Is this the trend in Chinatown? Clean and well-kept businesses? For me, first was Maguro Brothers Hawaii, now it’s Number 1 Produce. After a very busy day with many things to do, I found myself in Chinatown looking to pick-up some potatoes that I was going to use for Saturday morning. I could go to Sam’s Club or Costco but just wanted to buy enough for a meal or two, not potatoes for the whole month! I went to my go to produce stores in Chinatown shortly after 430pm only to find ALL of them closed or in the process of closing. Several of the merchants noticed my face but didn’t bother to ask what I needed so I left their stores dejected. So, when walking on Hotel Street Mauka side, I came across Number 1 Produce as they caught my eye. What a bright store with their lighting and not to mention, it’s sooooooo clean! I immediately saw their potatoes and noticed the pricing CHEAPER than my go to places. They were very large and seemed in very good condition so I walked in to take a better look. Indeed they were of good quality so I picked up 5 large potatoes. While paying I looked around to find a large variety of vegetables and fruits with some fresh tofu, packaged and dried goods and even some instant Korean ramen! When speaking with the clerk I was advised this place has been open since last September so they’ve been there for about a year now. Although the address shows«Maunakea Street» the store entrance is actually on N Hotel Street, just a few doors down from the N Hotel Street entrance to Maunakea Marketplace(Mauka, or mountain side). Store hours are Mon to Fri from 6am to 5pm and closed on Sundays. If you’re in Chinatown and looking to shop in a very clean store, this place is for you.
