Wilson Care Group

I would like to give this company 2.5 stars, but it seems that Unilocal will only allow 2 or 3 instead. I worked for this company in the later part of 2015 and while there are many positive things to say about the company there are a few negative ones that I experienced as an employee.
First off, from my experience, I was given wonderful clients to serve and their families were just as amazing. As an employee, WHC will ensure that have a steady schedule and allow you to up shifts pick as desired. However, the salary and per deim pay is not competitive to other agencies and there wasn’t a difference in pay (to my knowledge) whether you were certified or not.
Secondly, again from my own experience, the schedulers there didn’t provide me with the information to provide proper tailored care and directions to homes/​parking instructions to the clients’ residences. When you as an employee are not provided with the proper information it makes us look unprofessional and inadequate and reflects a bad image of the company. I brought this issue up to the schedulers, and all I received was an «Oh no… I’m so sorry…» … but it kept happening.
I don’t want this to be a negative post because I think this is a great option for families in need care for their loves. Wilson Home Care caregivers have warm hearts and helping hands to provide the best of care that they possibly can. My prospective in this review is merely from the vantage as an employee.
There is need for improvement to assist those working in the field from those working in the office.

I used to work for this company about 4 years ago. Like any other business there’s ups and downs. I liked this company because there is always open, fill-​in shifts to pick up some extra hours and money. Down side is the pay is too little compared to most other agencies. Most agencies start at $ 12 while Wilson starts at $ 10, that was my main reason for leaving. But other than that they are good. When I ended up in the hospital they contacted me for updates and when I found out I had cancer the owner of Wilson sent me a card with a nice note and had the office sign it, they also called every so often just to see how I was doing.

My mother has been living in the Kailua Wilson Senior Living residence since October of 2014. Mom is mobile, but suffers from dementia. There are other residents who are not mobile, but their minds are working properly. It is amazing to watch the way they interact with her. They are so understanding of her shortcomings and she provides them with fun and a loving touch.
She is finally living her life to the fullest. The home has two wonderful chefs who prepare meals that mom enjoys. When she was living in her own home, she refused to eat so many things and now she is eating a well balanced and interesting meals. In addition to providing meals for the residents, the chefs are so loving that they provide that extra touch throughout the day.
The caregivers are so loving and they give her constant attention and love. There is an activity director who plans things to stimulate the residents and the housekeeper is so talented that she fills in the gaps with wonderful craft projects. I can’t believe the unique projects she comes up with. I have not seen one person who works there that doesn’t show love and concern for each one of the residents.
They have visits from therapy dogs and inspirational speakers come to visit. Once a month there is a woman who comes to teach them hula and sings Hawaiian songs with the residents. They have karaōke two or three times a weak, and bingo a couple of times a week. They do yoga and tai chi.
The house is beautiful and feels like a real home and that is the way the owner and staff want each client to feel. I sleep well at night knowing that my mom is being so well taken care of.

This home has been an amazing place for my grandmother who has been living there for quite some time. She enjoys the many daily activities that are offered, as well as the staff and the other residents. The staff has always been 100% professional and caring and the other residents provide a pleasant social atmosphere. She couldn’t be in better hands! So nice that a place like this exists on the Windward side.

My mother had been under the care of Wilson Homecare (WH) for approximately one year in her home before my elder sisters moved her to Wilson Senior Living on Kaneohe Bay Drive in October 2014. My mother suffers from Alzheimer’s but she is mobile and fun and full of life and loves to spend as much time as possible away from the care home. My mother has unfortunately been in the middle of a family dispute that has caused her wellbeing to be put on the back burner while the family dispute has become the primary concern. WH has chosen to act unprofessionally to say the least remaining involved in our family issues and has attempted to keep me from my mother even though my elder sisters and I have a legal court ordered stipulation allowing me unrestricted visits and outings with my mother between the hours of 8 am and 7 pm. WH has gone as far as to threaten to call the police on me twice, actually called the police on me once, although the police seemed baffled why WH was contacting them since there was no legal issue, attempted to restrict my visits with my mother to the care home with no outings, threatened to stop me from seeing my mother at all, to directing their care providers to highly monitor my conversations with my mother when I am at Wilson Senior Living per an internal memo to their entire staff that I saw laying on the WSL kitchen counter. All of these threats were either left on my voice message or in emails.
On one occasion I had to ask for a police escort, per my attorney’s advice, to escort my mother out of the care home for an outing that I am legally allowed to do because WH was attempting to restrict my visits to the care home contrary to my mother’s desires and our legal and binding stipulation. WH has decided to take their instructions from my eldest siblings that are contrary to our legal stipulation and are participating in attempting to keep my mother from one of her own children. I have had a TRO filed against me by my sisters to attempt to keep me from my mother for five years but it was dismissed because there were no grounds. Unfortunately my elder siblings continue to attempt to restrict my visits and WH has chosen to cooperate with my mother’s eldest daughters who have no legal grounds to restrict my time with my mother. I have written to Shelley Wilson on numerous occasions regarding this situation and she has never responded to any of my complaints or concerns even though I have made her aware of what her care home is doing.
In December 2014, I went to pick up my mother for an outing and prior to arriving I had called Wilson Senior Living to notify the caregiver that I would be taking her out. I was told by the caregiver that my mother was going on another outing at 1 pm so I said I would pick her up at 9:30 am. After driving from Honolulu to Kailua I was told that the 1 pm outing had been changed to 11 am. I asked why I was not contacted prior to my arrival since I had driven from town to pick up my mother. It made no sense that Wilson Senior Living caregivers know how to contact me to threaten calling the police but can not call me for a change in my mother’s schedule. Not only did the caregiver fail to notify me of the shortened visit with my mother the caregivers could not find the sign out sheet for about ten minutes while the clock was ticking on my already shortened visit.
It is unbelievable to me that WH has chosen to get involved in a family dispute at the expense of my mother’s wellbeing. This is a completely unprofessional care home facility that has chosen to get involved in legal issues between family and have completely disregarded putting my mother first! This is suppose to be a professional organization but it has been acting in such an unprofessional way that I am concerned that if WH can openly harass and threaten a family member for no legal reason then this home care facility is capable of doing anything… I filed a Better Business Bureau complaint but was recently notified that Wilson Homecare failed to respond to their numerous attempts to contact Wilson Homecare. I give this company minus five stars and warn any one thinking of placing a loved one at one of their facilities to think twice before doing so.
I received a comment from Ms. Wilson’s assistant, Jared, after posting my complaints on Unilocal. Unfortunately Ms. Wilson is only now claiming to be interested in my complaints after over a year and a half of attempting to contact her directly by phone, copied her on emails between her Director
and me, and direct emails to Ms. Wilson with no response. I even recently filed a complaint through the Better Business Bureau and was notified that their numerous attempts to contact Ms. Wilson were unsuccessful. If Ms. Wilson was truly concerned about my complaints why did she ignore my numerous past requests for her assistance? No care home should dismiss concerns from family members without even talking with that family member.

First and foremost I would like to thank Wilson Homecare and their wonderful team for all they had done for my grandma. We hired Wilson on a temporary basis because grandma needed some extra assistance around the house. She lived alone and she was in her 90’s. Grandma was very independent and was not open to the idea of having someone come in to help her with some of her every day needs; she was stubborn. Wilson was able to find a caregiver who met and exceeded all of our family’s needs and wants. They were also able to offer us some possible caregivers that were bilingual; grandma spoke Chinese. Once she got used to the idea of having someone around the house helping her, she opened up to the regular caregiver. This was a great opportunity for our family to put aside some of the worries we had. The caregiver would take grandma out for daily walks to Chinatown so she could get her roast pork and shoyu chicken. The caregiver would sit there and listen to all my grandma’s stories about being a young Chinese girl and all the things she had done throughout her 90 something years. The caregiver even told my aunty how cute she thought grandma was. I know towards the end, grandma truly appreciated having someone there for her to help with things and just to listen. It was not easy for us to let her live on her own. With all of the adults working and all her grandkids growing up, we really wanted to enjoy our time with her as family members rather than care takers. Sadly to say, grandma passed a couple of weeks ago. She was 95 and still kicking until the day she died. Wilson had been such a great help and still continues to be a great support system.
The reason why I dropped everything to post this review was because our family just received a card from Wilson Homecare expressing their sympathy for our loss and their continued assistance, if needed. I thought that was the most touching thing, to take the time to hand write a card and express their positive feelings towards our family and grandmother. No amount of words can express how grateful our entire family has been and will continue to be.
All I can say is THANK YOU WILSON HOMECARE!!!

I have mixed feelings about this company. I know they were founded upon the ideals that quality long-​term home healthcare is key to safe recovery.
I also know there were scheduling conflicts and certain periods when we would call them and not get any response. One caregiver was late her first day. She apologized, saying she «unexpectedly» got a call in the morning saying «go here» without much other detail and she had a hard time finding our home. While this caregiver was friendly and approachable, she was not very professional. She sat next to my mom all day and didn’t do much unless she was asked specifically. All she wanted to do was make friends with me and talk about boys, so I tried to stay away during the hours she worked so that she’d be focused. But that was hard because I wanted to spend whatever time I had left with my mom, well, with my mom. She also asked me at one point why our house was so small. And said one of the family pictures we have is really deceiving because I used to be skinny and pretty and now I’m dumpy and look like a different person. When we had enough of these little comments and called the company, I guess they talked to her about it because the very next day, she came over and was very proactive and paid close attention to my mom and even did some light cleaning around the house. We had this caregiver assigned to us 5 days a week. Oh, and she mentioned to me after a few days that she didn’t know my mom had cancer. she thought my mom was pregnant. What? My dad told her on her first day here, so I guess she wasn’t paying attention. And either Wilson didn’t tell her my mom’s condition, or she wasn’t paying attention then, either.
The other two days, we had another caregiver come over. I really liked her. She handled my mom with such care that my mom specifically asked us if we could replace the other girl with her. Unfortunately, we couldn’t. She looked after my mom, did some light cleaning and when there wasn’t anything to be done, she sat holding my mom’s hand. She followed the medication schedule we had provided, unlike the first person who would approach us and ask, «Isn’t Miss supposed to take a pill now?». Yes, that is why we set aside a pill that said 10:00 am on it.
When my mom passed away, we called the company to tell them and they said they’d give us the next few days to ourselves and they’d show up later in the week to collect some of the supplies they had left at the house. So that was fine. Until Wednesday, when caregiver #2 (the one who really connected with my mom) showed up at the door. No one had told her my mom passed away! We told her then, so of course she was upset. But then I felt bad for having to send her home. Hopefully they found another patient for her to work with. I would have hated for her to miss a day of work because they forgot to tell her not to come.
I know the company cannot necessarily 100% guarantee the professionalism of their caregivers, but there was such a huge difference between caregivers 1 and 2, and at times it seemed like the company was only responsive when it was convenient that I’m not totally sure I’d recommend them for long-​term healthcare again. I think as long as you are given the opportunity to interview and/​or choose your caregiver then you’ll be okay.
