Terra Waialae 10th

My daughter and I have been going to Yosuke since he came to Hawaii and followed him from the Pensacola branch to the Kaimuki location. He is awesome, takes his time and always does quality work. Our hair cut and color always comes out exactly how we want it. He also does a great job when my daughter needs her hair set for various high school functions. Thank you, Yosuke and Keiji!

Big M-​A-​H-​A-​L-​O to Yosuke (Kobayashi-​san), most awesome director of Terra Waialae! This review is for both my daughter and son (18y, 19y) who had their hair styled here.
Daughter calls at lunch to say that she couldn’t get a same-​day appointment and what should she do (cry…). So I start pursuing the internet, and lo and behold, there’s a link to Terra. My son hears me and asks if he can get his hair trimmed too (they both had the same event coming up). She calls and is able to nab an appointment that afternoon, not just for one, but two! Unreal, right?! Location seemed great as it is close to UH Mānoa where they go to school.
My daughter’s hair is long, to her waist, and super thick. She wanted to donate her hair to Locks of Love, but Yosuke expertly explained that she had varied layers and lots of split ends and that it would be best to get everything into a healthy, more even cut allowing the lengths grow out. She really loved that he cut a longer bang around the side of her face which nicely frames her features. He was a little surprised that she hadn’t cut her hair in over a year, but I’m going to be straight up when I say that if you have a larger fam bam like me, then you know that cutting hair every three months is not feasible and how important it is to find a stylist who can create a cut that will last longer.
My son has really, really straight, thick hair. Yosuke easily took his haircut to the next level, by cleaning it up and trimming the longer layers into a style that frames his face better without making him look «boxy». Nice!
Overall we were there about 90 minutes (1 hour for my daughter, 30 min for my son). Total damage was $ 115 for BOTH ($ 50/​$ 60 based on age) which included shampoo and blow-​dry services. Plus an extra $ 25 for tip (for both) and we were set! Yosuke was nice enough to take my personal check, since I had just lost my debit card and did not have enough cash on me. I parked on the street not realizing that they have their own parking lot, but it wasn’t a big deal since when we got there it was already 5 pm, so street parking was fairly easy to secure.
My young adults really loved Yosuke’s style and I’m definitely taking my younger daughter (16y) to see him as well as a «treat me» day. It’s been really, really, really, really hard to find someone who our whole family can be happy about, but I think we did it. Extra plus is that they are right down the street from Modern Nails (Stacy & Nelson) whom our family has been seeing for over ten years!

I cut my hair with Yosuke when he first came from Japan and was working at the Pensacola Street location. When I came back to Hawaii after studying abroad, I found out that he had moved to Kaimuki. This is my go to place to cut my hair when I’m not in Asia. There are only two people working here– Yosuke and his assistant Keiji. Both of them are really friendly, and we usually just talk about mobile game apps. I never leave disappointed because I know I can simply show a picture of a hairstyle and it comes out just like the image.

[Location & Parking]
The salon is located in Lafite plaza on the second floor. I have to be honest, this place was difficult to find. Although, you can plug it into your GPS (which I did), it was still difficult because you will drive by the entrance to parking lot without realizing out. Going in the eastbound direction, after you pass 9^th Ave. look towards the right until you see the store called, Indige design. Immediately, you will make a right turn into the hidden ramp (you will not be able to see this from the road until you pass it). Drive up the ramp, and you can park in one of the many stalls.
[Service]
As soon as I entered, I was greeted by Yosuke. He was very friendly and gave me a locker to put my valuables in. Once I was settled, we discussed what I’d like to be done to my hair. To be honest, I didn’t know what I wanted to do for my hair so I opted for just a general hair cut ($ 60)r. After that, he washed my hair and that scalp massage felt amazing! In total it took about 30 mins for the whole appointment.
Sometimes there was a bit of a language barrier because his primary language is Japanese but for the most part, he understood what I said (Really surprising how fast he learned English since he’s only been living here for about year).
[Overall]
I’ve been to their other location, Terra by Afloat but I live closer to this salon. I really liked how quick my appointment was and Yosuke did a great job with styling my hair. I will definitely be back again :)

I never write negative reviews and was so overwhelmed by this experience that it took me a while to do this review. After years of getting my hair cut by the owners of W Salon and Salon Blanc (and a few really great salons on the mainland), I decided it would be fun to try something new. I took the afternoon off, arranged for a sitter, and made an appointment. They called me a couple of hours before my appointment to try to get me to come in 2 hours later but I couldn’t do it so they agreed to see me at the original time I booked.
I was greeted with a «hello» by the assistant when I arrived. He then left with a girl that was in the waiting room. The stylist had someone in his chair so I sat and waited. 20 mins went by during which he came to the waiting room and glared at at me twice but didn’t say anything. 35 mins later, the assistant still had not returned, the stylist was still laughing and chatting with the client in his chair and completely ignoring me so I left. Clearly they overbooked which is human error and sometimes happens. I would have totally understood and rescheduled if given the chance but instead was rudely ignored.
I’m back to Alan at Salon Blanc who gives amazing haircuts, is super accommodating and attentive, and makes his clients feel valued.

This is a go to place for your hair. If you are looking for a honest and an attentive service. You definitely need to check this place out. They will give the best service.

I officially moved to Hawaii in 2012 and haven’t been able to find a hair stylist that I love… until now! I used to cut my hair once a year because I would wait until I took a trip back home to California to get it cut. I absolutely love my cut from Yosuke! Making an appointment was really easy. I called and he was able to fit me in the very next morning.
Parking was abundant which is a huge plus. You have to enter off of waialae and go up a ramp to the back.
The receptionist/​assistant (I didn’t get his name) was super cool. He speaks fluent english, but Japanese as well. I had to bring my toddler along with me, which i don’t recommend, and they were both very accommodating to her.
I had really long hair and went for a drastic, much shorter cut. I pretty much just gave basic directions to Yosuke in terms of length and layers, but I left it up to him to decide what he thought would look good. I have never in my life loved a short cut that I’ve gotten, but he did an AMAZING job! In fact, my friends told me I should never grow out my hair again because they loved it so much. My cut included a shampoo/​conditioning and it was blow dried and styled at the end.
I’m so excited to have found my new go-​to salon. All in all, I give this place a two thumbs up!

Just wanted to give Yosuke and Keiji another shout out bc they provide such great customer service. Had a digital perm and cut yesterday and I wasn’t feeling it when I got home. Then got all these weird looks at work like, oh you curled your hair… So I called them today and they fit me back in right away and worked on it til it was exactly what I had envisioned. I felt so bad bc I should spoken up yesterday but they were professional, apologetic (for no reason) and continue to have a loyal customer in me. My whole family goes here including the hub and mil.

This is my first time at this location and with Yosuke. I only have good things to say about him and his assistant (sorry I didn’t get his name).
PROFESSIONALISM:
I went there ready to spend $ 300 on Japanese straight perm. But after they looked at my hair and listened to why I want straight perm, they strongly recommend against my perm idea. They normally won’t recommend straight perm because how harsh the chemicals are which will damage the hair. Considering I am only annoyed by the baby hairs and fly aways, they gave me a few very good «to-​do» and «not to do» tips. LONG STORY SHORT, they will not try to pull in regular clients by damaging their hair (convicting them to color/​perm). Therefore, I have FULL RESPECT with their professional ethics. They may lose this $ 300 from straight perm today, but they have gained me as a sure to return customer, and probably many people whom I will spread the good words to.
SKILL-​WISE:
I normally don’t feel satisfied about my hair cut — picky me. But this time, I showed him a photo of hair style I wanted, and he made my hair JUST LIKE THAT PHOTO! I didn’t even ask him to fix anything as I normally would at other places. He is a magic maker!
If you want someone with solid skills and great ethics, please come to Yosuka!

Went to this salon for the first time. It’s clean, hip and a hidden gem in Kaimuki. Yosuke did an amazing job (he was patient, & friendly too even with my Japanese not being so great) — my hair looks great, and will be back again!

There is only one stylist at this location, Yosuke. Keiji is his assistant. Both are super cool. Yosuke is a really good stylist. Although his english is limited, I find stylist trained in Japan are really good and up to date with all the current trends. Keiji is a local boy but fluent in Japanese.
Even though i pay $ 60 for a hair cut, i find it grows out much better than having a buzz cut that grows out wacko in a few weeks. I can go about 6 weeks between cuts and its even still stylable at that point.
This place is hard to find as you can’t see it from the street. Its in the same building as WZ entertainment. Just take the ramp up prior to that building and Terra is located on the 2^nd floor parking area.

We’ve just moved to Hawaii last month, and I am happy to have found this hair salon. Not only Yosuke is talented but everyone working there is very friendly and polite. My haircut looks great and I like that they use organic hair-​dye. I am looking forward to getting more haircut from Yosuke.

Ok– posting review number 2 here… My first trip to this salon had a few technical hiccups. But the cleanliness, attractive aesthetics, and great company of the stylist places my rating at a 3. After my hair hiccup (lack of enough toner after a blonde dye job) the stylist, yosuke kobayashi, offered to fix it free so I returned. He not only perfectly corrected the color, but gave me an amazing cut and conditioning hair treatment free of charge as well (oh, and I fully fell asleep during the massage he gave me at the sink. Magical!) he was so kind and apologetic that I had to come in to have my hair corrected he stubbornly tried to turn away my tip for his super job well done. this is absolutely my staple salon. I have been here 4 times total now. I’ve recently referred my dad here, he loved his cut and even more so the chance to practice his Japanese with yosuke and keiji. Today I went in for a root touch up and weave in extensions. I’ve had the tape in method twice and that was a disaster– clip in is too time consuming– I’m by far happiest with the extensions he has done on me. Mind you, I’m a white girl with (bleached) blonde hair– I think this is important info because before I was a customer here I was concerned that the stylist here may not be familiar with how to work on my hair texture, etc. I thought wrong. Pricing is impressively modest as well.

This is actually a Terra by Afloat — Waialae location with the same modern concept and amenities as the Pensacola Street salon.
Parking is easier and the place is nice and new. (located near JJ’s Bakery)
The location is so convenient on the second floor up the ramp.
The cut and style precision by Yosuke is excellent and it was easy to get an appointment at this location compared to the Pensacola location.
I will be back again.

Yosuke is a great hairstylist. He fixed my uneven hair including side bangs perfectly.
I enjoyed the first few haircuts but he’s not consistent & focused the last couple times so I’m trying another hairstylist closer to home.
Salon ambiance and style is modern, refreshing and very clean. Price is competitive with free private parking too.

This is my first time here as I wanted to try out the digital perm. There’s only a few salons that does it here, but I opted for terra by afloat since they had good ratings and it was near my house.
They have ample parking and the store is small cut very contemporary and clean. I was greeted by a male (I didn’t get his name), and soon after met with yosuke. He asked what I wanted done, and I requested the digi perm, cut, style. I had no idea what type of digital perm I wanted, so he showed me a magazine. Honestly, I trusted him to do what he thought was best.
Anyway. I love my new perm! It’s so soft and wavy! Now trying to maintain it might be a different challenge! But I hope it works out!

been to many different japanese hair salons in Hawaii. I have very thick coarse hair which needs a special type of cut and style. been to the Pensacola location and was discouraged immediately after my second visit as I felt like they had pushed unecessary treatments on me. long story short, I decided to give this new location a try since it was closeby.
apppointment was easily booked, parking was convenient, salon was clean and modern, staff was very friendly!
yoosuke-​san was very straight forward and only looked out for the best in my interest. gave me various options and was very informative despite my «rules.»
immediately fixed my hair and didn’t push for anything other than the haircut I came in for.
excellent job! so thrilled they’re in my neighborhood! can’t wait to go back! thank you!

I’ve had cuts + digital perms a few times now, but this was my first time at Terra’s new location on Waialae and it has been my best digital perm by far. The salon is bright and clean, and the salon director, Yosuke did an amazing job. I also appreciate his honesty, as I wanted a shorter cut, but he advised me that because my hair is so thick, it would look better with a longer length. He turned out to be right! His assistant was really nice too and the scalp massage with the shampooing was so relaxing. I’m really pleased with my hair.
It’s a great time to go, too, since they just opened about a month ago; a hidden gem that won’t stay hidden for long.

Finding the location on Waialae avenue was a little tricky since there are no signs up yet: there’s a small ramp on the street that leads up to a small parking lot with the salon on the far right side. The salon seems very new, and it’s very bright. The stylists were very friendly, and they accomodated my requests. Plus they speak fluent Japanese, which helps me out a lot. The shampoo took a little long but was very thorough. I liked the shampoo that they selected for me, and I was very satisfied with my haircut!

It’ll be great for me and you had you updated your website to reflect a change in location or a new location as I called multiple times after your opening hours to schedule an appointment. Sadly, you lost me as a client.
