Dang! I passed by to buy lunch at Six Dollar house, and they are CLOSED! They have a sign stating that because of the lease, they had to close, effective Feb 24, 2011. I am really sad because the fish and other plates at this restaurant were so cheap AND very tasty. At least I got to eat here a few times before they closed. Maybe they’ll open again after they get a new lease, but don’t know if I should hold my breath. I wonder if they will open at another location in town.

MARCH2011UPDATE: This eatery is now closed. The sign on the door doesn’t indicate where they may have moved. There’s a lot of food in their plate lunch for just $ 6, tax included. They don’t charge extra for brown rice which is a nice surprise. Each day there are two $ 5 specials, which is a bargain in Downtown. And if you’re early enough, they even have bentos for $ 4. Insane! My coworkers and I go there at least once a week. I really don’t have anything bad to say about any of their dishes. The one gripe I have is that they put the hot entrée on a bed of lettuce. By the time I get back to the office, the lettuce is wilted and brown. They really should think about using cabbage. However, that’s a minor problem. Pretty decent food at a very sensible price. What more can you ask for in a fast food joint?

So the first day I tried eating here I ordered their hamburger steak. The picture on their menu is of two hamburger patties, smothered gravy, over rice with a side of veg and mac salad… y’know typical local fare. I was very surprised when I recieved: two teriyaki-hamburger patties, kimchee, greens, a hot dog? rice, no gravy and they gave me chopsticks and a knife to eat it with. I really had to scratch my head at that. It was as if the chef in the back had multiple-personality-disorder and couldn’t decide if he wanted to make a korean dish or a local dish, so he made both in one plate, and threw a hotdog in just for kicks. I was perplexed, but still hungry so I ate it. Now normally this is where this review would end, and they would get 2 – 3 stars and I would probably find someplace else to eat lunch. But on a whim I went back a few weeks later and ordered their salmon. Truth be told I was half-expecting to get corned-beef and a popsicle with my meal, but it turned out to be just a pretty good salmon dish. Since then I’ve been back and have had their chicken katsu and their meat jun, both of which have been pretty good. So four stars for you, $ 6 House and your strange hamburger steak.

Six Dollars! cool! in the land of sub $ 8 plate lunches Six Dollars is a bargain. I saw this place which opened recently but haven’t had the chance to get here until now, well I walked in and stared at the menu trying to decide what to get and finally deciding on Garlic Chicken and it’s $ 6 tax included! and for the Month of August comes with a free drink! The Garlic Chicken although not the best in town was decent and nothing to grumble about my only complaint is that there is very little of the vegetables with the plate but then again for $ 6 that’s okay. You get a choice of White or Brown rice(I opted for the brown) which comes in it’s own container. I think that I will go back again as the selection is pretty good and I need to try some other selections. What is also cool is that you can create your own Combos and since I didn’t see a different price I guess it’s still $ 6. Parking of course being in Downtown Honolulu is limited to parking structures nearby or what ever public parking you can find. Best for us who work nearby who just walk. Yup I’ll be back.

Numerous choices of Korean/local style food. BBQ chicken, meat jun, mandoo, and spicy chicken to name a few. I chose the garlic chicken and it was perfect! Boneless, not overwhelmingly garlicy and a good amount of meat. Comes with 2 side portions of Korean style vegetables. Also comes with your choice of white or brown rice. $ 6.00 includes the tax. And, the menu says you can create your own combos!
