If you want to connect with many great non-profits from Houston and Texas all at one time, you need to go to Earth Day HTX. Next year, if it’s after April; this year, if it’s before April. Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, The Arboretum, B-cycle(the red bikes), the Humane Society were some of the great organizations represented. It’s a great time to check in and see what they’re doing to improve YOUR life. You should sign up to help them help your life. Volunteer and donate! It’s also a great place to pick up free plants and trees. Saplings and sprouts. I got a couple of butterfly-friendly salvia(purple) that are starting to take off.(That’s not saying much — salvia grow super fast — but it’s super-exciting to watch them go.) They had milkweed(if you want to help the diminishing Monarch butterfly population), but ran out by the time I made my rounds. There seemed to be quite a few activities for the kittens. At one point, the U of H group walked past, led by a little girl with a giant weather balloon.

It’s been awhile since I’ve made it to Earth Day Houston! I remember when their used to be this huge concert with Sugar Ray! ahh those were the days! You can learn so much about what you can do for our planet, get some free plants and trees to put in your own yard! They even have great healthy food you can try out to add something new to your menu! Thankfully the rain held off, for the most part, and I think it was a great day!

This is my second time visiting Earth Day Houston. This event is free and is filled with lots of informational, eco-friendly tables. The last time here, I remembered I had the opportunity to hold a live snake. It was awesome! The event has street vendors, food trucks, and live music. It is usually hosted at Discovery Green’s large lawn and faces the George R. Brown Convention Center. Discovery Green itself is a beautiful place. It is has art sculptures, the Wortham Fountain, Synchronicity of Color to name two. Earth Day Houston is not just for children, it is also delightful for the whole family, friends, and if your one deep. Discovery Green events are annual and are always fun filled. Each vendor tent aim is to inform the community about positive and innovative ways of preserving the Earth or that benefits to you. To name a few vendors I saw were: Metro Bus, The Sierra Club, Unilocal,State Farm, La Subasta, ASPCA, Bike Houston, Houston Museum of Natural Science, University of Houston and lots more. Some vendors I never knew existed were there voicing their business. Free event with freebies! The HMNS was giving away free drives, U of H free t-shirt if you took the quiz, the Vital Allergy and Asthma center gave out coloring books, notepads, pens, and a bottle opener with a flashlight and tape measure. Centerpoint Energy gave out trees: Pine, Crêpe Myrtle and some other I think Birch, while Houston Parks and Recreation Dept. handed out free plants that were useful for butterflies and hummingbirds. The Mexican Milkweed was given away fairly quick, all was left was three different kinds of plants and other vendors gave out seedlings. The event was exciting, but I wish the Art Car parade wasn’t scheduled on the same day and at similar times.

This is one of my favorite FREE events in town. Discovery green holds something almost every weekend of the year but some are ticketed/priced but others are free. Some of the free ones are junk. But this event has a lot of fun activities. They bring music and performers along with many great vendors.
