Shopping at Take’s is a challenge, everything is good, so which do you choose. Some o-toro, some fresh hamachi, a chirashi? Get there early.

Thanks to Nat N’s recommendation, Santi and I came to visit this Japanese fish market in the late afternoon for some fresh seafood. This small fish market is located in the former 99 Ranch Market, and sells fresh fish as well as ready-to-eat items such as Poke, Chirashi, Sashimi, Negitoro, Shredded Crab Bowl, and Musubi. Most of their items were already sold out by the afternoon. We were fortunate to order the Spicy Negitoro Don($ 7.95) and Salmon Musubi($ 1.50). The soft, ultra fresh Negitoro was made to order, and carried a balance of spicy and fresh tuna flavors. The tamagoyaki was fluffy and nicely rolled, and the cucumber slices added crunch to the Negitoro. The fish was not overly dressed or creamy, so each bite was accentuated by soft, fluffy, and buttery melt-in-your mouth textures. The Salmon Musubi came with great rice texture loaded with fresh salmon to the core. It was a five star seafood meal for under $ 10. Service was kind, unassuming, and friendly. Seating was also plentiful in the food court. At times they would have fresh uni and other noteworthy items. I wished I could come here all the time. I would love to return to try their Shredded Crab Bowl, Poke, and just about everything else they have on hand that day. Interested diners should go early. You’ll be in seafood heaven!

Fresh fish and friendly service by an elderly couple. I’ve been here many times but today I got to try the food. Usually when I go they are sold out. I can see why they sell out. All I can say is go early.

Very fresh fish. Well made and seasoned rice. Cuts of fish were pretty thin. Talking less than half a cm thin.

Aloha market with lots of options. The fish is very fresh, the service is excellent and no frills. I can’t say much of the ambience of the market, but a great place to get sushi grade fish caught locally.

The fish is super fresh the prices for what you get seem pretty reasonable. I wish you could do more made to order stuff so you could get your ideal combo but their selections are solid already.

For the price, you can’t beat how good these bowls are. The spicy negitoro bowl is as good as it gets. Don’t wait too late, might run out

Time flies so fast when you’re on vacation… Sighh… I did not want my trip to end so I was looking for one more round of poke/sashimi to take with as lunch for our trip back to San Fran. Luckily, the hunny had to get some gas before returning the rental car, so I searched around thru Unilocal and stumbled upon this awesome FIND. It is inside a warehouse/market place that sells local and authentic Japanese food to go. Ahhhh there it is … TAKE… Look for the fresh fish section on your right as you enter the bldg. We ran to the counter and looked for what is still available and luckily, this friendly, old Japanese guy came from the back with another bowl of fresh chirashi. YUMMMM… We are set for the plane. No need to get stuck with airplane food. We also grabbed a plate of tuna and salmon sashimi. They all looked super fresh and tasty. For two chirashi bowls($ 9.50 each) plus sashimi, our total came out to $ 34. It was a really goof deal. On the plane, everyone was jealous of our packed lunch. The fish was super fresh and delish!!! Too bad they were out of poke… This place is clean and legit! Stop by before going to the airport. So worth it!!!

Just had 2 slices of heavenly tuna, from Take-San’s shop, it was flown fresh from Honolulu to Seattle. Delicious, you can’t eat any tuna after you’ve had a Take-San’s tuna. He’s for the best in all the land.

Tucked away in the old 99 Ranch Building(where the seafood used to be) is Take’s Fish Market. I had no idea that 99 Ranch has transformed into a full-fledged food court. Most of the restaurants that were there in the beginning still are with the addition of a few newcomers. The entire place was pretty packed when I went on a random weekday afternoon. Anywho, Take’s. I actually came twice, only a few days apart. The first time I went and grabbed a chirashi bowl because they were out of negitoro :(The bowl was pretty tasty though. Good cuts of fish and it was only ~$ 11 for maybe about 8 or 9 slices total of different fish. The second time I came back, I made sure to call ahead and ‘reserve’ a spciy negitoro bowl(tip from the owner himself) since many of the workers do the same. I’m pretty glad I came back and tried it. It was a great deal for only $ 8! Great value and convenient location(for me) with lots of parking. Definitely my go-to spot for fish/spicy ahi in this neck of the woods!

Freshest sashimi around! Take really knows how to handle and choose his fish. Everytime I come to ranch 99 I make a stop to grab some sashimi. The cuts are so good and melt in your mouth. Atmosphere: hole in the wall in ranch 99. Right next to Mary’s Mediterranean kitchen. Service: very friendly owner and accepts credit cards. Intangibles: make sure you try the sashimi here!

Oh myyy… Uh, no, not George Takei(Sulu to you Trekkies) but Mr. Takei of Take’s Fish Market. The other day, we were trying to decide where to have lunch in the nearby neighborhood of Moanalua/Mapunapuna. We decided on Take’s Fish Market which we have passed many times while on our way to our favorite Mediterranean restaurant, Mary’s, in the former Ranch 99 Market. This is a mom and pop fish market that not only prepares sashimi and sushi plates or bowls to order but also takes catering platter orders for fresh-caught fish. Mr. Takei is a soft-spoken and friendly man and his wife is a quiet petite Japanese woman. When we stopped by, there weren’t any prepared plates or bowls in the refrigerated cases so I inquired with Mr. Takei if they were still open for business. He responded positively and mentioned that his wife was assembling fresh sashimi plates in back to put out into the cases. I, then, asked if I could order a couple of chirashi bowls that I had seen on his menu. He went to his kitchen area, where I could see him and his wife assembling fresh bowls for me. Within a few minutes, he returned with glorious bowls of sliced fish atop fresh sushi rice. He asked if I wanted the bowls for takeout or eat-in. There were a lot of seats and tables available so we chose to eat-in. The fish was so fresh, tender and clean-smelling. As we dipped a bit of wasabi and soy sauce onto the slices of fish, we were careful to just lightly smear the soy sauce to not detract from the fresh flavors. We were impressed with the portion, freshness and value($ 10.50 + tax). This local business has been in this complex for several years yet this was the first time that we have ever tried them. We don’t know what took us so long to try Take’s Fish Market… but, we’ll be back! #354

The owners here are very nice and they promptly come to the front when they see customers. I came here on 3 different occasions and tried different things before deciding to make a review. Salmon and maguro sashimi($ 9.50) The fish tasted fresh and I especially like the salmon. There was different cuts of maguro, akami, which is the lean type of meat and chutoro, which has more fat in the meat. For the freshness and amount of fish you get, it’s a good deal. Spicy negitoro don($ 7.95) Wow this is pretty cheap for a donburi! The fish was fresh and didn’t have a fishy flavor. Although there’s nothing wrong with the donburi, due to my personal taste, I wouldn’t buy it again because I’d like it to have more sauce, spiciness, and tobbiko. Kani sushi($ 9.95) On the picture menu this is listed as kani sushi, but I call it kani don because it’s real crab meat over sushi rice. Had this on 2 different occasions and the first one I ate, I thought the shredded crab was mixed with a tiny bit of mayo. On the 2nd occasion, it didn’t taste like it had mayo in it. Oh well, either way I liked it both times. I wish there was more meat in the don and the amount was consistent! The amount of meat in the don that I bought was inconsistent. If you check the pics uploaded, you’ll see some people had more meat and some people had less. I’m very petite and I feel like I’d need to eat 2 of these to get full. But I’d buy this again because I love crab.

After getting off the plane at HNL, I was looking for lunch nearby. I headed down the road to Moanalua 99 for some ono kine grindz. For those unaware with Moanalua 99, it is the former 99 Ranch Market building in Mapunapuna. Although 99 Ranch closed down, this spot has remained viable due to the many eateries housed there. I had a hard time finding Take’s Fish Market initially. Couldn’t locate this place among the eateries there. I finally found this shop near the entrance to the old 99 Ranch. It is right next to a produce stand. This is not your traditional fish market. Instead, you will find a nice selection of sashimi blocks and fish bowls here ready to take home. I wanted to get a tuna or chirashi bowl, but at mid-day on a Saturday the selection was limited to just the chirashi. I got the chirashi bowl($ 10.50) to go. For the price, the chirashi bowl is a good deal. It has a little of everything. Fish, shrimp, crab and egg. The quality of the fish is good quality. If you are looking for a morning or lunch meal nearby before or after flying into HNL, check out Take’s Fish Market for their fish and chirashi bowls. It is better than anything you would find at the airport.

Bought some sashimi here for my my husband the other day. He is really picky about his sashimi… the fish I bought was called chu toro, btt looked like otoro. the owner said they don’t catch otoro locally and this was caught locally. Fish was fresh, people really nice. I told the man that I wouldn’t be going straight home and he carefully wrapped the fish in a bag with an ice pack… really Japan style! Love it… and I will be back… oh my husband said the fish was really good!

The Fish is still nice quality but the Chirashi Bowl wasn’t that great. The fish was cut thin and I’ve had much better for $ 10.95 at Aloha Cones and especially Maguro Bros. Service is very friendly and I’ll return for Sashimi or Uni.

After buying gifts from the annual Winter Craft Fair at Moanalua High School, we were ravenous and ready for some yummy lunch! Upon checking what was good nearby, Take’s Fish Market popped up. The rave reviews and promising photos by fellow Unilocalers got me hyped up about this place and I was not let down! I ordered the spicy negitoro bowl and I am salivating right now just remembering how good it was. The fish was so fresh and soft, the level of spice so spot-on, and the sushi rice so perfectly seasoned. I savored every bite and though the bowl left me full, I would have gladly paid for another one(only $ 7.95…such a steal for the high quality) and eaten it within the next hour. The elderly Japanese owner had such a kind and gentle manner to him, which made me happy to give him business. On another note, I had no idea the old 99 Ranch had turned into a food court area. I was definitely tempted to get something else in addition to my spicy negitoro bowl haha. I ended up just getting a milk tea with mochi balls from Bee’s Dessert House for dessert. It was a great day to be a foodie!

Thanks Ryan T. for giving me the heads up about this place! I saw his pic of Take’s negitoro bowl on Instagram and headed straight for this place the next day. Picked up two bowls, one for me, one for the hubby and WOW, we were both in negitoro heaven. The negitoro is so soft and just melts in your mouth. The price($ 7.95) is reasonable, given the market price for ahi these days. The negitoro bowls are made to order, which means you have to wait for them to make it, but I’ll take that over buying it pre-made in the display.

Take’s Fish Market is da bomb! You know it’s good if the place sells out of spicy negitoro bowls 30 minutes after it opens. Yes it does happen. I don’t know if that’s an every day thing, but there have been times I’ve gone down only to be turned away without my spicy negitoro. Luckily I have learned to love sashimi so I’ve ordered the chirashi bowl as well. The rice is always seasoned well and the negitoro is awesome :) The couple who run the place are extremely sweet and soft-spoken. I’ve only seen the two of them working so at times, you may have to wait. Is it worth the wait? Of course! Each bowl is prepared as you order it from what I’ve seen and the attention to detail is something you don’t see all the time. You can tell they care about their products. sashimi platters are delicious and always fresh. I don’t want my spicy negitoro bowls to always sell out, but I gotta give props to an amazing place.
