Thomas J Kane III, MD

I went through a referral from my Doctor and was diagnosed by a Ortopedic Doctor who made me wait for over an hour and then spent barely a few minutes with me. He dismissed my questions and stood by his diagnosis. He claimed that you can get a torn rotator cuff by just getting old!!! And he came to this conclusion after only looking at an x-​ray of my shoulder. I immediately looked for another diagnostic opinion.
I was referred to Dr. Thomas Kane by a good friend and was told that he opted out of the Medicare and other insurance plans, so, your office visits won’t be covered. However, his office will file for any procedures that need to be done that are covered by your health providers. Dr. Kane and his staff are extremely caring and understanding. The first thing you will notice when you arrive for your appointment is that there are usually only three or four patients in the waiting area. The other thing that will surprise you is that Dr. Kane will see you at your scheduled appointment time. You do get the feel of being in the presence of a doctor that truly cares about his patients and takes the time to explain his diagnosis and the procedures that need to be done to correct your orthopedic issue. He listens and answers your questions until he is sure that you fully understand his diagnosis and treatments.
I brought a copy of my X-​Rays (from the earlier doctor) and gave them to Dr. Kane to examine. He noted that there was no structural issue with my bones that could be causing the pain in my shoulder. He sent me to get an MRI done to find out what was causing the pain. On my follwup appointment, Dr. Kane sat with me and explained that I had a «frozen shoulder» which needed a procedure called an «MUA» (after hearing what needed to be done, I think it might be an acronym for Manipulation of the Upper Arm). Dr. Kane made sure that I was satisfied with his diagnosis and was ready to proceed with the pocedure. He schedule it to be done at Queen’s Medical Out-​Patient on a Thursday and had me scheduled for Physical Therapy the following morning. After finishing seven sessions of P/​T, I had complete range of motion in my left arm with no pain. I continue to follow the stretching and strengthening exercises that the P/​T reccommended.
Dr. Kane is excellent diagnostician and surgeon. If you want to get treated and cared for by an understanding and compassionate doctor, I highly reccommend that you see Dr. Thomas Kane. You will not be disappointed. I wish I could give Dr. Kane ten stars because five stars just doesn’t reflect how great of a doctor he is.

I injured my right knee while exercising about 10 weeks ago. After about 2 weeks of icing and resting with limited improvement, decided that I needed to go see a specialist. Did not want to go through the hassle of seeing my primary care doctor first, so just checked out Unilocal!Contacted Dr. Kane’s office (Jane was very helpful) and scheduled an appointment within a couple of days. After examining my knee, Dr. Kane recommended having an MRI done. Jane scheduled the MRI for me and Dr. Kane reminded me to make sure that I get a DVD copy of the MRI scan for his review. This became very important since the radiologist had determined that the MRI showed no damage to the ligaments or meniscus. At my follow-​up appointment with Dr. Kane, he reviewed the MRI scan and said that based on his experience seeing so many knees in his years of practice, that he disagreed with the radiologist’s report of no damage. He could see in the MRI (and showed me) what looked like a tear in my lateral meniscus. Anyway, today I just had my 6-​day post-​op examination. Dr. Kane showed me pictures of the arthroscopic surgery and the tear that the radiologist missed. It was pretty significant (20% of the meniscus removed) and was folded back into the joint! BTW, recovery is going better than I expected. I only missed one day work (in hindsight I think I should have taken another day off!). Off crutches within 2 days and I did not take a single pain med for the knee post-​op. Looking forward to a full recovery in a few weeks (and I’m kinda old too 53!). I would recommend Dr. Kane to my friends and family without any reservation. And, would like to thank Dr. Kane and his staff for their experience and expertise. Mahalo!

Dr Kane and his staff are angels sent by God! I’m on vacation from Tennessee and developed knee problems. I spent Sunday in the ER with no relief. Jane managed to fit me into Dr Kane’s busy Monday schedule and again later in the week — once to treat the problem and again to recheck before I fly home.
Everyone was gentle, warm, kind, knowledgeable, and attentive. The office was clean and quiet. I couldn’t ask for a better experience. Thank you so much, Dr Kane, for being a wonderful doctor and having the best staff available!

Dr. Kane and his staff (Wendy and Jane) are dedicated professionals with friendly, genuine concern for their patients; even those of us who have «control» issues and are quite frankly, «terrified» of surgical procedures. I sought treatment because I couldn’t straighten my leg and often times walked «like a gorilla» after sitting for a period of time. At my first appointment I was sent for x-​rays and subsequently for MRI’s. The x-​rays were done immediately, the MRI scheduled/​performed and follow-​up appointment at Dr. Kane’s office were done within a week. The results; requiring surgical procedure to correct the problem, were explained thoroughly to me (and my supportive husband) and scheduling was done at the second appointment. Talk about efficient! (*wondering about my diagnosis? I know, you’d think knee but it was actually a hip injury). I highly recommend Dr. Kane; he is an extraordinary man and an incredible surgeon. I am two-​months post surgery and feel terrific! Truly blessed to have found them.

I had a total knee replacement 8 ½ years ago and continue to see Dr. Kane once a year. He and his staff are awesome! They treat you like a member of their family. I have complete trust in Dr. Kane and never feel he is rushed. He takes pride in having a very caring practice and it really shows.

I have a torn meniscus for over 10 yrs and didn’t do anything about it because it wasn’t bothering me too much. Recently my knee has been hurting. I read the excellent reviews that Dr. Kane has and made an appointment. 2 days later, I was seen, x-​rayed, diagnosed and treated. The staff was great… especially the receptionist and Dr. Kane. they were so personable and down to earth… I’m glad I chose wisely!

Got an appointment, followed his plan for treatment and within 2 weeks, had surgery to correct problem and recovered at home. I am now on the road to being pain free with a quality of life that I’ve lost for a few years. Dr Kane is such a wonderful person, so nice to talk story with, laugh and share a hug. If you are looking for a surgeon who can relieve your bone and joint pain while treating you with respect and compassion, you want to see Dr. Kane. He is kind and considerate and will explain your situation in understandable, plain terms. He is a talented surgeon with his feet on the ground (or on a surfboard), who will not rush you or belittle you. He opened his schedule to see me on an urgent basis the day after I called with extreme hip pain. He stayed late on a Friday to look at my MRI images and to ease my pain. His nurse Wendy is kind and very helpful. I trust them both.
As a medical professional myself, I have high standards for healthcare. Dr. Kane is the orthopedic surgeon for me. He can help you, too!

Dr. Kane was awesome with my mom’s total knee replacement about five years ago so I thought I’d go see him when I messed up my knee doing some housework. He’s just as amazing has he was back then! His staff are so friendly (even though I showed up 5 minutes late to my first appointment… you know how work is, hard to get away when you need to!) and they take care of everything for you! His bedside manner is AWESOME! I’ve had a lot of problems with my hip from a previous car accident and every doctor I’ve seen just manipulates your leg and doesn’t pay attention to if its hurting you or not (and I’ve gone to the best in LA! Cedars and UCLA), Dr. Kane was watching my face as much as he was watching my knee and apologized when he saw me wince.
I will make a side note here, and to me it’s not a big one since he’s the best, but I think people deserve to know this (and they’re very open about it). Dr. Kane HATES insurance companies (probably as much as I do…) so when it comes to HIS work you have to pay his fee upfront and then the office files the claim on your behalf and you are reimbursed that way, but just be aware that it won’t be 100% of what you paid him. The costs aren’t HUGE considering you’re getting the best care in the state of Hawaii. I just went in and it was around $ 250 and I’ll probably get $ 170 back from my insurance, so I think it’s worth it. MRIs and x-​rays are normal (you give them your insurance and you pay a co-​pay if you need to) and then if you have to have surgery everything is how it would be for any other doctor except for his surgical fee which is a few thousand, but again, they file claims for you and you’ll receive the majority of it back (all depending on what your insurance benefits are)
all in all i think it’s 100% worth it!

Dr. Thomas Kane is the finest orthopedic surgeon in Hawaii. His staff, Wendy and Patrice, are equally outstanding, helpful and a joy to deal with. Dr. Kane has performed over 6000 hip and total knee replacements in his career.
One caveat, Dr. Kane has opted out of Medicare and if you engage his services, you will get no Medicare benefits for his fees. His staff will file a claim for your private insurance as a non-​participating physician. Your hospital bill for the surgery is not affected and you will recieve full Medicare and supplement/​secondary medical insurance beneftis.
If you wish the best care, this should not be an obstacle but you will have to front the expenses for his surgical skills.

I called for an appointment about a painful knee and he was available 2 days later! After examining xrays that they took on the spot he diagnosed a bone chip from a previous injury. He was very present and clear with the possible cures. Due to my plans to move away in two weeks he prescribed a self applied non-​steroidal fluid that has worked wonders. Everything was expensive but reasonable within the framework and its effectiveness. I had a similar condition 4 years before and it was far more expensive with subsequent treatments and physio rehab in the course of 3 months.

Dr. Kane and his staff are pretty awesome. Pleasant, friendly, and helpful. Probably the best medical experience I’ve had to date.
