Good deal if working on budget. Not new cars so don’t expect that. I had red Geo tracker that took me around the islands for a week and only refueled once. This is not budget or hertz, this is rent a wreak on a budget. It looked like they had some jeeps and convertibles but I was lookin for a deal and I got one. Good place to rent a beater to get you around the island.

My friend and I rented a car from this company. We got picked up by a dude who was very unprofessional. Not only was he smoking a cigar in the car (that smelt awful) but he also made sexually inappropriate comments toward my friend and I on our way to the office. When we checked into the office the person who picked us up told my friend that we needed to put a $ 300 deposit on her card and was going charge her $ 203 in cash up front. My friend was never told about a deposit over the phone and we were confused on why we had to pay the $ 203 in cash at that moment instead of just doing a deposit then paying for the car when we returned it (like other rental companies). We were not upset about the deposit or the price, but we would have liked to know everything that was going to be charged/​held up front before hand. The whole situation seemed a little shady, but we went with it anyway… when we got the car, there were scratches and dents all over it. The inside was clean and at this point we just wanted to get away from this dude. To top it all off, once we hit the highway the car that we were given started to over heat and brake down on us. When we called the company for help the same asshole who had picked us up answered the phone (awesome). He was difficult to deal with but ended up bringing us a newer/​nicer car. Yes these guys are cheap, but I would have gladly paid the extra money to NOT deal with this guy and the situation that happened.

Full Disclosure: I’m writing this WARNING to spare everyone the stress they have caused me. There is a reason that they are priced so low.
To start, the cars are old, damaged, smelly, and dirty. They gave me a car with no A/​C and I had to bring it back. The other car was even worse, but I needed something last minute and the good places were sold out. The drama started while I was trying to get out of a tight parking spot, I tapped a guy that was parked illegally behind me. The guy I tapped wasn’t upset about it because there was just a little damage to the paint and I’m fully insured via Geico. We got the police report and went on with our lives.
When I got back, I told Sam the rental guy, that I got a police report and called Geico since I have a policy with them. Sam started saying that I had to pay him $ 900 «because the car was damaged» despite the fact that Geico had not done their audit yet. The he said he would take $ 600 but only in cash. My father is also my attorney, so I told Sam that I’d consult with him to see the legality of it and get back to him.
When I got home 1 hour later, I see that Sam charged me $ 900 on my card, and when I called him, he said it was because I «damaged» his car. (Please note that in Hawaii this is NOT legal. A rental place cannot charge a driver for damages to a vehicle before the insurance companies make a determination. If this happens to you, let your insurance and credit card people know ASAP!). When Geico did their audit a few days ago, they found that the damage VIP was claiming could not possibly have been done by me. VIP’s claim was rejected and the only person who got paid was the guy I tapped.
Please, PLEASE, PLEASE do not use this company for car rentals. These people are clearly scammers and frauds, and I plan on taking every legal action possible against them. Go to a reputable place!!!

Worst smelling broken down pieces of junk! First car broke down waited 2 hours for another car and they brought a smelly Impalla that ha a check Engine light on! Every car they have needs work! Good luck… Their customer service skills are not present!

This place has cheap cars that were probably bought from the national car rental places. The cars are older, beat up, but work well enough. I went with them because they were cheap and there was no line. The owner turned out to be a very nice man once you spoke with him.
I rented two cars – a Nissan sedan of some type and a Dodge Caravan. Each was probably about 10 years old, but they ran great and so did their a.c.
The best part about their cars? I got asked many times while driving them if I was a local; you won’t look like a tourist so that’s a plus!

I would call this business «Rent a Wreck» instead of Rental Car.
The car I rented was old, the key-​less entry didn’t work, the front license plate was falling off and the service engine light was illuminated. Despite being reassured that the car was «just serviced» when we took the car on the freeway at 60mph, the steering wheel shimmied so badly we had to slow down to keep control over the car. Perhaps the fact that the car had 115K miles on it should have tipped me off.
The company’s «solution» was to give me another car. But this car also had the «service engine» light on, over 62K miles on it, not to mention the terrible cigarette holes burned into the drivers seat and surrounding upholstery.
Any cost savings that would tempt you into using this company should quickly be discounted by the lack of safety and service of these old «wrecks» they are trying to pawn off on the customers.
Although they DID refund most of my $$, they charged me $ 75 for the day – despite the fact that the car was on Empty when I got it and I spent $ 60 to fill the gas tank.
DEFINITELY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY!

NEVER RENT FROM HERE! I called to make a reservation for a compact for 1 week and the owner quoted me $ 169.95 plus tax which was $ 50 more than what it says online. He told me those were the online prices and that I would need to email in order to get those prices, so I did. I then received a response two days later quoting me the prices had changed and it was now $ 169.95 plus tax. I called the next day and spoke with an employee since it was the weekend and the owner was not working. The employee told me that he (the owner) sets the prices at whatever he wants and it changes from day to day. I called back on Monday to see if I could talk him down to the online listed price and he told me to send a new email requesting the reservation and to pick up the vehicle on Wednesday at the online price. When I showed up on Wednesday he could not find the reservation and wanted $ 199.95 for a mid-​size since they were out of compacts. I told him what he could do with his reservation and walked away. I live in Hawaii so I have no problem taking an extra day to find a better car rental company but I feel in this situation many tourist would have no choice but to take the increased not agreed upon price. VIP Car Rentals is a dishonest company of crooks. NEVER RENT FROM HERE

I had been emailing them about our reservation for 2 weeks and even called when our flight was delayed — when we got there, they didn’t even have the car saying they didn’t take reservations … then they got s van and changed the price from 70 a day to 100 a day!!! We didn’t have any other choice since we needed a van for my geandfather’s wheelchair and everyone else was sold out.
My recommendation — DO NOT USE THEM! THEY ARE DISHONEST…

Rental car with FIRST COME FIRST SERVE?
I am looking for rental car in waikiki, found this car rental. They ask me for my info and date or my reservation… they put me on hold… they a guy pick up and said. ohh so you only want to rent for 1 day… sorry our rental is FIRST COME FIRST SERVE?
Wow since when there is a FIRST COME FIRST SERVE basis… will not use this kind of RENTAL car at all… not only the car is fishy (base other reviewer) but the service is the same

I would recommend that if you wanted to have a wonderful vacation, stay away from these guys. They are crooks! Dishonest and greedy and their word doesnt mean a damn thing. one of their renters hit my car and im still waiting for them to fix it or submit the claim to their insurance agent. Its been two months. Im going to keep writing a review until I get some satisfaction. Hopefully, it will deter people from giving them any bussiness. Jerks! One star– not even.

DO NOT RENT FROM THESE PEOPLE! I used the VIP Car Rental website to make my reservation. The website clearly says «Free Airport and Hotel Pickup». When I filled out the form on the VIP Car Rental Website, there was no area to specifically request a pickup at the airport. When I arrived in Honolulu, I called VIP Car Rental to ask where to go for pickup, the a gentleman told me I have to go to their location in Honolulu (234 Beachwalk, Honolulu). I asked how I was supposed to get there, and he said take a shuttle or cab. When I arrived at VIP Car Rental, I told the gentleman that their website advertises free airport pickup, and I had to pay $ 50 for a round trip shuttle (2 people). I asked if he would reimburse me for the shuttle or discount my rental. He refused to do either and told me I should have requested an airport pickup. I told him there was no specific area indicating I should do so on their electronic form, and he didn’t care. I would never rent from this agency again, nor would I recommend them.

If you’re looking for a high-​end, fancy drive-it-like-it’s-a-rental vehicle than this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for the cheapest way to get from point A to point B and back again, and it doesn’t matter if it’s in a smelly Nissan Sentra or a rusty Geo Tracker than this place is your soulmate!
Based on my rating I’m sure you can guess which kind of customer I was. All I needed was the cheapest compact car they had for a week while my brother and friends visited. We got the smelly Nissan Sentra and the boyfriend ended up being the main driver of it since he is over 25 and could use his own insurance (if you are under 25 but over 18 I believe you must pay for the rental company’s insurance).
Because we paid with a Navy Federal Check Card (can be used as a credit card/​debit card) the owner said he’d have to take out a deposit of $ 300 (plus the weekly rate for the rental) until the check card got cleared with the credit union. He told us that sometimes those check cards take longer to clear so this was just a way to make sure VIP Car Rentals wouldn’t be waiting for their payment. At first we weren’t so sure about this situation because our cards usually go through the same day, but we decided it was worth the deposit to have the vehicle. Thankfully not long after the card cleared my boyfriend received the $ 300 deposit back. VIP Car Rentals definitely stands by their word and we appreciate that.
Now onto the negatives! Of course you already know that the car was smelly (reminiscent of rotten eggs; was better with the air conditioning off and the windows open), but it was also difficult to drive. My BF said it took awhile for the car to accelerate, so instead of 0 – 60 in 3.5 it was probably more like 0 – 60 in 9.5, haha. Now if these things along with the seen-​better-​days-​exterior don’t bother you, then you are already on your way to being a VIP customer! Pun definitely intended.
Also in response to reviewer Albert A. (who may or may not be a real person based on only having one review from 2010), I have to point out that there was a large sign at the front desk clearly stating not to return the rental during non-​business hours or else risk being charged with a $ 50 fee. Perhaps at the time you rented from them they didn’t have this rule blatantly displayed like they do now, but I’m sure they mentioned it in the contract you signed.
VIP Car Rentals’ business hours are 7am-​5pm.

Rented from them for 2 days during our stay in Honolulu. The rental location was very close by to where we were staying and there were no lines when we got there at 8am in the morning. Seems like they didn’t have a huge selection of cars, but I just wanted a compact for the two of us to get around for the next two days, nothing fancy. The price was pretty cheap compared to dollar and budget. For 2 days, total came out to $ 114. The rate was $ 40 per day, not sure if the rest was taxes or a charge for us being under 25. He asked us if we were under 25 and we said yes and he asked us how old and we said 22. He didn’t say anything after that besides getting the papers and giving us the total so who knows. We had a nissan which was clean and the AC and radio was working and it got it places so thats all that matters.

Read your contract. Don’t park on their lot overnight to return the car in the morning. They’ll charge you $ 50. They don’t tell you up front. This people are very sneaky. They’ll just rip you off any way they can.

I rented from this place on my last trip back home to Honolulu. The rates are very reasonable. I wasnt 25 then but i wasnt stuck with a ridiculous surcharge for my young age. definitely a plus.
the rental process was quick and easy and i was able to get my car in under 30 minutes. i saved a bunch of money. i definitely would rent from them again.

Like the previous reviewer said, It’s a small rental place with a small selection of cars to choose from, but from the looks of the cars you could probably tell already. I rented a Chevy Tracker which was 15 for the first day and 30 for every day after that.
I even brought the car back the a day late and the person working did not charge me an extra day or any late charges for that matter. the car was cheap and got us to where we needed to be. Great service, even though the cars are a little out dated, mines had 240,000 miles on it. but i had no problems with it.

We had a choice– two day rental for over $ 100 (for an economy) from Dollar or $ 83 for a Chevy Tracker (yea, it was a stick, with 60k, one of the gears was a little funky) from VIP.
The Tracker (driving over to the North Shore beaches!) was a lot more fun!
The gal and guy at the Beach Walk branch were great, in and out, no problems. Had it back before 9 AM the third morning and returning a car anywhere has never been quicker or easier.
One nice touch– a local politician’s bumper sticker vs. a car rental sticker, which didn’t scream «tourist» quite so loudly.
We’ll use VIP again.

You get what you pay for at this place.
It’s a very small rental place with not a huge selection or great cars for that matter, but from the looks of the cars you could probably tell already. I rented a Chevy Tracker which had not top as well as no option to add a top. Don’t leave any personal belongings in this vehicle as it’s very easy to steal. But we did blend it with most of the other cars in Hawaii and the car was cheap and got us to where we needed to be. If you want luxury or plan to leave things in your car for anytime then don’t go here because these are basic cars to get you from place to place.

«We traveled to Hawaii for about a week in in october 2008. I always have rented cars in my life but I had the worst experience at VIP car rentals in Hawaii. We had a car that looked ok from outside but inside it was horrible, rusty, it was licking on the rainy days and for your safety forget it. The mirrors were moving on bumps up and down the car has no breaks, there is a big gap on the steering wheel. I’m just warning people who’s never been to hawaii, not to rent a car there. And The staff there didn’t care at all about how we felt, they know they still rent the cars no matter what.
