Acupuncture therapy is commonly used to treat neck pain, frozen shoulder, low back pain, sciatica, knee pain, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, carpal tunnel, and plantar fasciitis. The top commonly treated conditions at our center also include anxiety, Bell’s palsy, chemotherapy-​induced nausea, digestive issues, dysmenorrhea, fertility, headaches, insomnia, migraines, stress, and weight management. Nutritional counseling is also available to help patients with weight management issues. We accept most health insurance policies: HMAA, UHA, ASH, United Healthcare, Auto Accidents, Workman’s Compensation and Veteran Affairs.

Established in 2009.

I established my practice in Bethesda, Maryland and moved to the island of O’ahu in late 2012. My goal as a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner is to raise awareness in the community about the importance of health prevention and maintenance. I believe the best investment you can make is in your health.

Mei Lin is a licensed Acupuncturist in the State of Hawai’i. She offers free lectures on acupuncture and health prevention in the community and at small business wellness programs. She participates as a medical staff at the Pacific Rehabilitation Hospital. She completed a four year program at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM) and received her Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine (MSTCM). She is certified by the National Certification Commission in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) in Oriental Medicine (Diplomate in Oriental Medicine, Dipl. OM) including Acupuncture, Chinese Herbology, Biomedicine, and Foundations of Oriental Medicine. She is fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese.

Having been in a car accident that left me with severe headaches, I sought out a more holistic approach to treatment, one that my no-​fault insurance would cover. Enter Maunakea Acupuncture Clinic. Mei Lin and her staff are very accommodating and kind. I was able to schedule my appointment online and was seen quickly.
Every time I go, its a fantastic experience. The rooms are comfortable and Mei Lin sets you at ease with the whole process. She utilizes heat with the acupuncture for a really relaxing experience. Recently, I’ve noticed an improvement in my symptoms and last couple of times I treated with her, I actually zonked out and slept almost the entire session. You leave the clinic with a nice hot cup of tea to further relax you and uplift your spirits.

I highly recommend this wellness center located in the Kuakini Medical Plaza in Nuuanu, Honolulu. Mei Lin, who runs the center, is highly trained in both western medicine and Chinese traditional medicine. Together with her staff, Katrina, they make you feel comfortable with treating you with needles in acupuncture and other methods. Mei Lin fully explains her approach to the relationship between mind and body that makes sense for those unfamiliar with this kind of treatment. I’ve had serious health issues and while searching on internet, came upon the home page of her center. Improvement in my health since I started going to the center since last fall has been remarkable. Interestingly, my medical team of primary care doctor, neuro science doctor and psychiatrist all approve of including acupuncture in my treatment. In addition to the treatment itself, each session in a quiet darkened room, with gentle music, and delicious hot tea after a session all brings peaceful and restful time. Thank you Mei Lin for helping me restore the harmony in my life.

I can’t explain just how transformative and healing my visits with Dr. Mei Lin are, she’s incredible! I’ve been her patient for the past year, and I don’t know how I would have gotten through it without her and staff. Upon my first visit, I immediately knew that I found a special place where I felt that my concerns were being heard. I have had chronic back pain for a number of years, and I feel much more balanced and experience tremendous relief from my treatments. Dr. Mei Lin has also treated me with fire cupping and aromatherapy which is such a nourishing treatment! If you haven’t tried acupuncture and you’re looking for a doctor who cares, and is curious about your body, and its’ needs then you’ve got to try Maunakea Wellness Center!

All of the reviews list this establishment exactly how it is. I have received acupuncture treatments over the years in different states and locally and Dr Maunakea is one the best. The entire staff makes you feel welcomed and is very knowledgeable.
The calmness you receive in treatment continues as you sit with your cup of tea listening to the soothing music and listening to the water fountain.
More importantly the acupuncture service is to your specific area needed. The initial treatment begins with consultation that is not rushed. Truly feeling like you are important and there are no other patients. This same service continues each time you come.
Highly recommend Dr Maunakea and any service treatment that she recommends.

I’ve been seeing Mei Lin for almost a year now for acupuncture. Originally it was for congestion issues, which the acupuncture did help to relieve. I go in every month for health maintenance. Maunakea Acupuncture & Wellness Center is the best! I have been having problems with my back for years. I’ve had physical therapy, traction, surgery, nerve blocks, and the list doesn’t stop. Bottom line is, Mei Lin runs a very relaxing, customer driven, customer satisfaction and make-​you-​feel-​comfortable type of business. Having pinched nerve problems and found Maunakea Acupunture & Wellness Center on Unilocal (of course) with a lot of favorable reviews.
Made an appointment online (which is such a step forward in this day & age).
Mei-​Lin went through my medical history/​symptoms and started our treatment program.
As of today, I have had four (4) acupunture treatments and one (1) cupping treatment which has made my pain/​movements more manageable.
Mei-​Lin is (as reviewed) so very caring, knowledgeable, and professional (and she’s cute too)!
She runs her business very well as noticeable in the clean office and staff at the front desk.
Attention to detail is evident as the rooms are set up to be relaxing via aromatherapy and soothing music. Tea at the end of the appointments are a nice touch and just simply GREAT!
Mei-​Lin gives you a thorough consultation and every session gets better and better. She gives you a «comfort button» in case the heating lamps get too hot or if you’re not comfortable once she has left the room. The room is darkened before leaving and of course, the pillows have to be just right before her exit.
I usually make my appointments early in the morning as I’m starting my day, but I probably still have the best «nap» in her office (even though I’ve just woken up after a good nights sleep!). As she explains, its the effects of the acupuncture and endorphins in the body which allow such a state of peace.
I have become a true believer of TCM and look forward to future appointments with Mei-​Lin.

I love love love Mei Lin. She is incredibly smart, good at what she does, listens carefully to the client, and best of all she gets your body results. Half the time when she comes back into the room, I’m sleeping which is amazing.
Her treatments are helping my back and neck pain and many other things as a positive side effect including my cycle and headaches.
I love her aromatherapy add on and the delightful hot tea at the end of her treatment. Mei Lin is also really humble and pretty. She has an amazing dress collection. I like to joke that she is like a princess… like how Princess Diana never wore the same dress twice. I seriously have yet to see her wear the same dress twice. She looks amazing in them. And even better she is professional, smart, and effective too. The total package.
Cannot recommend highly enough. Go see Mei Lin!

I have chronic migraines & have been wanting to try alternative therapies instead of relying so much on Rx meds.
Mei-​Lin was exceptional. She was very thorough and attentive during my consultation. I started acupuncture treatment today and was quite pleased. The needles didn’t really hurt and it was a very relaxing experience. I also love that Mei-​Lin uses DoTerra oils as part of the soothing experience. The 30 minutes seemed to fly by. I’m looking forward to continuing my therapy and being completely migraine free!
If you’re looking for natural and alternative treatments, definitely give Maunakea Wellness a try! You’ll be happy that you did.

If you are skeptical of acupuncture, don’t be, you are in great hands! This was my first «real» acupuncture treatment. I went in for sciatica. After speaking with Mei-​Lin in detail during my consultation, it was recommended to start treatment twice a week for 4 weeks. I started that same day, boy I was excited to rid myself the pain of sciatica.
Mei-​Lin is sweet, caring and gives you her undivided attention. She explains everything in great detail so you understand. The office is clean clean clean!!! iPods in each room provide a calming ambiance playing very soothing spa like music. Heated beds keep you nice and comfortable (but not hot) in the room, temperature is perfect!
Mei-​Lin is very gentle and you barely feel the needles going in. She always asks how you are doing and if there were any changes between treatments. She inserts the needles, hands you your «emergency call button», turns off the overhead light and shuts the door. After falling asleep and sometimes waking myself up with my own snoring, she is back and you are all done.
Parking garage is easy to find, parking spaces are nice size and plentiful, and you get parking validation in the office, $ 2 for up to 3 hours.
Easy online booking of appointments on their website, confirmations sent via email or text or both. I made every appointment online and never had a problem, this was very convenient.
Loved the hot tea you get after every treatment — nice touch!
My sciatica pain is much better, it did take a while to reach a bearable point but I would definitely come back again. Mei-​Lin worked very hard for me and did all she could to remove the pain and get me back to normal.

I never tired acupuncture before going to Mei Lin so I wasn’t sure what the benefits were going to be. She was extremely thorough in identifying ailments that I was experiencing and prioritizing what were the most pressing issues. Although I should see her more as a preventative measure I usually end up seeing her after the fact when my aches become chronic. I’ve had lower back and sleeping problems and the times when I have gone in to see her she is able to address my problems efficiently. Whether or not you are skeptical about acupuncture I would highly recommend at least sitting down with Mei Lin to get a better understanding of how your body operators and what you can do to maintain a breathy lifestyle.

Every now and then I throw out my back and if you didn’t know – it hurts pretty bad. I recently walked in with so much pain that it was hard to sit comfortably and even lay down. If I hadn’t gone to Mei-​Lin my pain would have been so much worse and I would have been much stiffer. I appreciated that the office was clean (but didn’t have that sterile hospital smell or feel), the music was soothing (I even fell asleep during some of the treatments), and the hot tea at the end of the session was delicious. I went back for more treatments and I could definitely feel the difference afterwards. Also loved the convenience of the online booking and having the appointment automatically going to my calendar on my phone! I was even able to book same day appointments.

Mei-​Lin is professional, caring and genuinely interested in the health and wellness of her patients. Her clinic is clean, comfortable and has the bonus of a beautiful view. She took time to explain the process and theories behind acupuncture and even sent a follow up email to check how the patient felt.

I’ve only had two sessions with Mei-​Lin. This is my first time trying acupuncture. I have many overuse injuries: Carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, and planters fasciitis. I read that it takes up to five sessions to experience the benefits of acupuncture so I decided to give it at least that many to make my decision. As of right now, after two sessions, my carpal tunnel is almost non-​existent, and my other problems are slightly better. I’m still having tennis elbow issues and planters fasciitis, but I’m hopeful. I do paddle and hike quite a bit so I did not expect a quick fix. I’m looking forward to my next visit. The environment here is relaxing and I nap for a good 30 min while the needles are doing their magic. Mei-​Lin is very friendly and informative and the tea is tasty and a pleasant end to the session.

I’m so glad I found Mei Lin. She is an excellent TCM practitioner and acupuncturist.
As someone who has been treated by several different (good and bad) acupuncturists, I can confidently say that Mei Lin is one of the best. She really cares about you and tries to approach your symptoms/​health issue from the bigger picture to treat the root cause and not the symptoms. Unlike other acupuncturists I have seen, she never pushes herbs/​Chinese medicine or other expenses on me.
I saw her to treat some hand and arm pain, which has since disappeared. She explains her treatment approach and patiently answers my incessant questions about which points she is using and why. After she inserts the needles, she turns down the lights, turns up relaxing music, and gives me a buzzer to call her if anything feels wrong while she leaves the room. When the treatment is over, she sends me on my merry way with a nice cup of tea. She also follows up with me via email to make sure I am doing ok. Her email accessibility and online scheduling are huge pluses, and something that is rare for Hawaii practitioners/​doctors (I took this completely for granted when I lived in San Francisco).
Other big pluses are an immaculately clean office, online scheduling, accessible via email, validated parking, and she accepts several different kinds of insurance.

My husband was told he had a pinched nerve in his neck. His pain level was between 8 & 10. The pain was so severe he was nauseated and could not sleep and his right arm was numb and painful. I had to feed him as his right arm was numb & painful. I had him in the ER, 2 times and he was given a lot of meds, but nothing else. Even though he had the meds his pain was not going away. He was unable to sleep on his back or even lying down. He had to sleep upright!!! He could not drive the car. His right arm was so number & nerve pain sore it was useless to him. Up until this my husband was an active man, and this was scary to see him so laid up and helpless.
I knew of acupuncture and knew of a few people who had good results from it. Neither of us had ever tried it before this. I was open minded to using Chinese medicine since it has been around for over 3 thousand years.
I started researching it online and reading about it, and then I noticed an announcement in the local «Midweek» newspaper for a talk on acupuncture with Mei-​Lin, and I said to my husband let’s go! Even though we researched it online, we learned a lot about it from Mei-​Lin. We made an appointment and it has helped so much –it was amazing. Acupuncture reduced the pain so much and he was able to sleep lying down. After more treatments he could sleep on his right side which was his bad side, and it was like a night & day difference! It has been improving with extra treatments. So if you have pain, do not wait, get to Mei-​Lin office and try it — acupuncture works!
