual growth, evangelism, and mission outreach. In addition, he has served in numerous leadership positions in the United Methodist Church, including the Board of Ordained Ministry, the Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry, the Task Force on Evangelism, and election to the last six United Methodist General and Jurisdictional Conferences.

Dr. Wende has served as a Director of the Methodist Hospital of Houston, a Director of the Texas Methodist Foundation, a Trustee of Huston-​Tillotson University, a Trustee of Houston Christian High School, a Commissioner of the Methodist Home of Waco and Trustee of Texas Wesleyan College.

I started attending this church about a year ago — I had just moved to Houston and had visited several churches. After my first visit I decided to stay at First Methodist, mainly because everyone was so welcoming and kind, and there are a lot of young professionals that attend on a regular basis. There is a traditional service and also a contemporary service on the 6th floor called the Source which is attended by people of all different ages, races, and income levels — truly representative of our community and wonderful to see so many different people there passionate about serving each other and the city of Houston.

Have been a member at first Methodist at the dowtown campus for 2 years. This church is a mixed race church, and has multiple programs serving both our diverse community and the members. My husband and I visit multiple churches and found this church to be very welcoming. The Source comtmepory service is amazing, and their is also a Spanish language sevice at the same time and the more traditional. Many choices to help people to be in community that helps them see God.

I started attending here about 6 months ago when my husband got a job here as the Director of Small Groups, and feel like I’ve found an amazing home here in Houston. Since getting married about 2 and a half years ago we hadn’t found a church where we had a solid community, but since coming here we have been welcomed with open arms. We attend The Source, the alternative/​contemporary service on the 6th floor. When I walk in the main entrance on the 1st floor the people greeting for the traditional service make me feel welcome right away. The community at The Source is diverse and welcoming to everyone. I love the worship! And there are many ways to get plugged into deeper community. I’m in my mid-​20s and feel like this is a truly God-​seeking community for me. There’s really something for everyone at First!

We visited five churches before joining first Methodist. No question this was the friendliest church we visited. Many churches you can walk in and out without anyone anyone speaking. The worship team at the Source on the 6th floor is amazing.

Sad to see such a low review here based on an isolated misunderstanding. Please be aware that our security guards are only doing their jobs, and the implication that someone was mistreated because of their skin color is false. We are a very diverse church, both in congregation and staff. Those who come to worship at unusual times will be directed to the chapel. This is not an insult. The sanctuary is closed outside of scheduled worship because our building was nearly burned down by a homeless man who was alone in the sanctuary. Sadly, there have also been small, occasional instances of theft. As a church we make it a priority to minister to the needy, and with that comes a small measure of risk during the workweek. That is why we have security. I encourage anyone who is discouraged by the misleading review here to visit this church, meet our wonderful, diverse congregation, and hear the beautiful music. The spirit of God is strong in this place, and in the families that call it home. My family felt it the moment we stepped inside.

My mother, who is a non-​white Christian, walked into this church. As soon as she walked in she was confronted in an aggressive manner by the security guard «What are you doing here?» he asked. My mother, a lady in her late 60s, replied she would like to pray. The security guard said «You go over there» pointing away from the main area into the back in an unfriendly manner.
What is this, the 1950s? Sounds a lot like making non-​white people sit in the back of the bus. Sorry guys, the Civil Rights laws were signed into effect in the 1960s.
A house of God? I don’t think so. FAIL.

I was lucky enough to attend a wedding here. I must say it’s another one of Houston’s beautiful churches. The reception was just a walking distance away at the Petroleum club, so it made a perfect match for the ceremony. There is a huge parking lot across the street that we paid for both the ceremony and reception.
