I love this park and it’s sad to see that its treated like an unwanted step child of the state of Hawaii. Kalihi is such a densely populated area of Honolulu, with so many working class families, and this park provides free physical activity which is so important to these children. I’m born and raised in Kalihi and after 30 years, its difficult to see decades pass and many other districts get funding for park improvement, over this one. This park is used by everyone for everything. From Rugby practice and games, to USTA junior tennis tournaments, baseball practice, intramural volleyball, and middle school football clinics. Just about every sport is played here. Families BBQ it up here as well and its very heartwarming to see them share their food, with the one or two homeless people that pass by. My dogs enjoy this park 2 – 3 times a day for walks, and hope the city gets it together to get more funding for this site. Be careful if crossing the field from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, the sprinklers go off, in 1.2 second bursts for inconsistent period of times, daily. Either the city is saving on water or it needs to be fixed! This park needs a facelift but until that time it’s still a great outdoor place to be.
