I first came across the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii(known as VSH) when I stumbled upon their flyer at Down to Earth one day. The flyer promoted a free talk at the Ala Wai Golf course, hosted by a famous gastroenterologist, Dr. Ankur Jai. Though neither me nor my boyfriend are vegetarians, we decided to check it out, nothing beats free right? Let me tell you, these talks hosted by the VSH are a great great tool for the community. Not only did I take away many important lessons about food and the impact of what we consume, I learned vegetarian or vegan doesn’t necessarily fit into a cookie cutter stereotype either. For example, the Doctor who spoke, Dr. Jai said that his research provides some evidence that consuming no animal products at all may be easiest on the human digestive system, BUT he also mentioned that he too is only human, and consumes dairy and eggs from time to time. As the largest nonprofit Vegetarian Society in the nation, VSH is able to host a variety of talks and events to reach out the community. For the month of October, we were fortunate enough to have a lecture by Dr. T. Colin Campbell– lead researcher and author of «The China Study». As predicted, his talk at Ala Wai Golf course was filled to capacity. The following night, Govinda’s Vegetarian Buffet hosted a meet and greet dinner for $ 19 a person(check their calendar for monthly events ) Though many of the members have known each other for years and tend to stick in cliques, but I do encourage anyone curious about vegetarianism, veganism or just want to start eating better. The VSH offers many free resources online and at these events. TIP: Talks at the Ala Wai Golf Course include free *vegan* refreshments at the end!

Vegetarians and vegans do exist in Hawaii! I kid. I was so happy to meet another vegan Vietnamese vixen at a vegan meetup event a while back. That other vixen actively volunteers and works with this«society.» I decided to join this society to support its efforts. VSH holds monthly lectures featuring guest speakers on different topics; the lectures are open to the general public. It also hosts dine-outs with the guest speakers. As a member of VSH, you get discounts to quite a few local vegetarian-friendly restaurants and businesses like Down to Earth.
